The Broken Parts Of Us (22 page)

“Okay,” she agrees.

I end the call. “You need to go stay with her until I can get there.”

“On my way.”

Hans meets me outside as I get to the hospital.

“It’s not him.” Those are his first words as he approaches me. “He was approached in a bar. This guy fitting the same description as the suspects bought him drinks all day, then handed him the keys to his car.”

A flush of ice cold dread washes through my veins. “I need you to run everything on Evan again.”

“Sure thing.”

I call Sammy to warn him to stick close with River, and I spend the day chasing dead ends. I’m left frustrated, angry. Why hadn’t he struck when we believed the suspect was caught
? Because it’s personal and he wants me to feel this, the anxiety, anticipating his next move.

I pack up and make my way to Kyra’s

I
t was hard being around Jasper; his whole personality cloaked the air and I was drowning in him when he took Hannah’s call and agreed on a date for their wedding. Time ceased to exist. It stopped with my heart.  Three weeks from now he’ll be married. I need to squash the feelings that have blossomed and expanded with rapid growth.

“Derek’s outside, Ky. I need to go sort some things with Hannah. I can come back later if you want?”

“No, do your thing. We’ll be fine.”

He smiles and kisses me, leaving a burning crater in its wake traveling from the kiss to every part of me.  My nerves eat away at me while I wait for Derek to appear. When he does, he looks tired and miserable.

“Why didn’t you tell me about these notes?” He holds up the one I had given to Jasper earlier. I drop my head.

“I’m sorry, I just thought it was my ex being a douche. I didn’t want to ruin your thing with Jasp, you seemed happy and…”

He stops me, putting a hand over my mouth. The look he’s giving me is of awe. “You saw us.”

I fight the blush, but it ignites my skin. I walk away from him into my room, embarrassed to admit I had watched them. He follows me.

“You saw us,” he repeats.

“Yes, but Derek, he is going to marry her. Neither of us can keep him. He set the date. Three weeks from now, he’ll marry her.”

“I know I can’t keep him. I said goodbye to him last night. It’s over.”

I look up at him and see the painful truth. I know how he feels. I can’t have Jasper and a part of me will mourn that, but the part that has fallen for Derek just wants him to make me his.

“I want to move forward. I want to be something more. I want
us
to be more. I’ve never felt this way before. I have to be with you. Own me, Derek, make me yours.”

I suck air into my lungs, trying to feel what I just released in my confession.

I slip the straps from my shoulders and my dress puddles at my feet, leaving me bare to his warm gaze. My ragged breaths lift my breasts with each intake.

“You are mine, Kyra. We own each other now.”

He steps closer to me, his breath blowing over my hair, his big hands stroking down my arms. “You’re exquisite,
my beauty
, so perfect.”

His lips press to my neck, whispering across the sensitive skin there. “Lay on the bed.”

I comply, lying down across the satin sheet. He pulls the knot from his tie, slipping it from him. His belt follows; the clunk makes my body jerk with anticipation as it hits the floor. I watch as he slowly unbuttons his shirt, his eyes never leaving me. I’m so nervous, but also so ready to experience this, and after Jasper told me that he’ll be marrying Hannah, I realised I could have wasted myself by giving myself to him. Yet here stood Derek in all his manly perfection looking down at me like I’m the only women he has ever desired. His lust-filled gaze has my heart beating wildly in my chest; lightning bugs have taken flight in my stomach, making my skin hum with sensitivity.

His shirt falls away and he steps closer, his knees skimming the bed. His hands rest on my knees, and he gently pulls them apart. My hot, wet need for him evidently on display for his greedy eyes. “You are so divine.”

My teeth bite down hard down on my lip as I watch him remove his trousers. “Oh God,” I breathe before I can stop myself. His huge erection, smooth and glistening on the tip, stands heavy up his stomach.

I gulp down the nerves and watch in fascination as he gets to his knees, wraps his arms around my calves and pulls me down the bed. His hot breath kisses my dampened lips before I feel his warm tongue swipe out. My head falls back as little shocks of pleasure sing through my body.

“Mmmm, you taste pure. Fucking divine, Beauty.”

His mouth devours me—sucking, licking, kissing. I feel like I could take flight on the high I’m feeling. I’ve never felt anything this cathartic in my twenty-three years. My muscles tense, and an explosion of pleasure erupts inside me.

“God, Beauty, that’s it.  Let go.”

“Oh, God Derek! Oh, God.” The stars finally clear from my eyes and Derek’s intense gaze replaces it, his heavy frame resting over me. I feel the brush of his cock and a whimper escapes my mouth.

“You sure about this, Beauty? I can wait.”

“No, I want you. I’m yours. Claim me, Derek.”

