The Devil Within (Devil Series Book 3) (13 page)

“I just didn’t realize how much being a part of Copeland meant to you. I know you enjoy working there but I thought it was more because of the perks.”

“This has nothing to do with money.” He took her hand and laid it in his lap. “I grew up being nothing. It wasn’t until Grant gave me a shot that anyone ever paid attention to me in this town.” He caressed her fingers. “Nothing would mean more to me than showing everyone what I’m made of. I can run that company, Lexi. I just need the chance.”

“You know I hate anything connected to Grant, but I know this means a lot to you.” She kissed him. “I’ll support you. Besides, you’ll run that company with more morality and compassion than Grant ever could.”

“I love you, Lexi.” He kissed her hand. “I think I always will.”

Her heart fluttered.

“I’d better get a move on.” He stood and grabbed his watch from the end table. “If I keep looking at you in that sheet I might never leave.”

She sat up on her knees. “That would be fine with me.” She pulled him to her and kissed him.

“Lexi,” he mumbled against her lips. “I have to go, honey.”

“Aw.” She let him go.

He moved from the bed.

“You’ll do well tomorrow.” She lay against the headboard. “I’m proud of you already.”

He smiled and turned toward the window. “What the…” He moved the curtain back. “Son of a…” Kevin ran out of the room and down the hall.

“What?” Alexis got off the bed, wrestling with the sheet. “Kevin?” She ran to the living room, tripping along the way.

“Hey!” He yanked the front door open and jumped on the porch. “What do you want?” he yelled with his arm raised.

Alexis peeked outside the door.

A gray Camry sat on the street.

“Hey!” Kevin headed off the porch.

“No!” Alexis grabbed him. “You don’t know anything about that man. He might have a gun or something.”

“I don’t give a damn.” Kevin shoved her back and ran down the porch steps. “Hey!”

“Kevin!” Alexis hung out the door.

The Camry sped off.

Alexis waved, holding the sheet. “See if you can get his license plate number!”

Kevin ran into the sandy street. “Shit, he’s gone.” He huffed. “I couldn’t see the number.”

“That was the same guy?” Alexis laid her hand on the door.

“Yes!” Kevin marched up the steps. “Lexi, what the hell is going on?”

She patted his arm. “It will be okay.”

I hope.

“No, I want to know who that man is and why he’s following me!” He ran his fingers through his hair. “
Why?

“We’ll find out.” She straightened the sheet. “I promise you that.”
