War of Alien Aggression 5 Cozen's War (19 page)

She placed one demi-ovoid from the suite of counter-surveillance devices on every bulkhead and activated them. It would defeat most known surveillance technologies. It would have been safer in Cozen's shielded cage, his 'skiff', but
Hardway's
old command tower had been cut away for replacement and Cozen's paranoia cage was gone.

Dana poured herself a drink and watched the surface go opaque as she brought it close to one of the devices. "They're working," she said. "How did it go back down on Earth? Getting debriefed by the Staas Company Board of Directors, I mean."

"Alright, I suppose.""

"What the hell did you tell them?"

"I blamed Harry Cozen," he said. "The Board of Directors liked that. It affirmed the statement they released for the benefit of the shareholders and the UN saying exactly the same thing."

"And the rest of it?"

"I didn't leave anything out. I told them the truth of what happened in its entirety. I told them how the emissary Thrall killed Harry Cozen and how it said the Ortani Imperium would now be coming to take revenge on Humanity for destroying the Squidies."

Her head canted a few degrees as if she was confused. "But I was there and..." Dana turned and looked up at him then. He knew what she was about to say.
She was about to say it was all a lie.
Ram Devlin pulled her to him and kissed her long and deep before she could speak the truth.
