Cora blushed and hid her face against Wolf’s shoulder. “Am I the only one who didn’t know about it?”

“Yes,
mon amour
, I believe you were.” Jean-Paul winked at Micah.

“You need me back to work tomorrow, or you want a few days privacy?” Micah asked.

Wolf chuckled. “Give us a few days. I’ll call you.”

A gurgling cry sent a chill up Wolf’s back. He shoved Cora behind him. The others all turned in the direction of the sound of a bell getting closer. The small four legged creature staggering toward them bared its teeth and bleated again.

“What the fuck is that?” Micah spoke for them all.

“I think it’s one of the lambs we lost.” Dale sounded horrified and fascinated at the same time.

It began snapping its teeth at them while it was still several feet away. “Damn, don’t let it get you.” Rafe dodged a lunge from the little beast and swatted it away with the shovel he still held. It struggled to get up.

“This,
mes amis
, is just wrong.” He pulled his pistol from the waistband of his jeans and fired.

Rafe shuddered and scooped what was left of the lamb up with the shovel. He tossed it onto the fire.

“Well, this is just peachy. No telling what else is roaming around out there. I better get back to work.” Micah tipped his hat and ambled toward his SUV.

Dale sighed. “I’m hungry.”

Rafe shook his head in mock despair. “When are you not hungry?”

“There are some lamb chops… Um, never mind.” Wolf stopped himself. “Let’s drive over to the truck stop. I hear they have good salads.”

Chapter Thirty-Seven:

Together Forever

A shadow fell across her. Cora looked up from her knitting into Jean-Paul’s dark eyes. His expression was infinitely tender and she knew. She looked at Dale. He stood in the doorway waiting. Dale held himself still, as if he would break at the slightest touch. “You’re going, aren’t you?”

“It is time,
mon amour
.”

Wolf’s head came up. He stared over the top of his book at Jean-Paul and Dale, his eyes narrowed. Rafe sighed and gave Dale a half smile.

Cora put down her knitting and got up. She wrapped her arms around Jean-Paul, holding him as tight as she could. He kissed her, a slow, searching exploration meant to last for however long it took until he came back.

“We will return. I promise you that,
mon amour
.” He brushed her lips with his once more then stepped away.

She turned to Dale and held out her arms. He came to her and let her hold him. “Promise me you will be careful and take care of each other?”

“Promise.” Dale’s voice shook. He was close to tears.

She kissed him. “I want you to be happy, both of you.”

Dale nodded. Cora gave him over to Jean-Paul and went to stand with Wolf.

They followed their ancient Vampire and youngest Werewolf out to Jean-Paul’s jeep. The bags were already in the back. Dale climbed in. Jean-Paul waved once and they were off.

When the tail lights of the jeep had faded into the darkness, Cora slipped her arms around her two Werewolves and sighed. “I’m going to miss them.”

“They’ll be back before you know it.” Rafe kissed her ear.

“Yeah, just think of the fun we’ll have welcoming them home.” Wolf kissed her other ear. “In fact, we should practice.” He kissed her shoulder. “A lot.”

“You think so?” She pulled them closer.

“Sounds like a good idea to me.” Rafe swept her up into his arms. “Lock the door, boss. I’ll carry our princess up to her room.” He started for the house. Cora laughed.

“Hey, I thought I was Alpha here.” Wolf caught hold of Rafe’s belt and followed them inside.

* * * *

Jean-Paul smiled in the darkness. Cora would be well protected. Her Werewolves would see to it. And Doc. He had made arrangements should anything untoward happen. He stole a quick glance at Dale and caught the young man watching him. “You are all right with leaving?”

“I’m with you. I’m fine.” Dale smiled back at him.

Jean-Paul rubbed Dale’s thigh. Dale would make a fine partner in what he was about to do. He needed someone strong at his back. “Are you ready to confront the Reapers,
cher
?”

“I survived growing up alone in Old Town, Jean-Paul. What do you think?”

Jean-Paul laughed. Yes, this one would be an adventure to tame. “I think we should begin your lessons,
cher
. And there are only three rules you must never forget.”

“What are they?”

“The first is always obey me.”

Dale nodded.

“The second is never beg,
cher
. No matter what.” Jean-Paul paused. He let the silence grow. Dale simply waited.

“And the third,
cher
…” Pleased with Dale’s show of patience, Jean-Paul pulled off the highway onto the shoulder. He turned the jeep off and faced Dale. “The third rule,
cher
, is always fuck like you mean it.” He pulled Dale into a rough kiss.
