The ride from the restaurant seemed much longer when she was going home than when they first started out. Selena shifted uncomfortably in her seat while Ethan stared dead ahead.
“Dinner was lovely,” she said in an attempt to spark conversation. He said nothing at first, and she began to wish she hadn’t been the one to break the ice.
“How could you tell? You didn’t eat much of anything,” he said to her as he ruffled the back of his hair.
The air between them had been tense ever since Selena mentioned her possible pregnancy. But what other reason could there be for her constant nausea? She could see that Ethan had not been prepared for the information, and she was now scared that the life that she had been living all this time was about to come to an end. Maybe she should resign from her job if it would make it easier for him.
“I hope you don’t think I planned this,” she said as he pulled up at her house. She turned to face him directly, but he didn’t look at her at all.
“I’m sure you didn’t,” he replied, but his tone was one of sarcasm. “I will see you at work.”
“Are you sure you don’t want me to quit?” She asked as she suddenly began to grow angry. Right now, she wasn’t even sure she wanted to be working with him anymore.
He turned to look at her for the first time in what seemed like an eternity. “Of course not. Nothing has to change.”
She wasn’t sure she should believe him, but what other choice did she have? She was already behind on her sales, and she needed the money. Ethan had been courting her in the most extravagant fashion, but it wasn’t as if he had opened a bank account for her. She was still on her own as far as her bills were concerned, and she wasn’t about to ask for his aid.
She slowly alighted from the vehicle and walked to her front door. At least he still had the decency to wait until she was inside before driving off. She tossed her coat on the sofa and went into the kitchen. She still felt queasy from her latest encounter with the fish at the restaurant, and she thought she might drink some peppermint tea to calm her stomach. A few hours ago, she had thought everything was perfect, and then she had almost emptied her stomach on his Armani suit. She had felt both embarrassed and surprised at once. Never once did she think she would get pregnant, and how would she pass it off at work? No one knew she was seeing Ethan, and they didn’t know of anyone else either. So what or who would be her excuse?
Maybe she could pretend she had just gotten a donor, but she still had to face Melanie and Krystal. She groaned at the thought of Melanie telling her how wrong she had been to be with him in the first place. But she had bigger issues; she was the pregnant one.
As if she had read her mind, her phone rang, and she could tell by the special tone that it was either Melanie or Krystal. “Hi Mel,” she drawled as she answered the phone. She would have preferred it to be Krystal; she had a way of saying things that didn’t come out sounding as awful as when Melanie said the exact thing. Melanie was always blunt and got right to the point, but that was what Selena needed sometimes.
“You don’t sound so hot for someone who just came from a hot date,” she said right away. Typical.
“You don’t see the sizzle coming through the phone?” She asked sarcastically. She balanced the phone between her ear and her collar bone as she made her way to the bathroom. She grabbed two elastic bands and used them to grab her hair into a low ponytail.
“So how is Mr. Perfect?” She asked, and Selena could see her eyes rolling to the back of her head.
“I saw that,” she said. “It was...a pretty...normal date...for Ethan,” she replied as she tried to choose her words carefully. She didn’t need Melanie breathing down her neck now, even before confirmation of her suspected pregnancy. For all she knew, it could have been the fish.
“There is nothing normal about that man. Where did you go?” She persisted.
“Okay, not that I don’t want to talk, but I need to shower and cool down. Do you mind if we talk later?”
Melanie didn’t answer at once. Then, “okay,” she said. “Call me if you need anything.” Then she hung up, and Selena breathed for the first time since she answered the phone. Had Melanie been there, she would have known something was off. She could very well know now too, and Selena didn’t want to keep her on the phone until she discovered it. Tonight, she needed the silence. She had to face Ethan in the morning, and she wasn’t sure how to do that as yet. Still, she hoped nothing had to change.
But they did. The very next day when she got to work, she heard Ethan would not be in office for the remainder of the week. Her heart caught in her chest as she thought he might deliberately be avoiding her. Her face grew red, and she was happy to be dark skinned in that moment; it allowed her a reasonable hiding spot from the eyes that would search for hidden meanings.
“So, did he tell you where he was going?” Megan asked as soon as Selena sat down.
Selena paused before she looked at the over-sized girl. “No,” she said with a smile. “What Mr. Bloomfield does with his time is his business. Maybe you can ask his personal assistant if you really need to get in contact with him.” She swiveled around and faced her computer, hoping the girl would take the hint and leave. But she didn’t. “What?” she asked as the color began to return to her cheeks.
