The Hidden Mistress - An Erotica and Romance Paranormal/Historical Novelette (8 page)

Marie shivered, and to her amazement, it was both in fear and excitement. “How could you?” she demanded, desperately trying to get back in control of herself again.

The vampire looked thoughtful. “Spur of the moment?” she asked, as if unsure why she had seduced Marie. “And there was also a matter of you barging into my bathroom. I would say you brought this upon yourself.”

“You could have told me to go away,” Marie said. Just as they had done before that night, her gaze kept sliding down the baroness’s body.

“Oh, be quiet.” The vampire rolled her eyes. “The effect you have on women is almost cruel. Is that not so, dear Sophie?”

At the mention of her name, Sophie moved to the vampire’s side, walking hesitantly as if approaching a dangerous beast. “Yes, mistress,” Sophie said in a hushed voice.

“Exactly.” The vampire sighed and looked faintly irritated. “I could see Sophie was attracted to you,” the baroness said to Marie. “Her...
infatuation
was on full display at the dinner table. As she forgot her manners, I had to remind her. Which I did, just before you gallivanted into my room waving that nasty sword.”

Next to the baroness, Sophie blinked slowly and shivered, but her expression was no longer scared. Instead, she looked shy and pleased. Sophie and Marie’s eyes met, and Sophie smiled coyly at Marie.

“Remind Sophie of what?” Marie asked, more and more confused with every moment that passed.

“Of her place,” the vampire said curtly. “Which is by my side.”

The vampire slowly reached out a hand to Sophie, who kneeled and held the baroness’s fingers to her mouth. Still watching Marie, Sophie parted her lips, took one of the baroness’s fingers in her mouth, and sucked gently at the vampire’s fingertip. Sophie closed her eyes in pleasure, and the baroness smiled again at Marie.

“Besides,” the vampire continued, “I knew you would be an easy prey.”

Marie felt her face turn bright crimson. “I do not know what you are talking about. I have never been with another – ”

“Have you forgotten what you told me?”

“But that was – I was under your spell,” Marie protested, knowing that her argument was weaker than a dry leaf in a furnace.

“Dear me!” The vampire laughed again. “I’ve known for a long, long time, sweetheart.” She leaned closer and fixed Marie with her gaze. “You may have kept your tastes hidden from your social circles,” she said quietly, “but I have eyes everywhere.
Everywhere.

Marie felt giddy. Not only was she trapped; the vampire knew her most guarded secret, too. The baroness had the power to demolish her life at a whim. “Impossible,” she whispered to herself.

“And as you guess,” the vampire went on, “I have the opportunity to spread the word about the people you take to bed. But that,” she added with a wink, “would be a petty thing to do.”

“You wouldn’t dare,” Marie said weakly, knowing that if the vampire asked her to, she would tell her parents herself.

The vampire slipped her finger out of Sophie’s mouth and caressed Sophie’s cheek, and the woman sighed with pleasure. “I have walked this earth for centuries,” the baroness said and looked at Marie. “I have seduced queens, ruined kings, and carved my way across battlefields. Exposing you would mean nothing.”

Tilting her head, the baroness turned to Sophie. “Take off your dress. I think I’ll have you both this time. All this bickering has left me hungry.”

“You cannot tell me what to do.” Sweat ran freely down Marie’s face; the effort to keep from touching the vampire was becoming too much. Even Marie’s imagination was betraying her: Fantasies and visions flashed inside her head, and all of them included the naked, irresistible and lethal creature in front of her.
If only I could lay my hand on her,
Marie thought
. Maybe let my fingers – no, I can’t! I must not!

“Oh, but I can.” The baroness’s grin was wolf-like. “You may have come as a guest, but you stay as my doll.”

“No.”

“From now on, you will come when I call, and you will please me as I wish.”

“No.” Marie was shaking her head furiously.

“If you do well, I may return the favour.”

“Never,” Marie breathed.

The vampire smiled in approval. “You are a spirited woman,” she said. “That speaks of a fire inside. Such warmth is welcome in my home.” The vampire’s smile grew wider. “I often find the nights too long and cold.”

“I will
not
return.” Marie had to force the words out. “I take order from no one but the king!”

“You wish a demonstration?” The vampire arched an eyebrow. “Very well.”

“I would never – ”

The vampire did not move. There was no grand gesture or loud order. Marie saw no trace of magic, witchcraft or flamboyant incantations. All the baroness needed were two words. They were even spoken quietly and casually, with the authority of some who simply could not be disobeyed.

Glancing at Marie and reaching for her wine, the vampire said, “Please me.”

Marie stood no chance. Knowing that she could be near the vampire again disintegrated her last determination like dust before a strong wind. Now she had the chance to feel the vampire’s skin against her own again, perhaps even taste the baroness’s lips. She would die for a kiss. She would, she knew, even murder. She would do anything.

The insight surprised her, but it also hammered home what she already had started to understand: she was absolutely and irreversibly lost.

The vampire was right; from now on, Marie belonged to her. It would be terrifying, or it could be ecstasy. Most likely, it would be both.

Shivering with both fear and lust, Marie moved forward.
