Authors: Carrie Brown
The passages of Lewis and Clark's journals quoted here are taken from
The Journals of Lewis and Clark
edited by Bernard DeVoto, Houghton Mifflin Company, 1953. This edition is based on the
Original Journals of the Lewis and Clark Expedition
edited by Reuben Gold Thwaites in 1904—5. The version of the story I imagined Alice reading aloud to Kenneth Fitzgerald and Theo would likely contain more narrative and fewer of the actual journal entries themselves, whose archaic and erratic spellings, while perfectly consistent with an account being composed in the wilderness with neither typewriter nor editor, can make for rather difficult reading.
