Worth Taking The Risk (4 page)

Little girl. Ouch, that hurt. “Apparently your brain doesn’t age because its still one of a six year old. Want it or not I’ll make you walk this weekend. I wont sit here getting a free check while you sit on your stool being ’creative’.” I made air quotes when I said ‘creative‘.

His green eyes turned to me sharply, looking a shade darker than before. Without a word he pulled himself out of the pool and grabbed his crutches, picked up his pants and walked back inside the house. Great. Wonderful day I’m having. With an exasperated sigh I got out of the pool and went to take a shower. Today I brought an extra change of clothes, it was a pair of basketball shorts and a light blue shirt. Swimming or just being inside the pool made me sleepy and that particular clothes was comfy. I walked upstairs and into the bathroom, took of all my wet clothes and placed them inside the plastic bag. Then slipped under the warm water. My muscles relaxed immediately. I grab the bottle of shampoo and washed my hair, I took my dear time while showering. Mitch is pissed, nothing out of the ordinary, so I might as well get time for myself.

After around thirty minutes I turned off the shower, when I got out of it and wrapped myself in a towel and noticed the mirrors were foggy. I ran my hand on top of it so I could see myself. A frown was printed in my face and I didn’t even notice I was doing it. Shaking my head I pulled on my underwear and when I was slipping on my shorts I heard a loud scream. Scared and worried I ran out of the bathroom and into Mitch’s room. He wasn’t in his bed or near the canvas, so I went inside the bathroom. There he was, wearing some pair of pants that weren’t buttoned, laying on the floor. His face was madly red, not from embarrassment even though there might be some of that, but from anger. I got on my knees and grabbed his arm, he tried to pull way but I held on firmly.

“Are you okay? Do you need a doctor? Something hurts?” I asked as I scanned his body, not in the I’m-checking-you-out-hot-guy way but the looking-for-injuries way. Even though I couldn’t help noticing that fine body of his, I had the urge to touch him so instead I concentrated on his face.

“I’m fine, let go of me.” he snapped. Yeah anger is much better.

“No. Come on let me get you up.” I got to my feet and pulled his arm, awkwardly he managed to step on his right foot and get up without falling. That meant he was leaning on me, full weight. “God you’re heavy! Where the hell are your crutches?”

“My bedroom.” he said in a tight voice. I could feel his eyes on me, I looked up and right indeed his eyes where on me or more likely my boobs.

“Stop staring at my chest!” I snapped and he looked up at me startled and blushing slightly. “Now why are your crutches in your bedroom?”

“Because I tried to walk. It worked until I got out of the shower and,” he cleared his throat. “I slipped on water.”

I bit my lower lip to not laugh, it’ll be mean. “Alright. Lets walk slowly ‘cause I might trip. Gosh for a thin person you’re so damned heavy!” And we did take it slow. One step at a time. His grip on my shoulder was killing me. Once in a while I would feel his eyes on me.

Finally we reached his bed and I gave him his crutches. “Don’t try to walk on your own, you’ll get hurt. Next time ask me for help or your parents.”

He nodded and stared at me openly. His gaze went from my bare feet all the way to my face, lingering in my chest. Pervert.

“Why are you shirtless?” he asked and moved his head to the side, wondering.

“Because I was taking a shower. You screamed and scared the be-Jesus out of me and I don’t want an injured soul to bear.”

He fought back a smile and looked at me annoyed. “Whatever. Get out. Next time wear a shirt!” he said as I closed the door behind me.

Mitch wasn’t the one to say thank you. He did warm me since the beginning.

Chapter 6

Tomorrow, somehow, I’m going to make Mitch walk. There’s this park near his home so we can walk to it, it’ll do him some good. Even though he’s a pain in my ass I’m been paid to help and take care of him. Some random song was playing on the radio and I turned it off, the sound was annoying me. I reached my house and turned off the engine. The living room light was on, I looked at the time its barely nine. My dad should be asleep by now. Frowning I got out of the car and opened the front door. There they were, Dad and Maggie. I smiled then scowled when I saw Chad seating comfortably on the couch.

