Micah's Mate (Dark Sky) (16 page)

“It’s the way things are done and you can’t tell me that you plan to reach all of the families. It is just not possible.” Dr. Wallis removed the cap on a needle and moved closer to her. “This is going to sting a bit; once I give you this we can harvest the eggs tomorrow.”

Katlyn pulled harder at the binds on her wrists, “You can’t give me that hormone or take any eggs from me. I’m pregnant.”

Dr. Wallis paused then continued closer to her, “You’re lying. I would have heard if you were expecting. After all, who would be able to keep that quiet?”

“We chose not to tell anyone until I am out of the first trimester. As I am sure you can imagine there are just too many things that could go wrong. Call Maria and ask her.”

“That I can’t do. If I call her now they will know where you are.” Dr. Wallis moved closer to the bed. “Don’t worry, it won’t hurt much.”

“If you do this you threaten the life of my child.” Katlyn didn’t want to hurt him but by God she was not going to allow this to happen. Come to think of it, what did he plan to do with her once he took the eggs? He couldn’t return her to Micah; he would be dead. That only left one option and that was not one she would choose.

“One child for the lives of many; I’m sorry but I think that the end justifies the means.” Dr. Wallis was steps away from her still holding the needle.

Katlyn watched the doctor move closer and opened her hand. Thank the Lord he had tied her hands in front of her, this nut was not harming her child. A fireball rotated to life in the middle of her palm. “Please don’t make me hurt you.”

Dr. Wallis looked down at her hand and backed up slowly. “You should not be able to do that. Who gave you those abilities?”

“I asked for them, I wanted to be able to protect myself from people like you.” Katlyn concentrated on the swirling fireball and felt it grow and spin faster.

Dr. Wallis took a hesitant step back, “I am working for the greater good. You should want to help me.”

“As I said, I’m pregnant. I will not allow you to hurt my child.” Katlyn hoped Micah got there soon; she was not going to be able to hold this. Whatever he had given her had really messed with her head. She was not in control of herself and it was taking every bit of her power to keep the fireball spinning.

Katlyn called out to him with her mind, this might not work but she had to try. Concentrating, she pushed out with her mind to Micah calling his name. He had to hear her, she knew throwing the fireball was beyond her abilities at the moment but maybe luck would be with her on this. She was going to need help and she needed it now.

The doctor took a step forward and she summoned the energy to make the ball bigger, more threatening. Slowly he backed up a step and waited.

“You can’t hold it forever my dear, sooner or later you will weaken. I can wait.”

Dr. Wallis sat back in the chair and leaned back waiting for her to lower her guard. Katlyn pulled all of her will power and held the ball tightly.

Micah stopped moving toward the building when he heard her voice whisper through his mind. “Did you just hear that?”

Stochi looked back at Micah confused, “Hear what?”

“I just heard her call to me, but it was faint. We need to hurry.” They were still a little ways away from the bleak grey structure ahead of them. Micah picked up the pace and moved closer to the building. He didn’t know what was wrong with her but he felt the overwhelming urgency in her call. He began jogging forward with Stochi right beside him.

Once to the structure they stopped to listen. Busting in without paying attention might get someone killed. Taking care not to make any noise they eased the small door open and slipped inside the building, each taking an offensive stance.

Listening they could hear voices coming from the end of the building.

Micah motioned for Stochi to move ahead with him toward the back of the building. Half way there he heard Katlyn again, “Hurry Micah. I can’t hold it.”

He paused looking at Stochi but there was no indication that he had heard a thing.

Once they were back at the house she was going to have to let him know how she had done this.

“Ah, I see you are just about done playing aren’t you?” Micah could hear movement up ahead then Katlyn’s voice.

“You will not hurt my child.” She was weak; he could hear it in her voice.

“All I need are a few of your eggs then I will let you go, no one hurt.” Dr. Wallis moved across the room.

Katlyn drummed up the energy to focus the fireball his way, “No one hurt? How could you possibly let me live? Micah would kill you for this.”

Micah was at the door and peeked in. What he saw covered him in rage, his Katlyn was tied to a chair hands in front of her. Dr. Wallis was across the room with a needle and trying to get closer to her. It looked like every time he moved closer she pushed some energy into the fireball that was spinning in the palm of her hand. She didn’t have the energy to throw it at him but she was keeping him at bay with it. She looked strong sitting there facing off with this man but Micah could feel her waiver.

“Relax Niflet. I will take care of this.” Micah stepped into the room, placed one hand on her shoulder and focused his other one at the doctor. “Stochi help her.”

“Already here.” Stochi looked Katlyn over, “Haven’t you learned to stay out of trouble yet sis?”

Katlyn slumped down in the chair as Stochi began pulling the ties off of her hands and feet. “What can I say? I needed a little excitement.”

“Do you think you can walk?” Stochi could see the toll keeping the low level fireball going had had on her. Lifting his communicator he spoke softly in it to Maria. “We found her but it doesn’t look good, can you meet us at the clinic?”

