Carter Monroe dropped a few bills on the table and headed over to say hello. Only before he could reach her, she scrambled from her spot and took off for the safety of the ladies room. With a deep sigh, he sat across from Tara. “Why is she running away?”

She’s not used to the attention. She’ll be okay.” Tara smiled softly, happy for her friend. Something really nice was going on here. She just didn’t realize it yet. She was so hyped up in the adrenaline of what if, that she couldn’t stop to think...what if it’s good stuff.

Sydney’s heart raced when she saw him coming. She panicked. Dashing to the ladies room, she locked herself in one of the stalls and leaned against the door. She wasn’t ready to face him. She was afraid of what she’d say. She never worried about stuff like that before. She never had to. Guys rarely hit on her. They hit on her cute friend Tara. They hit on other girls. They didn’t hit on her. She was the smart one, one of the guys, one of the ones they’d pal around with, but not one of the girls they hit on.

Sydney forced a couple of deep breaths to calm down. She couldn’t hide in there forever. She’d have to go out and face him. Maybe he left. Maybe he saw her running and he took off. She was pretty sure he was still there. He was confident and strong. Dear goodness and sexy, and built like a brick house, and broad and delicious, and she was dying to see his bear. She wanted to run with him through the woods, to play with him, to… deep breath. You can do this.

Sydney summoned her courage and found her way back to the table.

So glad you could join us,” Carter said with a grin. He slid over, so she could sit beside him.

Hey,” she offered as casually as she could. Her heart was beating so loudly, she could barely hear anything else.

What’s going on?” It was so funny; acting like it was no big deal. Maybe it was no big deal. Maybe he was making it a bigger deal than it was. Maybe they could just be friendly, you know, pal around or something.

Not much, you?” Control the urge. Control the desire to sit on his lap and lick his lips.

Eh, same old, same old.”

What is this shit?” Tara watched their conversation, like a volley on a ping-pong table going nowhere fast.

They both turned and looked at her. “What do you mean?”

It’s almost dangerous to sit here with the two of you, as much as you’re sparking off of each other. There’s about to be a fire, and you’re both pretending there’s nothing there. Why?”

They both jumped in defensively, rattling off one thing after another.

Right. I’m going to go now, and leave the two of you to sort this out. I’m sure Carter can see you home.” Tara got up and started to pull out her wallet.

I’ve got it,” Carter said. “And, thanks.”

Tara nodded. They needed to figure this out, now.

Chapter 11

Carter’s hand slid onto Sydney’s thigh. “Do you want to hit the woods for a run?”

Sydney nodded, not knowing what else to say. She knew what they both needed. They needed to finish what they’d started. They needed to take it all the way and see what was going on. Was it simply the fact that they left mid-stride, or was it more?

She couldn’t get him out of her head. And it was obvious he was struggling with the same issue.

She felt bolder as her bear. She felt stronger. She was glad he wanted to run freely through the woods and take it primal. She needed to let her bear out. Her desires were too strong to pretend they didn’t exist.

Once they broke into stride, their bodies made the change. Shifting to all fours, solid and strong, their true powers were unleashed. Sydney was a fast runner. She loved the freedom of pushing herself hard. Carter kept pace and chased her playfully. After a bountiful, hard run, they slowed their pace and frolicked through the trees until they got to a clearing. The meadow was full of tall grass and wildflowers, and was a perfect place to set their passion free.

Carter only let her win until the clearing, and then he pounced, rolling with her. Coming out of the roll, him on top, they slid back to their human forms. He needed to taste her, and kissing was one of the best pleasures of being human. It was such a simple thing, but much more intimate this way.

Sydney looked up at the man over her. She was breathless, but it wasn’t from the chase. The raw and powerful man above her pushed her buttons. There was no way to deny the attraction. It didn’t matter if she tried. He brought out something in her no other man had. His size, his girth, his strength; it was more than being a handsome face. He was the one you knew could take care of you. He was strong. He was intense. And he wanted her. What wasn’t to love?

