Between the Waters (Symphony of Light) (25 page)

I swallowed. “OK.” I narrowed my eyes.

“Last night, I…saw…things. I’ve told you before, when we make love it’s impossible for me not to slip into your mind.”

“I know. I learned the hard way.”

“Yes, we both did. If you had only told me your foolish plan, we might have avoided a lot of this.”

The realization that the deaths of the night before fell in equal parts to me hit me with a wave of crushing guilt, but the thing he said next distracted me.

“Anyway, I took for granted that you’ll acclimate to this world—the violence, the magic, our view of sexuality. I never considered how human your wants and desires might be. You are not like other women; you’re strong and powerful, worthy of a place at my side, in my bed. Perhaps I am looking to make you my queen when you would rather be my wife.”

“Are you proposing?” I laughed.

“If that’s what you want. I’m trying to explain that I may not always know what to give you.”

I shook my head. I didn’t know what I wanted, so how could I possibly tell him? “Since just last night you were offering to share me with your friends, we might want to hold off on the nuptials.”

“Light, I’m trying to say that I’ll work to be more human for you, if that’s what you want.”

I lifted the tray, leaned over the side of the bed, and sat it on the floor. Turning back to him, I touched his face. “That’s a very generous offer, especially coming from you. I’m caught between worlds, and the endless future of uncertainty is frightening. But, Cyril, before I can answer you, I have to figure out who and what I am.”

“You’re my Light. That’s all you need to know.”

Chapter Eighteen

Green

My back hit the bed just before Cyril pounced.

He buried his head in my neck and ground his groin into mine. “You are in so much trouble,” he growled.

“You were only gone six hours.”

He crushed his mouth against mine. Wet, rough kisses. “It feels like days. The magic in that place had me on edge. I need release.”

He rocked against my fully clothed body, creating a delightful friction. He rose to his knees and reached for the lacing on his leather pants, undoing the tie.

“I’m going to fuck you so hard, you’ll be lucky if you remember your own name.”

The door swung up. Rhys stumbled into the room still in his black battle gear. Concern crossed his features.

“What do you want?” Cyril forced through clenched teeth.

“You’re not going to believe it.”

Cyril paused. He stared at Rhys—obviously reading his mind.

“I’m coming.” He retied the bow on his pants.

I jumped up and followed.

He turned around and commanded, “Stay here!”

He and Rhys exited the room in a flash.

Today was not the day to become obedient. I followed, keeping quiet, thanks to my bare feet.

I rounded the corner and stood just outside the room they used for medical treatment. It looked like something you might find at an urgent care center—examination table and cabinets stocked with medical supplies and a small sink.

Their voices were clear.

“Am I crazy?” Rhys’s voice shook.

“No. Where did you find her?”

“She was in a chamber in the basement of the compound,” Sinclair announced.

I maneuvered so that I could see the men. Their backs were to me. The mystery woman was obscured.

“Has she spoken to anyone?” Cyril folded his arms.

“No. I tried. It’s almost like she’s catatonic. What is in her eyes? Is that emerald?” Sinclair leaned in toward the woman’s supine body.

“Cyril, how can it be? It can’t be the same woman—that innkeeper’s daughter from Scotland—can it? That was nearly four hundred years ago.” Rhys moved to the other side of the table, giving me a view of the tiny woman with long red hair.

Cyril grumbled. “Light, I can smell you. Don’t you ever listen?”

I squeezed past him to gaze upon her. She was beautiful. Fair skinned, light freckles, and delicate features, but where her eyes once were rested emerald green orbs. It made her look like something from a horror film.

Rhys leaned in for a better look at her face. “It is definitely her. She’s breathing. But it’s impossible. She was human. What was her name?”

Cyril paused, pulled me to him, and in a flat, matter-of-fact tone said, “Celestine.”

When Cyril returns, he’s still gorgeous, but this time he’s beyond human, far less dead, and pissed. His group of six supernatural men share a tantalizing secret, but despite the hunger, it’s love that leads her to sacrifice everything to save him…
