Chapter 4

“What in the world?” Katlyn begin to step from the clearing but was stopped by Micah’s hand at her waist. Noticing the police car in her drive she paused. What was Officer Carver doing here?

“Wait.” Micah watched the officer exit the cabin ahead of them. He had been inside probably searching. Now the officer was moving quickly across the gravel driveway carrying a brown paper bag. What could he have found?

“Wait for what Micah? That man was in my house!” Katlyn was mad; really mad. How dare he come into her home when she wasn’t there? He did not have the right to search through her things. There were laws against it for a reason!

“Wait for him to leave; he has found something or he would not be moving the way he is.” Micah watched as the officer climb into his vehicle and quickly backed out of the drive.

Katlyn looked up at Micah in horror, “The suit. He had to of found the suit.” As soon as he was out of sight she bolted for the house hoping beyond hope that she was wrong. If she wasn’t they could be in a very deep mess.

Micah was right behind her as she ran into the bedroom and flung open the cedar chest; it was gone. He had found the suit and taken it with him. If he had it analyzed he would find out that it was not made with materials here on Earth. This posed a very big problem. It meant that Katlyn was no longer safe here. It meant that the officer would be coming back and probably not alone. It meant that Katlyn and he had some talking to do and some choices to make and they were going to have to do this pretty quickly.

“Micah. What are we going to do?” Katlyn whispered as she slowly sat on the edge of the bed. There had to be a way out of this mess. They were in deep trouble or at least they soon would be.

“I am guessing that with the ship showing up on the news that Officer Carver will only need to make a phone call to have the suit analyzed, am I correct?” Micah watched her nod and he knelt in front of her with his hands on her thighs. “So, now we choose.”

Katlyn looked up at him and grasped his hand; “Choose?”

“We can stay and run, or we can leave.” Micah rubbed her hand softly, “This was not how I wished to have this conversation but I would like for you to come with me. I would like for you to share a life with me. I know it is too soon, I know that you do not really know me, but I am hoping that you will give me a chance.”

“Come with you?” Katlyn took a breath; it wasn’t like she hadn’t thought of it. She had, last night before sleep. But to leave this world to go to another without knowing what was there. Without knowing what was in store for her. In all honesty she didn’t have any family; she was in fact alone here. It wasn’t as if she would be overly missed.

“What happens if we do this and once back on your world you no longer wish to be with me? What if I choose to not be with you?
What if things between us change? What happens then?”

“That will not happen. You have felt it, the connection we have together, you are my soul mate and I yours.” It was crazy but Micah wanted her to agree, he needed her to agree. He would not be able to leave without her.

Katlyn looked into his eyes and felt the hunger that was consuming him; the need to have her with him and the stubborn refusal to leave without her. “Micah, if we stay here they will come after you. You would never be safe.”

“I know.” Rubbing the top of her hand Micah looked into her eyes, “But I cannot leave without you by my side. If you choose to stay I will stay with you; if you choose to come with me we will leave now. Katlyn, trust me, trust
in
me. Put yourself in my hands, I will not let you down.”

Katlyn closed her eyes and basing everything on what she felt when she looked into his eyes, she took the leap of faith. “What do I need to take?” She gasped at the overwhelming relief that spread through her body from him and smiled.

Micah pulled her to him and kissed her deeply, “You will never be sorry.”

Micah stood and pulled her up with him; it was time to move. It would not be long before Officer Caver came back with reinforcements.

“Give me two minutes.” Katlyn moved quickly out of his room and into hers. Score one for procrastination, she had never unpacked. All of her clean clothing were still in the bag. Quickly, she pulled on a pair of jeans, some sturdy hiking boots and a t-shirt.

“Micah?” Katlyn pulled her bag behind her as she moved out into the hallway.

“Ready?” Micah grabbed the bag and threw it over his shoulder heading for the door. They needed to get out of here, now. His was sure Officer Carver would be here any minute and he wouldn’t be alone.

“Yes, let’s get out of here.” Katlyn moved quickly behind Micah and headed out the door and toward the SUV in the driveway. Micah’s feeling of urgency was growing; she could feel it crowding her, pushing her to almost run to the car. “Where am I going Micah?”

Micah looked at the watch on his wrist, “Go to the end of your drive and turn left away from town, then four miles and stop.” He threw her bag in the floorboard, jumped in the seat and closed the door.

Katlyn did as he instructed and hit the gas at the main road trying to put as much space between them and the cabin as possible. There was no telling how soon Officer Carver would come back but like Micah, she was betting that it would be minutes and that he wouldn’t be alone. They had a very short space of time to get away and they needed to use it to their advantage.

As she got about a mile down the road Micah began pressing buttons on his watch.
A series of beeps emitted from it as he watching the screen intently, she narrowed her gaze and smiled slightly, “I am assuming that is not the watch I thought it was.” Why she had assumed it was a watch was beyond her.

Micah looked up quickly then back down, “No, it is a communicator. I need to warn the others.” He typed frantically letting the other five know what had happened and putting them on the alert.
If they were not well hidden they could very well be hunted next, the newscast had shown all six pods coming down. The hunters knew that there was more than just him here. They were not going to stop until they found some answers about the falling pods.

