11. Details of Murad Bey’s reaction, the conversations at the
divan
and the reactions in the streets appear in Turc,
L’Expédition des Français en Égypte,
pp. 25, 27–30. This does not match with the edition translated by Gaston Wiet published in Cairo in 1950. The two translations frequently differ, with some details appearing in one but not in the other. This suggests that there may have been more than one manuscript, as indeed there was more than one translator (I know of three, all of whom differ); any of the translators or copyists involved in these different versions could well have chosen to leave out details they considered too fanciful or historically irrelevant.
