Chapter 7

I woke up the next morning, still naked,
but in Will’s bed instead of on the studio floor. He had carried me to bed
while I slept; my prince charming. I stretched my arms and legs like a cat, as
I felt around the bed for him. It was empty but for me and the endless
assortment of pillows and sheets. No surprises there – Will always had to leave
early for work.

I felt a small box under my pillow, and
jolted awake at the shock. What was going on?

A small black box was resting under my
pillow. I slid it out and looked at the clasp. It said ‘
For Cee’
. Well,
it was definitely for me. I laughed. I wondered what Will had gotten for me.

First, a note was attached to the back.
Will apologized for having to leave before I woke up; he truly wanted to see me
open my gift, but there was an office emergency. I rolled my eyes, and pulled a
loose strand of hair over my ear. I tried to rub the sleep from my eyes, and
pulled the sheets over my bare breasts in case a servant came strolling in.

I undid the clasp on the box, and opened
the lid.

‘
The garden party was your first
surprise of the night, Cee
.” The note said. “
This is the second. I hope
you’ll find this one more to your liking
.”

The box was full of photos. Empty walls.
Hard wood floors. High ceilings. What was I looking at? I flipped back to the
note.

“
The photos… are of an empty building
in the city
.” The note continued.

Will was right about that much. The
photos reminded me of my job at the art gallery. Except for the fact that there
were no features on display on the long bare walls. Wait -

“
This is your gallery, Cee. Set up
especially for you. We’ll display your pieces here, as you create them. I mean
to keep you employed for the long haul
.”

My eyes filled with tears. I tore my eyes
from the photos and looked at the studio where I had painted my first piece for
Will. The morning light from the windows graced the room with a golden aura. I
flipped back to the note again, the pictures tumbling into my lap.

“
I hope you like it. With love, Will
.”

I did. I liked it. I loved it.
