The Deadliest Secret (The Deadliest Series) (22 page)

“I’m sick of your bullshit Kody.” Russel announced and pulled the sheet off of Kody’s body, the cool air made Kody tense up even more.

“Then let’s handle it.” Kody hopped down from his bed and the two males stood shoulder to shoulder, the air between them cracked with tension, the cells around them went silent, the others knew something was going to happen when the two hot headed males stood without flexing a single muscle.

Kody was the first to attack, he did not back down from any challenge issued to him from any inmate not even his cellmate. This feud had been a long time coming. Kody threw his left shoulder into Russel’s right to knock him off balance. The sudden impact of his shoulder worked, he straightened quickly and brought his fist to Russel’s temple. Kody couldn’t hear anything other than the rush of blood in his ears, he could see the other men’s open screaming mouths and their excitement that there was action, this meant his time was limited, the alarm had already sounded most likely.

Russel had regained his equilibrium and tried to stand again Kody raged on, his fisted met with Russel’s stomach over and over again.  Russel swung wildly at Kody and managed to knock Kody’s jaw, it rang his bell but Kody was demonic in his thirst for blood, the blow to his head drove him further, the voices telling him which moves would secure his victory. One more blow landed to Russel’s stomach and when he bent over to force air into his lungs Kody used that moment to pull Russel by his hair and slam his head into his knee, instantly the broken nose leaked the crimson fluid that matched Kody’s vision. Russel staggered back against the wall; his hands went up signifying he was giving up. Kody grabbed him once more and slammed his forehead into the wall. The blood remained on the wall; Kody was in a trance and continued to destroy Russel’s face. Kody heard the satisfying crunch of more bones breaking in his cellmate’s face, he refused to stop, it had only been seconds since the first fist was thrown but Russel’s face would be unidentifiable by the time Kody was finished. He kept bashing Russel’s head, the blood was free flowing and Russel was passed out. His entire body was limp and breathing was shallow.

Kody’s vision was returning to normal and the adrenaline wasn’t flowing as fast forcing the blood into his ears and he could now hear the rapid footsteps of the guards, he knew he would most likely be put down hard, for doing this. If he was going to put down he might as well make sure Russel was put down permanently. Kody stepped behind the male, Russel’s limp body slumped against his legs, Kody stood straight up and opened his arms wide, the other men began to give their battle cry of approval, like apes they jumped and hooted for Kody to take it just one step further, Kody gave them their wish. He gripped Russel’s head and jerked it hard and fast to the left. There was a satisfying snap that sounded; somehow above all the other noise Kody heard that blissful sound echo through the corridor. Russel’s body fell; it no longer held any interest for Kody.

Kody had finally followed through on his threat from their first night. He killed that bitch of a cellmate. He sat on his bed and laughed as the guards ran to his cell and fought to open it. They were screaming orders at him, the knowledge that Kody had killed the fucker lying in a pool of his own blood pleasured almost as much as having his Gwen around him again… almost. Kody laid down on his stomach with his hands behind his back so the guards could take him to solitary. He was almost cheerful as he contemplated how long his stay would be this time.

Chapter seventeen

Monday had come yet again and Gwen was too bored not to go back to work at McNeil. She had spent the weekend reading and when Torrian was there she spent time doing her other favorite activities that just happened to involve a bed and a lack of clothing.  She had spent hours thinking, while Torrian was asleep with his arms wrapped protectively around her, Gwen thought about Kody and what happened, and what she would have to do about the situation. While she showered she reflected on her thoughts from the week and some decisions came to her. Her first stop for the morning would be her office to drop off her personal belongings then she had to meet the warden to discuss exactly what happened and turn another copy of her report in for the investigation.

By the time Gwen set foot on the island’s soil she felt a tight coil of nerves in her stomach and her hands began to shake with the uncertainty she felt in her heart about returning to face her coworkers and her patients, they all undoubtedly heard what had happened with Kody. Gwen didn’t stick around for the welcome wagon that came her way. She held onto Torrian who pulled her through the throng of well-wishers and towards the warden’s office. He closed the door behind them.  Torrian chuckled slightly, much to Gwen’s horror he was smiling and laughing… at her.

“Damn baby I think everyone missed you.” He struggled to keep his laughing to a minimum.

“No it’s sympathy, you can see it in their eyes, they don’t really mean it they just want me to tell them about it.” Gwen’s tone was incredibly snarky.

“They were glad to see you back, well everyone but Alison. She is still pissed I wouldn’t let her tickle my pickle.” He smiled his good boy smile, his dimples melted her heart, leave it to Torrian to make any situation less stressful.

“What?” Gwen spit out as she began to laugh.

“Yeah, she wants to fuck but I’d never touch her, too plastic, and she never shuts the fuck up.” He peeked through the blinds out the window that faced the office area, he watched the warden take long strides towards his office.

“What are you looking at?” Gwen inquired.

“The warden is coming, and he’s shooing everyone off so you can make a clean getaway babe.” He turned his megawatt smile back on her and her heart fluttered, this Adonis was hers and wanted her, how did she ever get so lucky?

