SNAP: New Talent (24 page)

We slowed, I opened my eyes expecting to see the Baron’s castle, and looked at Matthais’ compound.  I screamed, was dumped on the ground and found myself facing terror.

Leonid hissed at me.  “Did you and your pals seriously think you could pull this off?  I’d love to suck you dry, to turn you, to make you my slave, but that’s for later.  I haven’t forgotten the snubs and attacks in Kiev.  For now, your life and well-being is in the hands of Jean-Louis.  How you fare will depend on how Matthais is treated.  You’d best talk to your lover!”

My lover was screaming in my head, and I screamed back, “Leonid has me!”

The last words I heard from Jean-Louis were, “Go to your room!  Stay there!  We’ll come!  Stay in your room!”

My mind bolted into my safe room, where only the present lived, and I began an exile from all I loved.