The primal growl that leaves him makes me shiver. I’ve never felt more wanted. I feel the pressure as he pushes his cock inside me; it’s surreal and wonderful all at once. The sting of him taking my virginity lasts only seconds before the fullness makes my body take flight. Every gentle stroke of his cock heightens me to new pleasures; the power of his body thrusting into mine makes me want to weep. He is so strong and beautiful; my lips feather kisses over his chest, up his neck until I claim his mouth with mine, his tongue dancing with mine as he continues to thrust into me. My body trembles and tightens as my orgasm takes control of my body, squeezing Derek’s release from him.

He collapses over me, rolling to the side and pulling me into his chest.  “You’re mine now, Kyra.”

And I am.

I
t was different waking up to the sweet scent of Kyra instead of the earthy tones of Jasper. Her hair fans across my chest, her breasts pushing into my torso. She is a goddess and I have her in my arms. There’s no way I’m letting her go.

I know I have to face Jasper, and I locked all those feelings away. I owe it to Kyra to give her all of me and I want to for the first time in my life. I want to give myself to a woman.

The worry over Evan is like a dark shadow hovering over me, though. I need to find him. Jasper mentioned Dawn putting the note on the car. I had to start somewhere.

I gently slip from underneath her, hurrying to get dressed. I call Hans and tell him to send a patrol car over here to stake the place while I’m out.

“Where are you going?” Her sleep infused voice filters through the air as her sleepy form stretches out.

“I need to follow up on a lead. I have an officer outside.”

She sits up. The covers bunched at her waist exposing her upper body. My cock stiffens at the beauty on display. “That’s not needed, Der. He hasn’t done anything other than send the notes.”

“That’s all it was before he attacked and assaulted the other girls, too. This is personal and I’ll be damned if I don’t take every precaution to keep you from harm. Pack a bag, you’re moving in with me.”

Her jaw drops. “I just moved in here.”

“Kyra, pack a bag. You’re mine now, which means you belong with me.”

A smile plays on her lips. “Okay.”

“Good.”

I
agreed on a date. It’s set. No Kyra, no Derek, just Hannah and our kid. Life has really played a sick joke on me; the tide is coming in fast and I can’t swim. Everything Derek told me last night, not waking up to him or having him love me, uncoiled the feeling I was trying to deny from him and myself. I’m in love with him; I crave him and want to be in his breathing space all the time. Instead, I’m standing in Hannah’s apartment. Why can’t she be Kyra? For Kyra, I could have put aside all the things I feel for Derek. I could have just had her, she would be enough.

“Here.”

I take what she offers, looking at the black and white image. I’ve seen these before with River; it’s a scan picture.

“When did you have this done?”

“Yesterday. My mom came with me.”

“Why the fuck didn’t you ask me to come?”

“Because you were doing stuff with that family of yours that you don’t want me to be a part of.”

“That’s bullshit, Hannah, and you know it.”

She cocks her overplucked eyebrow, and dammit, the bitch is right.

“Fine. Well, River is cooking tonight, so come for dinner,” I challenge her. She can say I don’t want her to be a part of them all she liked; the truth is, she doesn’t want to mix with them and hates how close we all are.

“Fine, I will.”

“Good. See you tonight.”

Derek didn’t come home last night. I knew he was worried and staying with Kyra, but he hadn’t replied to my texts and I’m worried when I phone Kyra.

She sounds hesitant. “He stayed here and left for work about an hour ago.”

“Who’s with you, then?”

“A patrol car is outside.”

“You okay?”

She breathes heavy down the line. “Yeah, I’m good. Jasp, I need to shower.” She’s trying to get me off the line.

“Okay, talk soon.”

I end the call and go to see River to let her know Hannah will be joining us for dinner.

Mikey is running round the yard when I get there. I kick his new ball towards him and his face lights up as he races to it. He seems content, and after everything, it’s good to see.

“Hey, baby,” River greets me.

“Hey, baby,” Sammy mocks, winking at me.

“Your hair looks good, River.”

She touches her new haircut. “Thank you. Sammy is taking me out tonight, so dinner’s tomorrow night. Did Sammy call you?”

I glare in his direction. “No.”

He lifts his hand in a “don’t shoot me” pose. “You’ve been acting like an asshole and ignoring my calls, and I can tell you if you don’t answer check your voicemail before you act hard done by.”

He’s right, I have been. I was worried he would know everything that was happening with me from just the look on my face.

“So, do I get the boy tonight?”

River fidgets. “Actually, I just asked Ky. I didn’t know if you were busy with Hannah. Kyra said you set the date. Which is something that would have been nice to hear from you.”

“I’m sorry, it’s all happening so fast. Oh, here,” I reach in my pocket and pull the scan photo out. I don’t know how I feel about it. I’ve come around to the idea of having a kid; I don’t have a choice, so it’s something I just accepted. But seeing the image in front of me, I just can’t decipher what I’m feeling.

“When did you go have this?”

“I didn’t. She went with her mom.”

A look of wonder lights up her face, then clouds and her brow pinches. “Jasp, how far along is she?”
