Capturing the Alpha (Shifters of Nunavut Book 1) (23 page)

After a moment, Zane laid down, bringing Ginnifer down beside him. He turned her so that her back was to his chest, and his hand could rest comfortably on her abdomen.

She put her hand over his. “Earlier, when I called it a
he
, I wasn’t being silly. Before Boaz and Tallow brought me back, I saw Genie at the clinic in Port Trent. She has this big, clunky machine that…well, I’m not sure how it works, but she was able to see the baby—the
pup
. He’s a boy.”

Her chest swelled as she remembered finally agreeing to look at the screen. She told Zane about the perfectly shaped head, the long limbs, and beautifully beating heart. As he listened quietly, she could hear his own heart pounding behind his muscled chest.

When she finished, he hooked his other arm under her waist, so that he could cup her belly with both hands. He pressed a kiss to the top of her head and said, “I don’t think I’ll be able to sleep for a week. I know when I wake up, this will all have been a dream.”

It reminded her of Jack’s cheesy pickup line, but instead of making her laugh, she wanted to cry. She turned onto her back to look up at him.

“I’m never leaving you again,” she told him. “I love you, Zane. I’m staying here, with you, and with our pup, no matter what happens.”

He made love to her again after that, and when they were done, she told him to sleep, promising that she wouldn’t leave his arms until he woke. There was much that still needed to be addressed between them. She’d left a note for Astrid, who had been out of state when Ginnifer had left, but she knew that she’d have to eventually call and give her family a proper explanation. And when the time did come for her to give birth, she wanted to at least be in Port Trent so that Genie could handle the delivery—and the pain medication.

Above all, there was still the broken alliance between Siluit and Sedna, which she felt personally responsible for. It was only a matter of time before that sword fell on them, and with the entire tundra seeming poised for upheaval, she hoped Sedna would be the only great challenge they faced.

But laying in the arms of Zane, her alpha, her mate, and the father of her child, all of those troubles seemed far off. She let herself drift off in his arms, knowing that whatever came their way, they wouldn’t be facing it alone.