The way he looked at her spoke volumes. He needed to consume her, make her his, and own her in the moment. She had no way of knowing what the future would hold, and she stopped trying to confine it. If this was her moment in the sun with him, then so be it. She needed him as much as he needed her right now.

It was hard not to notice the way his arms curved. His biceps bulged and his shoulders were as wide as a beam. Nature had built him perfectly. Any woman would be drawn to the man. Everything inside tingled. Butterflies fluttered in her belly, her heart raced, and more than anything she grew damp with arousal at the thought of him within her.

She knew he couldn’t promise her tomorrow. She didn’t ask. Sydney hated that it was the way with nature, and while some bears committed to a mate, most were loners. She got that. She grew up that way. She understood bears...but it didn’t mean she didn’t long to keep one of her own. Between them, they’d make amazing cubs, adorable and smart, though she was getting ahead of herself. He’d be gone when it was over. She wasn’t a fool. She’d fought these chance encounters most of her life...but today, she wanted nothing more than at least this moment with Carter.

His dark hair contrasted his light eyes, and the stubble on his face left her dizzy with lust. It was just the kind of look that got her excited, though she’d rarely admit that to her friends. She’d play it off when others fawned over a guy with good looks. ‘They’re only as hot as their brain,’ she’d say. It was a protective nature more than anything. She knew guys like that didn’t go for round, soft girls like her. Most liked the leaner, harder bodied girls. Slender and strong, not curvy and too padded.

Only, beneath Carter, she didn’t have to lie to anybody. Her truth was her body’s response. He was damn hot. Sydney could have easily stared into his eyes all day and been happy with just that. She was a hot-blooded female after all.

Carter leaned down and licked Sydney’s lips seductively before pressing his tongue into her. Closing her eyes, she got lost in his warm, wet mouth over her own. Her insides were bursts of light and pleasure, feeling him over her. He slipped his arms around her and rolled her on top of him. “I want to feel your body pressed to mine,” he said with a grin, and held her tightly, his lips back on her mouth.

She wanted him in ways she’d never wanted anyone before. It was as if all of her harnessed sexuality was ready to stream out. The dam had been broken.

His kisses grew hungrier, lustier, as he sucked her tongue and then nuzzled her neck. His mouth milked her skin as his hands roamed her body.

Sydney rolled her neck to the side, letting him coax out her inner goddess with his experienced mouth. Soft moans spilled from her lips.

His fingers moved down to the small of her back, and then over her curved, round bottom. Squeezing and kneading her, Sydney knew she was in trouble. There’d be no going back. She wanted him too badly. She wanted to feel him between her legs, she wanted him to lick her, taste her, and sample her honey. She wanted to feel his fingers exploring her folds, and for his mouth to lock on her nipple and suck her as if he was trying to milk her. She needed him so desperately; she was almost ready to beg. She’d never let go like this before...allowing the passion to wash over her and leaning into it. It was time.

Carter and Sydney tangled together in long heated moments of lust. Now unfettered and naked, their bodies pressed to one another, he spoke. “Wait, let me look at you in all of your glory,” he said with a soft smile. “You’re beautiful.”

Sydney blushed. She wasn’t used to words like that.

Being a bear that needed that special golden honey, he wasted no time in seeking out what he wanted most of all. “Sit on my face,” he whispered, and turned her around so she was looking at his massive cock.

Her heart skipped a beat as she felt his tongue lash out at her clit and then envelope her, pressing it into her glorious, lush, wetness. Sydney called out into the sky, the pleasure washing through her. She was turned on, with him licking and lapping up every golden drop, suckling her nectar and taking her to heights of arousal that she could barely wrap her head around.

She couldn’t control the grinding, and as she pressed back into him, he groaned showing his pleasure. He loved that she got into the moment and let go. Gripping her hips, he pulled her into her face tighter, until she squirmed with glee, an orgasm ricocheting through her as she bucked on his face.

