In A Heartbeat (9 page)

“Are you kidding me? I am not talking to Brandon. I haven’t since I walked in on him with his penis
in some girl almost a year ago.”

“I know that now. I am so sorry that I blew up and didn’t talk to you. Please forgive me?” He says as he hugs me c
lose to his body with his hands. We are so close. I can’t think clearly when I am this close to him.

“Dance with me.”
He says, and waits until I nod before he leads me to the dance floor. The way he holds me is so very different than any other guy has held me. Our bodies melt into each other right away and he holds me as close to him as possible. Everything else fades into the distance as I lose myself in him yet again.

“So how did you figure out that you had misunderstood?” I ask him trying to fit together all of the pieces of the day.

“Luke set my ass straight at practice. After he told me that I fucked up, I lost my mind trying to reach you. We had practice tonight and I couldn’t stay focused to get through even one number without messing up. The rest of them had enough of me and called it an early night. So here I am.”

I place my hand on his cheek where I slapped him. “I am sorry that I slapped you. I should never have hit you.” He smiles at me. “I deserved it. It actually shocked me a little and left a sting for a while that made me think of you most of the day.”

“You thought of me? I didn’t think about you at all today.” I say, smirking and lying out my ass. “That is why Ivy had to drag me out of the house and pour shots down my throat all night. I was a mess.”

“If we are so miserable apart, maybe we should make it official and be together.”

“Are you asking me to be your gf?”

Does gf stand for good fuck?”

“Um…no
.” I say, and pinch his chest twisting to cause pain.

“Ouch! Shit. I am kidding. Eaven would you like to be my girlfriend?”

“Yes. I would love to be your girlfriend.” I say as my insides jump in excitement.

He leans in and
kisses me. We keep kissing until the song ends. I have no idea who is still here and who has gone home. He has had all of my attention.

“So who was your rodeo clown?”

“Really? Rodeo clown? That is mean. His name is Aiden. He was a complete gentleman who bought me a drink and danced with me before you arrived. I am positive he gets the picture that you and I are together now.”

“He had better.” He says as he looks up and glares at the table with some animalistic dominance in his eyes.

“Take a chill pill, alpha male. You have nothing to be worried about. I am yours, all yours. For as long as you will have me.”

Talon

She is so beautiful. I can’t keep my hands off of her as we dance.
I don’t want to leave the dance floor and deal with the two tables full of people. We do so well when we shut out everyone else in the world. If that two-bit cowboy so much as looks her way, I am going to lay his ass out. He will know that she is mine if he hasn’t figured it out already.

I love the feel of her against me. I want to keep her this close to me all night long.

“Come home with me.” I ask her hoping she will.

“I really shouldn’t.”

“You shouldn’t or you can’t?”

“I definitely shouldn’t, but
I guess I can.” I return her smile as she looks into my eyes.

“I just want to take things slow. I don’t want to rush into things. Today scared me and I think we need to take a step back and see what we have between us other than the sexual chemistry that is obvious.” She sa
ys softly. She is probably afraid that I won’t be ok with that.

“That sounds like a good idea. Just don’t shut me down completely. I enjoy our little make out sessions.”
I let my hands lower until they are cupping the globes of her ass.

“Why don’t you
come to my apartment this time? We can leave now.” She asks me.

“I thought you would never ask.”

“I have to get Ivy first.”

We head to the table and Ivy is sitting with Dylan. He parties with us every once in a while.
I don’t really know him that well, since I haven’t really been that social lately.

“Hey Ivy, we are heading out. Do you want to follow us?” Eaven interrupts Ivy and Dylan talking.

“No I will stay here for a little while and give you guys some privacy.” She says and winks up at us.

We make our way out to the truck and she jumps into the seat right next to mine. She is mine now. That makes me very happy. Once we arrive at her apartment, I notice that she seems
extremely tired. Alcohol has that effect on me too when I don’t drink enough to get completely plastered. “Let’s get you to bed.” I say with full intentions of going to bed to sleep.

She smiles at me and grumbles something. I
lay on the bed on top of the covers while she is in the bathroom. She comes out with a tiny little tank top and panties on. This is going to be difficult to manage. She lies down next to me and I guide her into my arms. Her back is against my chest and her hips are curved with mine. I shift back a little because I am growing hard with the friction and the warmth between us.

“Are we really together? Or am I dreaming?” She whispers.

“Oh baby, we are together. You made me so happy tonight. I am sorry I jumped to conclusions today. You didn’t deserve that. It’s just that with everything that happened to me before, I figured that you were too good to be true. Why would some idiot mess up a chance to be with you?”

“We both have past relationships that broke us in some way. We are going to have to work on trust.” She says as she turns her head to
look at me.

“You trust me until I give you a reason not to and I will do the same.” I say as I meet her mouth with mine. We kiss
deeply until I pull back and kiss her forehead. She turns away and we lay there quietly in each other’s arms.

Chapter Nine

Eaven

Life is great right now. If I am not hanging out with Ivy, then I am with Talon. He has been bending over backwards to make every day we are together special in some way. Our relationship has grown over the past three weeks. We are managing to keep up with all of our school work and enjoy college life at the same time. We have Finance class together on Tuesdays and Thursdays, so other than that we hang out after classes. Ivy and Dylan have seen each other at least once a week, but she just found out that he has to transfer to a new location with his job. She doesn’t seem too upset over it. She had always said that she didn’t want it to turn into anything exclusive.

