No, Sean’s plan was best. So by morning, they were gone, heading off to parts unknown with Sean promising to have Keefer call the next day and let us know what he thought. I had little doubt the answer would be, “This is fine.” Whatever Sean had going on with these kids, he’d be giving them a good place, and Keefer was smart—he knew he couldn’t survive out here on his own. Better to take what Sean offered until he was old enough to make his own choices.
As we drove back from the airport, I stifled a yawn.
“Your place or mine?” Adam asked.
“Which is closer?”
He laughed. “We won’t be able to ask that soon.”
He said it casually, but I caught the faintly anxious look, the one that checked on my reaction. I smiled and put my hand on his leg. “Good.”
A few minutes in silence, then I said, “After we get some sleep, can we look at what’s out there to live in together?”
He grinned. “We can. What do you want? House? Townhouse condo?”
“We’ll keep our options open. It’s a first home. We can always change our mind and move later.”
His grin broadened as he took my hand, fingers lacing with mine. “We absolutely can.”