Breathless, she finally dropped forward, unable to sit up any longer. Her face was pressed beside his massive cock, thick and hot, throbbing with an intensity she couldn’t resist. She wrapped her hands around him and teased him with her tongue. In the pleasure that followed, her own selfish needs won out as she turned her body around and pressed onto him, needing to feel him inside.

She let out a deep groan as his shaft spread her open and penetrated her deeply. Sydney lowered her hips as much as her body was willing. Her breasts swayed back and forth as she rode him.

Watching her rock on his body was amazing, but Carter needed control. He wrapped her in his arms and rolled, him coming out on top. He had powerful thighs and wanted to thrust fast and hard, feeling her insides massage him like a glove.

Carter’s bear wanted to come out, to own the moment, but he forced himself to stay human. A deep growl bellowed from within as he pushed into her again. Together they changed position, and with her on all fours this time, he gripped her sweet, fat hips and pushed into her from behind. Her body ached with pleasure. It was a good ache, but when he licked his finger and pressed it into her tight little pucker, it set her over the edge. Sydney bucked up into him, her back arching. The wave of ecstasy rolled through her. Feeling her reaction, seeing her, hearing her, it was the moment he couldn’t hold back any longer. Planting his seed in her, Carter felt his release. Nature would spread his seed, and if the moment was meant to take, it would take. He wanted to own her, consume her, to make her his own. And in that moment she was. There was no question in their minds. He was the king of the hour and she was his queen.

Wrapped into Carter’s arms, Sydney had never felt more alive. The couple stared up at the clouds and spoke softly, still naked under the sun’s heat.

Carter leaned his cheek against Sydney’s head. “So what do you think of the Primordial gravitational wave discovery?”

Well, it could really change things for quantum physics and general relativity, but it’s still so early in the game. I can’t wait to watch things develop and to see what direction it pulls the conversation.” She sighed. Real conversation. This was so much better than the mundane conversations she had with so many others.

It definitely leads to questioning,” he said, and nuzzled his nose in her silky, long hair. This he could get used to.

They covered Higgs boson and photonic molecules, and then rolled over and made love again. The experience was unlike anything he’d had before. Sex had always been about raw power, over bearing, proving his strength and his place in the world, but with Sydney, it felt different. It was special. He didn’t have to prove anything. He was simply being himself.

Chapter 12

Carter had never properly dated before. He simply prowled and enjoyed the bounty. But something changed when Sydney entered his life. He knew there was one last test for him to know for sure. With the coming of the red moon, nature would tell him what he needed to know. Could he stay true? Would she be the one for him? Or would he stray, his body seeking out a primal urge elsewhere.

He wanted to believe he had his libido under control, and she could satisfy all of his needs, but nature predicted a path he couldn’t always guess. With the red moon rising soon, the tension lay thick in his belly. What if after all this time, biology took over and she couldn’t tame him after all? A family had never been in his plans before. He figured he’d plant his seed as nature dictated and leave it at that. Only with Sydney, everything changed. He wanted a family. He finally understood the needs and wants of those who settled down.

Each moment the red moon came closer, he grew more itchy. He ached to be free and run.

Sydney wasn’t a fool. While these last few weeks, almost months had been amazing, the truth was she knew the red moon could play havoc with relationships. It could tear them apart and spell a truth she didn’t want to see. He was meant to roam free, a loner in nature, seeding as many cubs as he could. She didn’t like that one bit. She wanted to be the only one, his only one.

With the moon high, a beacon from the sun burning behind it, the red glow cast into the sky. Sydney looked at Carter and opened the door, setting him free. If he truly wanted her, he’d be by her side. Nature would make that final decision in their world. Their humans thoughts were one thing, and most of the time in their bear states, those human thoughts remained. But with the pull of the red moon it became about primal urges. Common sense and logic went out the window.  Your human didn’t make the decision during the red moon, your bear did.

She knew her own bear would come out, though the urgency was heightened in males, especially alpha males like Carter. He couldn’t control it. She understood. She grew up in this world. It didn’t mean she had to like it, but it was a matter of their survival. Nature did what nature did for a reason. Shifters weren’t immune to that.