Gwen waited for the knock on her door, she invited the warden in with her cheeriest “come in” and he entered with a sour look on his face. Her blood ran cold, perhaps this was it, she was going to be fired for breaking the rules the way she had been with Torrian, and with Kody. Gwen was unable to maintain eye contact and looked at her desk.

“Yes warden?” She asked softly.

“Lift your damn head girl you aren’t going to get spanked.” The warden chided.

Torrian laughed but attempted to cover his laugh with a cough, Gwen shot him a dirty look. He grinned back at her then she turned her attention to her boss that was handing down her fate.

“Yes sir.”

“Gwen I know it’s your first day back but I have some good, and some bad news for you. Bad is you are going to have to deal with Kody McQueen at least one more time, I called his judge about his many indiscretions in this prison and attacks on my employees so we are testing his mental capacities and most likely going to be executing him through lethal injection.  I need you to take point on this, you know him inside and out, you know this case. Will you do that for me?” His face looked like he was hiding some detail.

Gwen hesitated; Torrian was taking a step forward to answer for her when she blurted out, “Yes, yes I will run the investigation for you.”

Torrian’s jaw dropped then came back up, he was angry. He was magnificent when he was angry but still terrifying. If she didn’t know him and if she weren’t in love with him she would have ran from the room with her hands above her head. Torrian would never hurt her; he was too good of a guy to do that.

“Next order is you are not getting demoted, fired or anything in that nature. So get that shit out of your head, I would fight for you if needed but the work you have done was proof enough you would never jeopardize our prisoner’s comfort or confidentiality in any means shape or form. Kody can be transferred to a different psychologist for his remaining therapy sessions if he still chooses to attend them.  You will be kept away from him as much as possible, and a few of your patients are being transferred so you can handle the case. Understood?”

“Yes sir.” Gwen’s head lifted, she was ecstatic she was not going to have to look for a new job or go to her father’s clinic and hang her head in shame because of this being on her record.

There was another knock on the door. Gwen almost jumped out of her skin. The unexpected noise jolted her system more so than it ever had done before. Torrian went to the door and opened it but he blocked the view of the person into the office. She heard Alison’s small voice purr at Torrian. “I need to deliver papers to Miss Bjorkman.”

“It’s DOCTOR Bjorkman and I will take those.” Torrian snatched the papers much to Alison’s dismay, he dismissed her and brought them over to the desk for Gwen to look over and sign, they were simple transfer papers.

She flicked her wrist a few times and the papers were signed, three of her patients were being changed because of workload and priorities. The warden cleared his throat and demanded the attention; his voice was soft when he spoke to Gwen again. “Are you sure you are okay to be back here Gwen? I had everything cleaned while you were away, disinfected too. If you need more time or anything let me know, we have worked together for a long time Gwen and I want you to be well. Did you see that doctor the state wanted you to see?”

“Yes he gave me useful tips that would work for me, I am just a little jumpy with loud noises right now, I am so used to the silence now.” Gwen lied, she was jumpy because of noise, yes, but the real reason she was so much more so was because of her experience, with Kody, there had been so much noise in her head and the only thing that saved her was a glass object that hit the floor. She couldn’t even remember what she had knocked over at this point but she was grateful for it’s sudden departure from her life.

“Well I’ll let you be, Torrian my office when you get a minute.” The warden looked at Torrian knowingly.

This couldn’t be good. Torrian smirked at his boss for a moment then turned his attention back to Gwen with his usual light shining in his eyes. She looked down then back up at him, what was her problem today, she could not keep eye contact with anyone. Torrian gripped under her chin and lifted her face. Her bright eyes lifted to his warm gray-blue eyes. She melted under his gaze.

“Baby girl I have to get to work, I love you and stay safe.” Then his head craned and he kissed her, his lips were synching with hers and she felt the movements down between her legs, she was ready to have him right there in her office, on her desk.

Too soon Torrian stopped moving his lips and chuckled, “Now I have to go see the warden with a raging hard on, damn you got power over me babe.”

He took a few steps back and repeated his love for her, and then he walked out the door to meet with the warden, leaving Gwen to her reading.

Torrian made the jaunt to the warden’s office fast, his long legs ate the distance with minimal effort. He reached the large, heavy door and knocked on it before opening, Torrian knew he was expected there was no need to wait for a response from the warden.

“Why don’t you come in?” The warden said in his dry sarcastic tone.

“I think I will.” Torrian’s voice was light and airy, he was trying to turn the situation into a more lax one while he took his seat across from the Scott Wickam.

“Brass tax time how is she?” The warden cut straight to the chase as he always did when it was just the males around, he gave Gwen and the other females more consideration.

Torrian ran his hands over his face and over the stubble of his face and buzz cut. “Well hell. She can be real good at some points and real tense at others. Best thing to do is keep that Kody McQueen bastard away from her. I don’t want him ever coming near her again.” Torrian’s voice was very final on the last sentence.