“You look different today,” Megan said as she looked Selena over like a lioness would her prey.
Selena looked over at her and then turned her attention to the computer screen once more. It was no use arguing with Megan; maybe if she ignored her long enough she would go away. When she didn’t get her answer or anything else from Selena, she walked off. But Selena knew she would be back, and she would be her biggest problem when her pregnancy was discovered. That is if she actually was pregnant, and for a brief second Selena hoped it was just the fish.
By the third day after their date at the restaurant, she was beginning to suspect that she either had food poisoning or she was indeed pregnant. Never had she felt so nauseous in her life, and the feeling would not go away. Even worse was that she might be pregnant for a man who didn’t want a baby with her. She did not plan her life like this, and she wished she had stuck to her original notion of Ethan being a womanizing playboy and left him alone. She had gotten caught up in his game, and now she was a victim of it. And a victim of the worst kind.
She tried to bury herself with work so that she would be out of the office more and away from watchful scrutiny. She was glad that she only felt queasy long before work so it afforded her time to calm her stomach. One mad rush to the bathroom, and there would be no question as to what had happened, but this wasn’t a secret that she could keep hidden.
She took the notes Ethan gave to her and hurried from the office. She glanced at the listing and saw that there was a property close by that she could visit. Perfect. She switched on the ignition and hurried from the basement parking. The house was beautiful and set in stone; it had an elegant design crafted from ancient inspiration, and she fell in love with it. She smiled as she got out of the car and opened the front door. One quick tour of the place revealed a cozy stone hearth, pinewood flooring, beautifully crafted and placed tapestries, and colors that danced on the walls. She wished she had the money to buy it for herself.
“Hello?” She heard someone call from the foyer.
She hurried from the master bedroom where she had been mentally arranging her furniture to greet her prospective buyer. “Hello, Mrs. Dale,” she said as she extended her arm to the customer. She made it her duty to become familiar with the buyers so that they felt more comfortable with her. “Welcome.”
“Hello, Miss Patterson. This is a lovely house. What do you think?” She asked her companion. He grunted and returned to the device he was poring over. “Dylan, please pay attention; your father asked you to accompany me to see what this place looks like.” Then she turned once more to Selena. “It looks even lovelier than the pictures.”
“Mom, you haven’t even seen any of it yet,” he said as he slipped the phone into his pocket and walked off.
“I agree with Dylan,” Selena said. “And with you too Mrs. Dale. This house is a beauty and very elegant, but let me show you the extent of it.” She led the woman to every room, and as she showed her the actual objects, she threw in some background information as she relayed the history of the place and the architectural style. By the time they got back to the foyer, Mrs. Dale was sold.
“Don’t sell this to anyone else; we want it,” she said as she took out her phone and called her husband. Selena could hear the excitement in her voice as she told Mr. Dale about the house.
“So, you just said all of that to get the sale?” Dylan asked when the two were alone.
Selena smiled and faced him. “Dylan, I would buy this house if it wasn’t my job to sell it,” she told him honestly. And there was something in her voice that made him believe her.
“I have to admit, it is pretty cool. I like the feel, like I’m royalty,” he grinned, and she saw his left dimple then.
“She is a beauty. I wonder why it is being sold in the first place. But lucky for us right? You get this, and I get paid.”
He laughed when she spoke. “A symbiotic relationship perhaps?” He asked.
“Definitely,” she agreed.
Just then, Mrs. Dale returned and was seen removing her checkbook from her bag. “I want to ensure I get this house.”
“No, you don’t need to do that,” Selena told her. “Just come into the office at Bloomfield Properties, and we will handle the paper work there.”
“Alright. Lead the way,” she said.
“Now?” Selena asked.
“Can you think of a better time?” She smiled.
Selena couldn’t, and she was hungry for the sale. She hurriedly took Mrs. Dale and Dylan to the office where she procured the documents, accepted the down payment on the property, and was proud to list the property as closed. She hadn’t made a sale in a long while, and she now felt like she was back in business.
The problem now was she wished she could share her success with Ethan, but he wasn’t there. She had known she was trespassing on dangerous grounds when she slept with him, but she hadn’t known the sink hole she would have found in his jungle. Now here she sat, sifting through more property listings, and trying desperately to ignore the fetus growing inside her that would change everything for them all.
