His Tempest (19 page)

“There's evil in the world, you know that. But we don't have to let it touch us.”

“We can't stop it.”

“No, we can't. But it can't stop us from living a good life. I love you, Noelle. No matter what goes on outside, we'll always be strong. Together. If you marry me.”

“What?”

Colin sighed. He hadn't meant to ask her like this. He was dressed in grungy clothes with the scent of fire and horse on him. This wasn't how he wanted to propose.

“I wanted to make it a special occasion,” he said. “With wine and roses. I wanted us all dressed up and…I know this isn't romantic.” He stroked the side of her face. “And I know how you love romance. But I love you, sweetheart. I want to marry you, to spend the rest of my life with you.”

Noelle screeched and hauled herself into his arms, linking her arms around his neck. “You're wrong. If this isn't romance, what is?”

“You're the expert,” Colin said, not about to argue.

“Yes. I'll marry you.”

“You've made my day, my week, my year.” He grabbed her and kissed her until her stomach growled. “Guess I'd better let you eat.”

“Guess you'd better,” she said. She'd set out the soup and sandwiches Leila had sent over and, sitting side by side, they ate at the island.

“When are your parents going back?”

“Sunday.” Greg had left already to return to school. “I'm glad Dad and George are getting along. I was worried in the beginning.”

“George has a way of winning people over. He and your dad smoked cigars and played poker all night. Leila's complaining as usual.”

“Yeah, Mom had a lot to say about that marathon poker night. It's going to be tough keeping Dad away now. But Mom doesn't complain too much.”

“George is planning to take him to some of the races.”

“Gregory, too. He actually called me last night to tell me George is taking him to a race during spring break. You have to understand that my brother doesn't call. I have to call him.”

Colin chuckled. “You know how guys are.”

“I expect you to be more considerate.”

“Yes, ma'am.” Colin ate for a moment. “Has the thought crossed your mind that there could be other children by Mackenzie?”

“At first, until Mom told me he wasn't a regular donor. He did this exclusively for Mom and Dad. So I'm it.”

“So.” He wrapped an arm around her waist, kissed her neck. “When do we get married? I don't like long engagements. And with your parents around, I won't be able to sneak over.”

“Hmm,” Noelle said, leaning into his kisses. “Weddings take time to plan.”

Colin moaned. “George put the party together in a couple weeks.”

“Weddings are different, trust me. It takes longer than that to find a gown.”

“I trust you, baby.” Suddenly a gleam came into his eyes. “Think we can have a little fun before your parents get back?”

She ran her hands across the bulge in his pants. “I'm game if you are.”
