“You won’t,” he says matter-of-factly and I laugh.

“You think you know me that well, huh?”

“I know you, Blue. We share souls, you and I. There’s no hiding anything when God allows that.”

I fight the tears that want to come and clear my throat before walking back into his arms and hugging him tight.

“I got you a graduation present today,” he says and I realize now why he and Carter left me and April so hastily this morning.

“What?”

He pulls up his suit jacket and shirt grunting a little from the last shoulder operation, but as I back up a little I see his tattoo in the soft glow of the lights. He raises his shirt high, almost to his nipple and that’s when I see it; a sweet little blue bird in the bonsai.

“Heaven and earth meet at the bonsai and now that you’re on the bonsai, and with me, it doesn’t matter where we are as long as we are together. I love you, Blue.”

I can’t fight against another tear so I let them fall, blinking them away so I can gaze into his beautiful eyes. I say the words I have only ever said to him: “I love you more.”

He smiles and my belly flutters. I’m loving that flutter now. It’s no stranger. It’s my companion when he’s with me. It’s a reminder of a love story.

He reaches across at a flyaway hair, tucking it behind my ear before his fingers trace a tear down my jaw and the music from the stage surrounds us. “I loved you first.”

“You win.”
