Double Agent (20 page)

Dear Reader,

Thank you for going on this journey with Doug and Sabine, my first book for the Love Inspired Suspense line. I hope it was as fun to read as it was for me to write!

In
Double Agent,
Doug and Sabine are both confined by the chains of their pasts, until they surrender their lives to the Lord. The shame and guilt we suffer because of the things we’ve done, or the decisions we’ve made, can stay with us. But God is truly the only one who can bring freedom in our lives. His love can break those chains.

Questions for Discussion

  1. Doug and Sabine both want to find Ben’s killer, so they team up. Why do you think Doug agreed to this? What would you have done?
  2. What do you think made Sabine want to be a spy? Do you think it would be an exciting job or a scary one? Why?
  3. Both Doug and Sabine discover things about each other they never knew. Do you know people who have a different persona they adopt in different situations? How do you feel about this?
  4. Do you think part of Sabine’s “spy” persona had to do with self-preservation? Have you ever done something similar? Why?
  5. Doug and Sabine make up a mixed-race couple. How do you feel about love that crosses the boundaries of race and culture?
  6. Both Doug and Sabine have the kind of job where only those closest to them know. Have you ever had a secret? What happened?
  7. Sabine admits her brother reacted badly when he found out she was a spy. Have you had good or bad reactions to your secrets? Why do you think that is?
  8. Doug assumes—incorrectly—that Sabine uses her feminine wiles to charm her targets. Has anyone ever drawn a wrong conclusion about you? Why? How did it make you feel?
  9. Doug and his father have a complex relationship, to where he feels he can’t even tell him he misses him. Why do you think this is?
  10. Doug feels as if his mother was the one who brought him and his father together. Is there someone in your life or your family who holds people together? Why do you think this is?
  11. The middle-aged housekeeper, Jean, clearly feels protective of Doug’s father, and the general has kept her in his employ for years. Do you feel they could have a romantic relationship? What do you think it would take for them to fall in love, or even admit how they feel?
  12. Sabine wakes up at her house to find Doug has both gone grocery shopping and made breakfast. How do you feel about a man who will take care of a woman this way?
  13. Sabine believes she’s not worthy of a relationship where she is loved and treasured. Have you ever felt like this? Why? What, if anything, made you change your mind?
  14. Sabine keeps from Doug the fact her handler is the same man he knew, a major general, not wanting to sully his reputation now that he is dead. Do you agree with her wanting to protect Doug’s memories? Or do you think the truth should always come out?
  15. After finding out her handler’s identity, Sabine intends to go and resolve the situation herself—without the team’s help. Do you think she could have done this? Have you ever taken something on like this? Why?