“Hey darling, how was work today?” Maggie stood up and hugged me.

“It was the usual.” I shrugged and went to kiss my dad’s cheek.

“What do you mean the usual?” he asked a bit concerned.

“Usual silly fights with Mitch, then this unwanted visit got his temper to explode. To top it off he doesn’t want me inside his bathroom anymore.” I said without really thinking what I was saying.

“What were you doing in his bathroom?” Chad demanded but I ignored him, after what he did today no way I’m crossing a single word with him.

I walked to the kitchen and came back with a cup of water. My dad was frowning and Maggie was half smiling. “What?”

“Why were you in his bathroom?” Dad frowned.

“I was taking a shower after we got out of the pool. He yelled I ran out to his room, he had fallen because the idiot didn’t use his crutches. That’s about it.” I didn’t mention the lack of clothes on both sides.

“Oh.” was all dad said. And Chad shook his head, I shrugged again.

I took a sip of my water. “Are you dating him?” I choked and looked sharply at Maggie.

“What?!”

She smiled a little. “Are you dating Mitch Gaynor?”

I looked over at everyone, they all had the same expression. “You’ve got to be kidding me! Mitch and I together?” I laughed. “Oh dear lord, tell him that and he’ll shop your heads off. Seriously? I’ve been working with him for a week! When I start dating someone you’ll be the first to know.” I paused and chuckled again. “I’m going to sleep, tomorrow I’m dragging him to the park.” I kissed my dads cheek and he was giving me a full smile.

“I like to hear you laugh.” he squeezed my hand and then looked away.

Without anything to say I walked to my room and slipped on my pajamas. Mitch and I? that’s ridiculous. I would never date someone as infuriating as him. With that thought In my head I fell asleep.

--

I hurried downstairs. Oh god I’m going to be late! Why didn’t I heard the alarm?! Maggie eyed me curiously as I went to the fridge and graved an orange.

“Why are you all flushed?” Maggie asked.

“I’m going to be late! God Emma is going to kill me, Mitch will be furious and Richard will be shaking his head!” I ran to the door. “Bye dad!”

It was a miracle I didn’t get a thicket on my way to the Gaynor’s mansion. When I got there Emma and Richard were getting out of the front door. I ran out and gasped for air, please don’t fire me! Please! “I’m sorry I’m late!”

Emma frowned. “Late? We called and told your father that you could come at nine.” she looked at her watch. “In fact you’re just in time.”

“We wont be here until twelve. Can you stay that long?” Richard asked.

“Midnight?” I felt my eyes widen.

“Is there a problem with that?” Richard lifted an eyebrow.

“No, its fine. I’ll just call home, have a good time.” I smiled and waved as they left. Oh god. I headed to the kitchen and grabbed the phone that was there. I dialed up my home’s phone.

“Hello?” dad’s voice sounded sleepy.

“Did I woke you up?”

“Keller? No. something wrong?”

“Just calling to tell you I wont be home until midnight. The Gaynor’s have some event and I need to stay longer. Don’t wait for me.”

“Midnight?! You wont be staying alone with a boy older than you that late, young lady!” my dad scolded.

“Dad its not like I’ve never-” I stopped myself just in time. No way I was going to remember my dad about my sex life before I went to a psycho, he might get a heart attack. “What I mean is that nothing will happen. The guy hates me.”

“Keller before-” shit.

“Dad, I’m sorry I ever did that but I swear it wont happen again.” I felt like the worst person on earth.

“Promise nothing will happen.” he demanded.

“Ed Adzharia I, Keller, your sweet and lovely daughter, promise you that nothing will happen between Mitch Gaynor and I. did I miss something?”

Dad laughed. “No need to be mean, Keller. But that’s fine.”

