“It’ll do,” Peter said, giving nothing away.

“So that guy, Chuck, won’t kill himself?”

Peter gave him a funny look.

“But I thought….” Brutus’s brow cleared. “Never mind. Well, do we need the bone-crunching and the wailers again today, or can I let them off?”

A scheduling board appeared. Peter examined it quickly. “Sorry, no. We have several more limbo candidates due to arrive in five minutes.”

“All right. Wailers still on. Got it. Hey, I’ve been meaning to ask…. Hell isn’t real, so what happens to these guys if they fail?”

Peter straightened his cuffs. “Oh, another thousand years or so of
slow
evolution. I was hired to speed the process up, and that’s precisely what I intend to do.”

“Oh.”

thundering voice echoed through the cosmos.

Brutus paled. “Uh…. I-i-is that…?”

“Gotta run,” said Peter.
