Autumn Lake (12 page)

Epilogue

One week later

Gaylord Martin wasn’t too damned happy about his new handler assignment but he wasn’t about to voice his opinion. Not only was the chief leery of him, no thanks to Marcs, but he wasn’t exactly in his corner now that Sampson had lost his job.

“So I’m supposed to report to you?”

“Yes.” Agent Lake stared up at him as if she’d already decided not to like him. She damn sure wouldn’t trust him and if Gaylord’s gut was worth a cuss, he’d dare to bet he couldn’t sweet talk her in front of the chief.

“How often will we be in touch?”

“I’ll let you know,” she said, crossing her arms and acting as if she were already accustomed to her superior position.

Gaylord grated back a cuss word or two before he focused on Marcs. “This suits you. Hmm?”

“Suits both of us if you ask me.” His upper jaw twitched and Gaylord wasn’t buying it. Marcs wasn’t happy about reporting to a woman but he’d play the game in front of Malory, too.

“Any reason why you aren’t working this case yourself?” Gaylord asked.

“I have other assignments, Gaylord. If it’s a problem, I can pull you out.”

“No problem here.” He made a point to respond rapidly.

Seemingly pleased, Malory said, “Good. Then it’s settled. You men will report to Agent Lake. When she calls you in, you’ll meet and if you have anything, you’ll run it through her. Any questions?”

“Where’s the broad?”

“Who?” Marcs asked, arching a brow.

“You know who, Marcs. Agent Pain? Where is she?”

“I’m glad you asked.” Logan thrust his shoulders back and stood an inch taller. “She would’ve been here today but she was unavailable. I told her I’d bring her up to speed at a later date.”

“Huh. I see. So women have special treatment around here now?”

Autumn stepped up to the plate then, proving she couldn’t be easily intimidated by him or anyone else. “Actually, women around here aren’t given special treatment at all. From what I understand it’s the men in these parts who often use their position to gain personal favors and such. So you know, there won’t be another Victory Rising occasion on my watch, Gaylord.”

He snarled. “I don’t know what you’re talking about.”

Logan laughed, boarded his bike, and said, “Oh and uh, speaking of Victory? That’s why Summer couldn’t make it today. She’s a bridesmaid. Victory and Devon are tying the knot.” He shot Gaylord a gouging wink. “I gotta roll guys. I wouldn’t miss this wedding for anything in the world.”

A few seconds later, Logan was gone. Gaylord braced for outright condemnation. None of the higher ups had faith in him anymore. He’d been in place for too long. He now sat at the head of the Devil’s Angels’ table and wore the title of club president. The title alone came with a lot of speculation.

His hands were dirty. And these two knew he was dirty.

“I’m assuming we’re done here?” Gaylord dug in his pocket for his key. He needed to blow off some steam. At one time, he used Victory for that. Now, he took one club broad or another and occasionally went home to visit his wife.

“We’re done,” Autumn said. “I’ll be in touch.”

“I’m looking forward to it.”

Malory stuck his index finger in the air and said, “Oh and uh, Gaylord?”

“Yeah?” He threw his leg over his bike and stuck the key in the ignition.

“If I hear one word, just one negative thing about you now, I’m pulling you out. Are we clear?”

He opened his mouth to speak but Malory put his hand up. “Just say, ‘Yes, Chief Malory. I understand.’ Then we can all go home and call it a day.”

Gaylord snarled. “Yeah. I understand.”

He was no man’s puppet.

“That’s good enough for me,” Malory said.

Gaylord tore out of there like a bat out of hell. His fury consumed him as he opened up the throttle and sped toward the clubhouse.

He didn’t know who made the decision to put Autumn Lake in as his handler or what kind of bad joke they were playing on him, but that bitch had a lot to prove if she wanted to earn his respect. In fact, she’d never earn it.

There was only one place for a gal who looked like that and Gaylord had every intention of seeing her there. Once she was on her back, begging for cock, and taking it like a woman should, Gaylord would teach her a few lessons. Then, he’d send the Bureau a message. They were long overdue.

Yeah. He’d befriend Agent Lake. Then, he’d fuck her. And when her body ended up being a floater, the higher ups wouldn’t have anyone to blame but themselves.

Malory fucked the hell up this time. And one day soon, Gaylord would let him know all about it.

Unable to deny his infatuation with the lovely Miss Road, Logan’s life just became more complicated. To make the situation worse, vultures are circling. If Logan doesn’t claim Sassy as his old lady, club members will pass her around for their own twisted pleasure.

Logan refuses to see Sassy used, but when he discovers her true motive for associating with the Heroes and Rogues, he fears an intimate involvement could destroy them both. Then again, losing Sassy is a higher price than he’s willing to pay.
