“He was sick,” Billy’s father said. “There was nothing you could have done.”

I took the seat that Frank offered and sat down next to Karen. She put a hand on my knee, and I wrapped my fingers around hers as Billy’s mother turned the pages of her photo album and we watched her little boy grow into the young man we all wished we’d known a little better.