Katlyn touched his arm, “Stochi, I think I am going to need a little help.”

There was no way she was going to be able to make it to the clinic. At the moment she wasn’t able to lift a hand. Thank God they had gotten here when they had.

“Micah, surely you don’t think only your family needs to have access to this chance to have children.” Dr. Wallis looked at Micah and pleaded, “I was only trying to do what was right.”

Micah growled at the smaller man, “You kidnapped my mate to use parts of her body for personal gain. Tell me, what were you going to do with her then? As she said, you couldn’t send her back to me; you knew I would kill you for what you had done. Not to mention that she is with child. You would have endangered my child by doing what you where planning.”  Micah advanced on the doctor and grabbed him by the nap of the neck.

“You will be punished for this, Stochi? Take this piece of filth and let me get Katlyn before she drops.”
Shoving the doctor forward Micah picked Katlyn up and whispered in her ear, “I found you my Niflet.”

“Micah? Make that man pay, please. Don’t let him or anyone else do this to the other women.” She groaned and held her head. “My head is throbbing; I don’t know what he gave me but it had some nasty side effects.” She leaned against his shoulder and sighed. “You picked a good time to show up; I wouldn’t have been able to hold the fireball much longer.”

“Sweetheart, no one will have to go through this again, I promise you that.” Micah held her close as he walked toward the door, very thankful that they had gotten to her in time.

Together they exited the building and found Maria already outside waiting on them. “Dr. Wallis, what did you give her?”

“It is only a sedative; it will not harm her, even if she is pregnant.” Dr. Wallis turned to Maria, “You did
n’t tell me about that. It would have saved me the effort.”

“Stochi, get him out of here before I h
urt him. Micah, can you please put Katlyn in the vehicle? I need to look at her to see if she is okay.” Mariah wanted to hook Katlyn up to a monitor, just to be on the safe side. She wouldn’t be satisfied until all of her blood levels were normal again.

After an hour hooked up to the machines Maria finally relented, “Okay, I think you are out of the woods, but I want you on strict rest for the next week. This has been too much excitement and stress on your body.” Maria began unhooking the wires that crisscrossed across Katlyn’s body.

“Are you sure Maria? We can stay longer if you think she needs to be monitored.” Micah looked up at his little sister; she had turned into one heck of a woman in the last few years.

Maria smiled down at him and laid a hand on his shoulder. “Get her home, she needs to rest. But I’m serious, absolutely no more excitement.”

“Niflet, are you ready to go home?”

“Please get me out of here Micah. I would love a bath and I’m starving.” Katlyn smiled over at Maria.

“Thank you Maria, for everything.”

Micah rose and pulled Katlyn up to her feet, “Are you ready to go also Maria?”

Maria rose and turned off the instruments, “Yes, let me grab my bag just in case.”

Once they made it home Micah and Katlyn went in while Maria moved the vehicle into the garage.

“Does everyone know what happened?” Katlyn grimaced at Micah’s nod. “Great, now everyone knows what an idiot I am. I should have known better than to walk to town by myself; especially under the circumstances.”

“You couldn’t have known he was going to be there waiting for you.”

Katlyn turned to him, “But I should have. I knew what would happen once people started finding out about the pregnancies and the egg donations. I got comfortable here and let down my guard.”

“Which was not a bad thing, we just need to be careful going forward. And as for the family, e
veryone is happy with your return and very glad that you are okay.” Micah held her hand as they walked toward the front doors.

“Oh, God, Micah. They now know we were working on egg donation don’t they?” Katlyn closed her eyes and whispered a prayer. “Lenec and William must be very angry at me.”

Micah stopped before he pushed the door open and cupped her jaw.

“Why would they be angry at you? You are trying to do something good for them and their mates.”

“Micah, I talked Sophia and Roslyn into it. The donated eggs are even now inside of them. They risked their lives because of what I suggested.” Katlyn took a deep breath.

Micah looked at his mate and smiled, “They will not be mad at you for this. Trust me Niflet.”

Pushing open the door he spotted his family calmly waiting at the dinner table for their arrival.

“Thank God you are home safe.” His mother rushed over to help Katlyn inside and smiled at her. “I hear you have not only chosen to be the first woman here to have a child but that you also thought of a way that my daughters could share in that also.” Micah’s mother led her over to the table, “You have been such a surprise for us here.”

Once she was seated Micah’s mother turned to Micah and kissed his cheek, “You chose well my son.”

Katlyn leaned back in the chair and looked over at Lenec and William. “I am sorry I placed your chosen in danger.”

Lenec looked at Katlyn and smiled, “If you could go back, would you change anything that you had done?”

Katlyn paused thinking about it. Frowning she shook her head, “No. I would choose the same actions.”

“Then it is not really an apology.” Lenec flinched as Roslyn punched him in the arm.

“Do not allow him to treat you that way sister. He is grateful of everything you have done, just as I am.” Roslyn smiled over at her. “You have given me hope and that I can never thank you enough for.”
