TheWolfInside (8 page)

One hand
trailed around to her ass while the other lifted her skirt. She pressed her
thighs together, but his hands were so strong. Then a blunt finger traced her
clit, still covered by her panties, and Eva moaned.

“Ewan,
stop,” she begged and struggled to free herself, but he didn’t relent. And
every time she moved his finger flitted over her sensitive flesh, wetting her
further.

“But you’re
enjoying it, aren’t you?” he breathed into her neck.

Then his
lips pressed to hers and the whole world seemed to catch fire and burn with the
passion that arose from his kiss. She groaned, and his digit pushed aside her
panties and explored her depths, slipping into her cunt with a suddenness that
took her breath away.

Her walls
pulsed around him, and his tongue pressed inside her mouth. She couldn’t fight
him off any longer, werewolf or not. His entire being seemed to wrap her in
desire, and she couldn’t pull free.

He pulled
back from the kiss and smiled, his sharp teeth glinting. Then Ewan fell to his
knees.

“What are
you doing?” she gasped as he yanked down her soaked panties.

“I need to
taste you, Evangeline. I’ve dreamt of it for so long.”

Her mind fogged,
but she couldn’t form a question as his hands spread her legs and his tongue
explored her clit. Every taste tickled the passion burning in her bones, and
she moaned and writhed. She dug her fingers into his hair. The coolness of the
wall on her back was the only thing that kept her braced in reality.

She was in
Paris and a werewolf, a gorgeous werewolf, was pleasuring her in ways most men
didn’t. Anyone could walk by and find them. Anyone could see them. Paris might
be the city of love, but this was ridiculous.

He felt
the fat on her thighs
,
she thought, but there wasn’t anything Eva could do about that now.

Ewan groaned
and his hot tongue flicked and tasted her with an urgency she’d never known.
His hands dug into her hips, like he was trying to pull her closer.

The little
ball of pleasure exploded across her body with one final lick. She moaned, and
took gasping breaths. Her legs felt weak, like they might give out at any
moment, and she stared at Ewan as he climbed back to his feet and wrapped his
powerful arms around her.

Her whole
body twitched with the orgasm.

His cock
stood fully erect.

“You look
tired,” he mused with a smirk. “Let’s get you home, lass.”

Eva nodded.

* * *

She sat up
in bed the next morning with a start. The dim gray outline of the window lit up
behind the curtains, and Ewan stood in front of the kitchenette. Something
sizzled on the stove, and the scent of coffee and fresh bread filled the air.

The night
before seemed like some kind of dream. Was she really chased by werewolves? Had
her tour guide really killed three men then pleasured her in an alley?

“Morning,
lass,” Ewan said and smiled.

Boxers hung
off his hips, and the outline of his bulge was apparent beneath them. He held a
spatula in his hand. She noticed the table was set for two, with a little vase
of flowers in the middle.

He was
totally clean, and so was she. She remembered showering the night before and
going straight to sleep, once again wrapped in Ewan’s strong arms.

“Sleep
well?” he asked.

Eva nodded
and went to the bathroom. She splashed cold water on her face and slapped
herself in the cheeks. Maybe it was all some strange dream brought on by
exhaustion. She’d been working herself to the bone before she flew to Paris,
and she hadn’t really relaxed since she got here. But the events of the night
before became clearer the more she focused on them.

Ewan was a
werewolf.

And he saved
her.

Why?

He knocked
on the door, and she jumped.

“Breakfast
is ready,” he said.

Eva looked
at her reflection. She looked better rested than usual. The bags below her eyes
were almost gone, but her dark hair was a mess. She ran her fingers though it
and braided it quickly before stepping out to meet him.

Ewan sat at
the table, digging into his food.

She crossed
her arms and glanced at the door. That was her only escape if he attacked her.
Hopefully this neighborhood was livelier during the day than it was at night.
If he wasn’t going to say anything about what happened, she would.

“You’re a
werewolf,” she said.

He raised an
eyebrow and shrugged. “You caught me. I am a werewolf. Are you going to sit
down and eat?”

Eva shook
her head. Hearing him say it was the final blow. “How can I sit down and eat
with a werewolf?”

“You didn’t
seem to have a problem with it yesterday or the day before that. Come along.
Before it gets cold. I’m not going to bite,” he said with a smirk.

Her stomach
rumbled, and the food did smell good. Plus, he hadn’t hurt her, quite the
opposite. She sat and took a slow bite of eggs.

He watched
her intently. “Do you like it, Evangeline?”

She nodded
and took a long sip of coffee. She needed it for this conversation. “Well. Are
you going to explain yourself?”

“Explain
what?” he asked as he crunched on bacon.

“Why are you
a werewolf? Why did you protect me? What’s going on?” she said around each bite
of food. Whatever his downfalls, Ewan was a good cook.

He smiled.
“I was turned into a werewolf at sixteen. It’s a long story. I protected you
because I wanted to – no, I need to. And what do you mean by ‘what’s going
on?’”

He needed to
protect her? She flushed and took a piece of bread. Butter dripped from it, but
she didn’t care at the moment. “Why did those men attack us? Why did you kill
them?”

Ewan sighed.
“They were after you, lass, not us. They smelled that divine scent of yours and
couldn’t help themselves. They wanted to mate with you. I killed them because
it’s the only way to stop a wolf once he has his heart set on something. Do you
wish I hadn’t?”

Eva didn’t
know what to say. If those men were just going to keep attacking her, she
didn’t want that. But to wish them dead. “Were they criminals? Bad ones?”

Ewan nodded,
his face somber. “Yes. They were the type that drowned kittens and burned down
orphanages. And they were going to rape you. Is that bad enough?”