Ivy and I have a photo shoot scheduled for a wedding this weekend back in Springfield. We make good money doing it and try to schedule at least one a month. Sometimes we will book some family sessions as well, but this weekend we are focusing only on the wedding. This wedding is expected to be very large. We have already taken pictures of the bride and groom separate to help shorten the time after the ceremony. I have invited Talon to come with me to meet my family.

“Are you nervous about meeting my parents?” I ask him on the way. He looks so handsome dressed up for the wedding.

“You should be since you have been banging their daughter. You know they will be able to tell.” Ivy is enjoying a little torture before we arrive.

“There is not any ‘banging’ going on.” I remind Ivy.

“I remember that one time you came home from a date and your dad was hiding in the tree in full army fatigues. He was watching through a scope and aiming his rifle at poor Johnny. That shit was crazy!”

“Stop teasing him. That did not happen…… in the past five years.” I say the last part quietly hoping he doesn’t catch that part. “He is very laid back and will not be aiming a rifle at you.” I notice Talon swallow hard and look at me out of the corner of his eye.

“He only did that because he knew about Jake, so he felt he might need to rescue me from being ravished in the car.”

“Did you just say ravished? And I thought his name was Johnny.” Talon questions me.

“Um, that is what Jake named his penis.” Ivy smiles and we both watch Talon get really nervous.

“Your dad has aimed a rifle with a scope at a guy
’s dick before and you think he is laid back? What is wrong with you? I can’t meet your parents. One look at me and he will probably call in his friends to help.” He begins to slow down the vehicle.

“What are you doing? They will love you! I want you to meet them and my little sister. Please?” I grab his leg and squeeze to reassure him.

“If I get my Johnson shot off, I am going to hold you responsible.” He says that like I am going to let that happen. Does he not realize I hope to love his Johnson just as much as he does?

We arrive at the wedding in enough time to prepare for the ceremony. I introduce Talon to my family and the introductions seem to be going smoothly. Ivy helps me keep the conversation goi
ng between my dad and Talon. My dad seems to be grilling him a little more than I expected him to about the band. We don’t bring up the fact that Talon should be a father.

“So you and your buddies make noise in the garage on weekends?”

“No sir. It’s not my buddies. It’s just my twin brother, my cousin, and your nephew Luke in the band.

“Dad, I told you that Luke’s band is really good. You should come out and listen to them sometime. You will be impressed.” I say
, trying to get my dad to quit staring at Talon with a critical look in his eyes.

Avery comes running in and jumps straight into my arms. “Hey pretty girl! I want you to meet someone. This is a really good friend of mine. His name is Talon.” She acts shy and lowers her head. Talon puts his finger under her chin and guides it up.

“Hey baby girl. Don’t be shy! I don’t bite!”

I see that the bride is ready for us to start taking photos, so I put Avery down.
I look to Talon trying to decide where to have him sit when I see him kneel down to talk to Avery.

“Hey, I am fine. You go to work.” He
sends me on my way. I can’t resist looking back periodically to see him with my family during the wedding. So far there doesn’t seem to be any major malfunctions, and I hope we can get through this day without any. My parents will learn to love whoever I fall in love with, but it would just make everything easier if they liked Talon from the start. I’m not saying that I am in love with him, but I can feel myself slipping in that direction.

After we finish taking pictures at the reception I start to look around for Talon. My mom sent me to the play room to find him. I stand in the door quietly and listen to Avery and Talon. They are both sitting in middle of the floor.

“But daaaaddd. You said I could play outside.” Avery is holding a doll facing a male doll that Talon is holding.

“I told you after you finish cleaning your room that we would walk to the park.” Talon is talking in a stern voice.

“Ooookay. Now let’s play pretty hair and makeup.” Avery stands so that she can reach his hair. She begins combing his hair with a small pink comb. “Now be still. It’s a pain to be beautiful.” Avery is obviously quoting my mom. She would always say that when she brushed out my long hair as a child. Every time I squirmed from the pain mom would remind me how painful beauty is. He is starting to look like a guy from the
‘50’s with his slicked comb back look he has going.

“Baby girl, you must be in a lot of pain then, because you are very b
eautiful.” He is always a boost to my self-confidence, and now he doesn’t miss the chance to help build little Avery up as well.

“There
! I will put a pretty bow in your hair to hold it back.” She is very proud of his new hair-do. I am definitely going to get a picture of this. I had better save him before she starts in on makeup, although I do wonder if he would let her paint his face.

“Hey smile for the camera!” I fully expect him to object and struggle to get away from the camera, but he doesn’t. He grabs Avery in a one armed hug and they pose for the picture.

“What are you guys doing in here?” I ask them, wondering how in the world he got suckered into playing.

“We were bored and we didn’t want to be quiet anymore.” Avery answers quickly.

“Ya, we were bored.” He says smiling.

“I’m sorry it took me so long. I tried to hurry.”

“Don’t be sorry. We were bonding. Hang on, baby girl.” Avery has her arms wrapped around his neck as he stands.

“Give me a piggy back ride!” He begins to walk to the door with her on his back.

“Don’t you want to fix your hair?” I know he has forgotten that he is sporting a large pink bow on the side of his head.

“It is fixed! Why
, are you embarrassed that yours isn’t pretty like mine?” He says smiling just as my mom walks in.

“There you are! Your dad is ready to leave. Come on Avery. Oh. Nice hair
, Talon.”

“Thank you
, ma’am.” My mom’s smile turned into a frown.

“Oh don’t call me ma’am. You only call elderly women that. I like to think I am young and that word reminds me that … well just don’t call me that, ok?”
