Without Kent there as a buffer, I fell uncomfortably silent for a few minutes. I hated this part of meeting a new volunteer. I had come out to the whole town a little while before college so whenever I met someone new I was never sure how to go about letting them know I was gay. While almost everyone accepted me with no problem, there were some that barely tolerated me and there were a couple of others that lived up to the redneck homophobic stereotype. So I could either tell the new person right away and risk them being uncomfortable, or not say anything and risk them finding out from somebody else that might not like me too much.
Mason stood silently for a few more minutes before he sighed. “You don’t need to worry about telling me anything. Sam already talked to me.”
I winced. “Let me guess, he told you to be careful about me. That I would take every chance to ogle your body and might try to seduce you over to the dark side.”
“Pretty much.”
I stayed quiet, trying to get a read on what he thought of it. I guess I looked as hesitant as I felt and he took pity on me.
“I have no problems with you being gay,” he said in a quiet voice, pausing uncomfortably before continuing. “I am not interested that way, but I could use some new friends.”
I relaxed, swallowing my disappointment. “Friends sounds great. Let’s go get your info put together.”
As we walked over to the computer I looked over at Tosh. She read my expression instantly and gave me a gentle smile of understanding. I shook off my crushed fantasy as best I could. I had a good life without being in a relationship. I was happy with the friends and family I had.
Even I didn’t believe that whopper.