She scowled
at him. He wasn’t serious about the kittens and orphans, but those men did
attack her. “Fine. I don’t hold it against you.”

“How kind of
you,” he said with a nod of his head.

Eva didn’t
say anything about the rest of the night. His body pinning her to the wall, or
his mouth pleasuring her in ways she’d never dreamed. He felt her fat thighs
and stomach by now. Why wasn’t he disgusted and pushing her aside? What more
could he possibly want?

Then
something he’d said earlier sparked in her mind. She chewed the rest of her
breakfast without tasting it. Those men wanted to mate with her? Did that mean

“Does mate
mean what I think it means? They wanted to get me pregnant with werewolf
puppies? Why?”

Ewan smiled
and his eyes glowed. “Because you’re a very special woman, Eva. You’re the kind
of woman wolves need to mate with, and you’re so very rare. We can smell it on
you right off, and it’s absolutely wonderful.”

She flushed
and pushed aside her plate. “So more werewolves are going to attack me? More
are going to want to mate with me?”

A shadow
seemed to fall over Ewan’s face, and he nodded. “Yes. More will come. More
always come, but that’s what I’m for. I’m here to protect you from them,
Evangeline.”

She didn’t
ask the next question that pricked on the tip of her tongue. Did Ewan want to
mate with her? He was a werewolf and he noticed her scent, whatever it was, but
that didn’t mean he wanted her the way the ones he’d killed had.

“How come
this never happened back in New York?” she asked instead.

Ewan smiled.
“Maybe there aren’t any wolves in that big city. Or maybe someone was
protecting you on the other side of the pond.”

She rolled
her eyes. None of the men she dated wanted to protect her. They weren’t the
type. “I think I’d have noticed. No one in New York is anything like you.”

He finished
the last piece of bacon and changed the subject. “How about the Eiffel Tower
today, lass? Or would you prefer the
Louver
?”

“Now you ask
me what I want to do? Will you actually listen to me?”

“That
depends on if it’s safe or not,” he said and gathered the dishes.

Eva huffed.
“This neighborhood is safe? There wasn’t anyone around last night.”

He set the
dishes down with a clink and turned around. His chest heaved like he was
breathless. “If there were people around I couldn’t protect you like I need to.
That’s why you
can’t
stay in the Hyatt. But you
can
choose where
you’d like to go today.”

Her cheeks
flushed. A werewolf running around an upscale hotel was bound to bring
attention to itself, she realized. “The Eiffel Tower then.”

Ewan nodded.

After they
dressed, he took her to Paris’s most famous landmark. It wasn’t as tall as she
expected, but Eva didn’t say so. He might call her ungrateful for it. They rode
the elevator to the top, and she took a sharp breath. The cold air stung her
lungs, and Ewan’s powerful arms embraced her from behind.

She
stiffened in his hold.

“It’s
beautiful, isn’t it,” he whispered and his breath brushed her ear. Shivers of
lust ran through her body at his touch.

Paris spread
out before them. The fall air made everything seem sharp and clear. Even with
the gray sky above, the city looked perfect.

She sighed.
“Yes. It is.”

They stood
like that for a long time, and Ewan’s fingers dug into her skin, even though
she sucked in her stomach as best she could. Why did he insist upon holding her
like that? His hot breath blew her hair, and she relaxed into his warm grip.

After what
seemed like hours, he let go and snapped a picture of her.

“Beautiful,”
he muttered and licked his lips.

Eva shook
her head. “You don’t have to humor me just because. . . .”

He raised an
eyebrow. “Because what?”

“Because
you're my tour guide. And a werewolf,” she whispered the last part.

He smiled.
“I’m not humoring you, lass. Not at all. And it has very little to do with my
animal side.”

Very
little didn’t mean nothing
,
she thought and walked toward the elevator. When they got back to the ground,
he took her to a little café for an early dinner. She drank more wine and ate
more delicious food that would just end up on her hips, but arguing with Ewan
didn’t seem to help. Plus, France didn’t have any low-fat menus.

How were all
the Parisian women so slim? Eva wondered as her phone rang. She glanced at her
cell. The tour agency were finally getting back to her. They certainly took
their damn time! She answered.

“Ms. Barns?”
a woman said.

Ewan raised
an eyebrow.

“Yes,” Eva
said. “I called you over a day ago.”

“We’re very
sorry for the delay, but we had word you cancelled your trip.”

The blood
rushed from her cheeks. “What? I did no such thing. I’m in Paris right now!”

The woman on
the other end sighed. “Yes, about that. We don’t have a Ewan McLane working for
us. If he said he’s your tour guide, he’s lying. You should contact the French
police right away. I can contact them for you if you’d like--”

Ewan took
the phone from her hands and clicked ‘end.’ “That’s enough of that. I hoped you
wouldn’t be nosy, lass, but I should’ve known.”

Eva stared
at him. Her hands shook, and her eyes widened. How did he know her name? How
did he know when she was coming into the city? If Ewan wasn’t one of the tour
guides, who happened to be a werewolf, who was he?

“Get away
from me,” she said and stood up.

The patrons
at the café glanced at her like she was crazy.

Ewan smiled.
“Calm down and we can talk about this. I need to explain something to you.
Please, Evangeline. It’s important.”

At the
moment, she didn’t care what he had to say. Almost everything he told her was a
lie. She shook her head. “Don’t you have to pay for our food?”

As Ewan
reached for his wallet, she ran. He still had her phone, but she couldn’t do
anything about that. She surged with the people of the streets, ducking between
the crowd, and held out her hand for a taxi. To her relief, one stopped and she
jumped inside and slammed the door.
