George du Maurier, whose novel
Peter Ibbetson
so excited J. M. Barrie that he called his dog after Peter’s dog and his most famous character after Peter.

Mary Ansell, who gave up a promising career in the theatre to become Barrie’s wife.

J. M. Barrie at the time he started frequenting the Kensington Gardens.

Nanny – Mary Hodgson – at first resisted Barrie’s involvement with the boys and was lampooned for it as Irene in
The Little White Bird.

One of Barrie’s earliest photographs of the boys – this is Peter being dried and dressed by Sylvia at Rustington-on-Sea in 1899, the summer before Michael was born.

Michael at Black Lake Cottage, waving his foot for luck as his brothers set off with bow and arrow to shoot his dinner for him.

The Boy Castaways of Black Lake Island.

Happy and carefree, they mostly went naked ‘that strange and terrible summer’.

Michael was only two when he, his mother Sylvia and Barrie began taking holidays without Arthur.

In 1904, Arthur moved the family out of London, distancing Michael (foreground) and his brothers from Barrie.

Sylvia and Michael in 1905.

This was Barrie’s favourite shot of Michael at age five.

Michael, suitably costumed by Barrie, playing Romeo to Sylvia’s Juliet at the hotel in Dives, France, where they holidayed in 1905.
