the president announced that Walker had done no wrong, that the property he had destroyed belonged to the Sioux, and that consequently no action could be taken against him or the tribe, Jeri surprised her mother when she appeared in the kitchen, wearing a smile. “Hi, Mommy,” she said. Her eyes moved to the toast.

June's heartbeat picked up. She took a deep breath, embraced her daughter, and walked with her to one of the living room windows.

The tip of a tree branch was rising and falling, and leaves were fluttering to the ground.

Louie was back.