“Don’t stay up okay? Or I’ll call Maggie.” I warned.

“Fine. Be careful.”

“Yeah, yeah. I’m not fourteen anymore. Bye.” I hung up and chuckled. For once my dad was worrying again for me instead of keeping closed up and thinking about the past. “Why did you have to leave mom?”

As I turned around I had to grip the chair next to me in order not to fall flat on my face. Mitch was standing there leaning against the door, smirking. Holly damn, how much did he heard?

“What do you want for breakfast?” I asked a bit nervous.

Mitch kept smirking. “Omelets.”

I nodded and began to cook. I straightened up and stood very still. Mitch was pressing against me, I’m trapped between the stove and his body. I felt his hand on my waist. “What are you doing?” I frowned.

“I don’t know what you’re talking about.” he mumbled against my ear.

“Mitch move, I’m cooking.” my temper was rising.

“Don’t think so.” he bit my earlobe. “This is fun.”

“Don’t make me hurt you.”

Mitch chuckled and began to nibble my neck. That did it, I elbowed him and turned around. It was mean of me because that caught him of guard and he nearly stumbled backwards. I grabbed his arm to steady him, took the crutch and gave it to him. He was smiling.

“Don’t you dare touch me again, you hear that Gaynor?” I grabbed a plate and set it on the table.

“You did promise to that Ed you wouldn’t do anything with me.” he smirked and sat down. “Can I have some juice?”

I grabbed some from the fridge and filled a cup. “Here. And that Ed is my father, don’t make fun of him. Got it?”

His eyes hardened. “Whatever.” he paused. “No boyfriend trouble today?”

I glared at him, but it didn’t seem to bother Mitch at all. “He’s not my boyfriend. don’t bring it up again.” I snapped.

“Oh? And I’m the one with the temper.”

“I like you better when you’re slamming doors on my face and been a total ass.” I hissed and took a bite of my food.

“Too bad, I feel like bothering you today. See how long you last. The other nurse left a week later. None of them last.” Mitch smirked and took another bite.

“They must really hate you by now. Too bad, I need the money so you’ll be seeing me for at least a year. Get used to that, Mitch.”

“We’ll see about that.” he took a sip from his juice, eyes smiling.

“When you’re done, go change into something more suitable. We’re going walking today.” I said and started washing the plate. Three weeks and this house will be full of maids and I’m sure I’ll hate that.

“I’m not.”

“We are.”

“You cant make me.” he snapped. I turned to him slowly.

“You aren’t scared are you?” I smirked when I hit home.

“Of course not. I’ll be ready in an hour Keller.” he grabbed his crutches and left the kitchen. Faintly I could hear the metal hitting the floor of the stairs.

It’s going to be a really long year.

Chapter 7

It’s been two hours already and Mitch hasn’t come out of his room since breakfast. But I’m not giving up that easily. I stomped my way up to his room, didn’t bother to knock and stormed inside his room. There he was, sitting on his stool, painting. He looked up at me, angry.

“What do you think you’re doing?” Mitch snapped.

“No. What do
you
think you’re doing? I told you we’ll go walk and we are.”

“No.”

“Mitch don’t make me drag you down stairs.” I warned.

His eyes hardened and he stood up, no crutches, at least he had some sort of balance. Balance that was lost when he tried to come close to me fast. Good reflexes from my part made the fall a little bit less painful on his side. Mitch landed on me. His eyes widened. “Are you alright?” I swear I saw panic in his eyes.

“I’m fine. You okay? Does your leg hurt?” I wanted to look away from those penetrating eyes but it seemed impossible, he held me captive.

“No, I think its fine.”

After a few seconds I cleared my throat. “Wait let me help you up.” somehow I got from under him and up. Once I was steady enough I pulled him up and made him lean on me until we reached his stool. He sat and grabbed his crutches.

“Let’s go before I change my mind.” he said coldly and headed for the door.

Now that’s the Mitch I’m used to.