“Micah!” Katlyn said urgently looking into the rear mirror at the police car a mile back and closing quickly.

“I am not normally a betting person but I think Officer Carver is
coming up behind us.” She pushed the pedal to the floor and hoped that they could gain a little ground. They weren’t far from where Micah had told her to stop, only another two miles.

“I think you’re right.” Micah said glancing over at her hoping she wouldn’t wreck when she saw this. It looked like there were a few things she was going to get to see a little sooner than he had hoped. Opening the car window Micah leaned out and opened his hand in the direction of the car behind them and concentrated. Almost immediately there was a fireball of white light that shot toward the car.

Katlyn watched in amazement at the sight in the rearview mirror. The cop car swerved off the road to avoid the ball of fire moving through the air.

“Micah
? Is there something you neglected to share with me in the last day or so?” Katlyn watched Micah settle calmly back into his seat. He could shoot things from his hands; that seemed to be a pretty big thing to forget to tell her.

Micah grimaced slightly and smiled at her, “It was one of those ‘learn as you go’ things.” he turned to look behind them to ensure Officer Carver still off the side of the road.

“Sweetheart, once we get out of this mess we are going to need to sit down and go over the list of ‘learn as you go’ things.” Katlyn glanced over at Micah and scowled.

Micah chuckled slightly under his breath; at least she was not afraid of him. He would take her being pissed over scared any day. Pissed he could work with.

“I promise you that I will write every one of them down for you.”

“Micah, behind us.” Katlyn glanced back at the solid black vans coming up quickly behind them. These didn’t look like regular cops, they looked like government vehicles. “If we make it out of this okay you are so in trouble.”

Micah leaned back out the side window and aimed for the road in front of the vans. He didn’t want to hurt anyone, but he would not allow Katlyn to be injured.

The road exploded in flames in front of the van causing two of the four vans to run off the road. Micah took careful aim again and released another fireball. One of the tires blew out on the third van. One more; just one more and they were home free. Katlyn watched as another explosion occurred behind them. He was pretty good at that fireball thing he was doing.

Sighing in relief she saw the last van fall further and further behind them. One more mile and she pulled off the road. “Micah, is this where I stop?”

Micah looked into the forest trying to find his marker. Spotting the almost invisible black mark on a tree off to the side of the road he nodded, “This is it. Come on.” He hopped out of the SUV and waited for her to join him. Stopping her as she started to move past him he cupped her jaw making her look up at him. “This is your last chance. Are you sure you want to do this?” Micah looked intently into her eyes, “There is no coming back.”

Katlyn covered one of his hands with hers and threaded her fingers through his. “We’re in this together. Let’s go.” She was not going to hang around and become a science experiment for the men in those black vans.

Micah raised her hand to his lips, “As you wish.”

Hiking through the woods Katlyn looked over at Micah, “What about the others that are here, will they be okay? This will cause the government to search harder until they find something solid.”

Micah glanced over at her, “They will be fine. Their circumstances are different so they should be safe. At least they are for now. We are the ones that are in trouble at the moment.” Micah could feel an urgency to move faster and pulled Katlyn along behind him quickening his steps.

“Micah, how far is it?” Katlyn fought the urge to look behind them; they were being followed; she could feel Micah’s concern as they moved quickly through the thick woods. If they didn’t get there real soon the men behind them would catch up.

“It’s up around those rocks.” Micah nodded toward a couple of huge boulders up ahead. “We need to hurry.” Once they were in the ship they would be fine. It was completely invisible to the human eye, they would be safe but they needed to get there first. Those that followed them were less than 500 feet away and they were closing fast.

Katlyn allowed him to lead and followed as quickly as she could trying not to trip over the roots that spread across the forest floor under a thin pile of leaves.

Micah hit a button on his watch and pulled Katlyn into the tiny vessel behind him, “Here we go.”

Closing the door quickly he breathed a sigh of relief, they had made it.
No sooner had he closed the entrance than the men were there. Katlyn could see them in the monitors above her head.

“Micah, can they hear us or see us?” She watched him move into one of the seats up front and begin hitting buttons.

“No, they cannot.” Katlyn moved to the other seat and continued to watch the men move carefully through the woods guns drawn. If the ship had been further away they wouldn’t have had a chance of making it. It didn’t look like the gentlemen searching for them had planned on talking either. Silently they waited as the men continued passed the vehicle and breathed a sigh of relief as they passed.

Micah looked over at her as she relaxed back into the seat. “Are you okay? They really have no idea we are here.”

Katlyn looked over at him, “I’m okay. Now that we are sitting here I’m wondering about the trip. How long does it take to get there?” Now that she had made the decision to go she was becoming excited about the idea. She would be the first to walk among those of another world. It was an awe inspiring thought.

Micah felt her enthusiasm and smiled, “It will take us about 3years, but we will be asleep for most of it. We can travel faster than what your scientist have ever thought possible.”
