Children in Her Shadow (37 page)

Daianne, by now completely overcome with emotion slipped out of the room asking Mary if she would wait whilst she went back upstairs to see her family.

Daianne explained to the family gathered around her mother’s bed that an old friend of their mother, someone called Mary Morgan, was waiting in the front room asking if she could see their mother.

The family hardly had time to absorb what they were hearing before they heard Ruth calling. “Did you say Mary, Mary Morgan is here?”

Ruth had found an inner strength that had eluded her for many days as she repeatedly asked for confirmation that Mary was in the house. Finally, Daianne went to her Mother’s side and said, “Yes Mam, Mary is here but who is she and do you really want to see her?” Ruth explained in a weak and faltering voice that Mary was her only friend from her past. “Mary knows me better than you do” she said, “but I want to see her alone.”

Mary was carefully helped up the stairs and taken to Ruth’s bedside. As the family looked on, Mary took their dying mother in her arms, and as she did they saw their mother at peace for the first time in weeks. Not wishing to intrude any longer, the family quietly left the room and closed the door.

Life’s journey for Ruth was now complete.
