As she covered her mouth, tears began pouring down her cheeks. “How did you know? How did you get…?” She scanned the crowd for her grandparents.
They were front and center, waving, their faces shining with happiness.
“Well, here’s the thing. I got back from Detroit three days ago. The first place I went was to your house to ask Walter for his blessing, which he gave.” Adam nodded towards her papa, and the crowd cheered as he waved. “Then, before I left, Dolores told me that
this
was the ring you’ve always dreamed of wearing. So I got back in my car, went straight to the airport, flew to Florida, and, after three canceled flights, four layovers, and one broken-down rental car, here I am.”
Jane was sobbing, and laughing, and sobbing. She couldn’t control the emotions pouring out of her. Reaching out, she touched Adam’s cheek, scruffy with a sexy five-o’clock shadow. Sniffing, she said shakily, “You didn’t have to do that.”
“Yes, I did. Because it was your dream and I don’t just want be the man who puts that smile on your face and the man who is lucky enough to take care of you. I also want to be the man who makes all your dreams come true.”
“Done!” she exclaimed, and more laughter rippled through the crowd.
Adam’s face broke out in another breathtaking smile as he said, “Good. Well then, how about making my dream come true? Jane Marshall, will you marry me?”
“Yes!” Jane cried as she threw herself against him.
He stood to catch her, and she wrapped her arms so tight around his neck that she was scared she might cut off his oxygen.
The entire crowd erupted with applause as Adam lowered her to the floor and slipped the ring on her finger. Then he said in a soft voice, “Mine.”
She remembered that he’d told her grandparents that that was what he’d thought when he had seen her for the first time. Looking up into his baby-blue eyes, Jane whispered, “Yours. Always.”
Leaning down, Adam kissed her. She was only vaguely aware of the whistling and people yelling for them to get a room. The rest of the world disappeared, and all that existed was her and Adam. She knew that, in fifty years, it would still be like that. She’d found the kind of love her grandparents had.
As she kissed Adam like they were the only two people on earth, Jane knew that he hadn’t just made her dreams come true. He’d fulfilled her grandparents’ dreams too. All they wanted was for her to be happy, and she was.
Really. Truly. Happy.
