Russian's Determined Love (Drobilka Family Series #3) (8 page)

“Yep. Hey, who was that other guy? It wasn’t Boris, was it?”

“Nyet. It was my cousin. I had taken him out as a sort of bachelor party.”

“Oh no, you mean he was getting married?” Nodding his head, Bethany laughed. “Oh, I can’t wait to tell her that.”

Epilogue

Bethany awoke to the sun’s rays warming her body. She opened her eyes and stretched in bed before sitting up. Vadim was already up and from the coolness of the sheets, had been up for some time.

Setting her feet on the floor, she reached for her robe before wandering out into the main living area. The house was still cool, but that would change as the day progressed. While she swore that she would never again get used to the intense summer humidity of Texas, she found that she could tolerate tropical humidity because it was so beautiful.

She wandered outside, but turned when she heard the pounding of little feet.

“Mommy!” came a cry as two tow-headed toddlers came running toward her.

“Hello, babies,” she told them as she knelt down to catch them as they ran toward her. Hugging them to her, she smiled as Vadim joined them.

“I had hoped to let you sleep longer,” he told her as he reached down to help her up.

“I seem to wake with the sun,” she answered as she leaned in to hug him.

“Well, we could always fix that by hanging curtains.”

“No thanks, I like it this way.”

With an arm wrapped around her waist, Vadim escorted her back into the house as the twins scampered ahead.

“I can’t believe how big they’ve grown in such a short time,” she told him as she watched them run.

“Well, considering how tall we are, I suspect this growth will continue for many years to come,” he said as he watched them climb up on to the kitchen chairs to await their breakfast.

“But they are only two.”

“Two and a half,” he corrected with a smile. Bethany agreed with a laugh as he pulled a chair out for her so she could sit down.

Walking over to the counter, he grabbed some veggies and began chopping them up. Within no time, he had omelets cooking on the stove. When he served them, Bethany and Vadim each fed one of the boys while they ate themselves. When they were finished, Bethany took the boys back outside to play while Vadim finished up inside.

She sat and watched while the twins ran around on the beach. Joining her, Vadim handed her a cup of tea, which she accepted gratefully.

“Were you like that when you were that age?” she asked him as the boys ran back and forth, jumping along the water’s edge.

“Oh yes. My grandmother told me that I never sat still.” As he spoke, Bethany flinched, and he jumped to rub her back.

“Here’s another one who won’t sit still,” she complained as she bumped her head against his shoulder.

“The baby keeps kicking?”

“It feels more like jumping jacks. Or possibly somersaults,” she replied as she flinched again. “This one is way more active than the twins were.”

“Well, she has more room,” he replied as he kissed the top of her head.

“She?”

“She. He. It really doesn’t matter to me, but I do think that it’s time that the boys have a little sister to protect.”

She laughed. “They aren’t even out of diapers yet, and you want them to take on a big brother role so quickly?”

“Well, it will have to happen sooner or later, why not now?”

Chuckling, she shook her head. “Did you ever think that this would happen?”

“Dah,” he answered. “We talked about it, remember?”

“We were just dreaming, Vadim. Trying to ignore what we both knew was going to happen. How we got away, I will never know.”

“If it wasn’t for your friend, I don’t think we would have.”

“I was terrified and when I saw you with all those bruises, it was all I could do to keep from launching myself at them. I couldn’t believe that they had beaten you like that while you were in custody.”

“It happens all the time, Malyutka. You know that.”

“It doesn’t mean that I have to like it or approve of it. Especially when it comes to someone who keeps knocking me up. Keeps, being the operative word, husband.”

He slid his arm around her and turned her toward him. “It just so happens, wife, that I
like
knocking you up. You are beautiful, Malyutka, and you are even more beautiful when you are pregnant.”

She tilted her head up with a smile as he claimed her lips, possessively kissing her as she pressed her hand to his chest. She could feel the thump of his heartbeat against the palm of her hand. So strong. So sure.

He kissed her face before trailing kisses down her neck. Sliding his hand inside her robe, he cupped one of her breasts as he rubbed his thumb over her nipple.

He groaned. “And I’d like to say, that with you pregnant or nursing, your breasts look magnificent,” he told her as he bent his head to kiss the tops of both of them.

Bethany leaned back with another laugh. “So that’s your game is it? Keep me pregnant for the bigger breasts?”

He shrugged his shoulders and gave her an impish grin, “Well, it doesn’t hurt.”

She slapped his arm playfully. “Hah, speak for yourself.”

Grabbing her, he pulled her into his arms. “Oh, I am, Malyutka. I most definitely am.”

A sudden crash followed by a cry brought them both to their feet as they found the twins standing next to an overturned side table. Before Bethany could check on the twins, Vadim whispered into her ear. “How about if we put them down early for a nap, so we can get back to me worshipping your breasts,” he told her as she blushed.

“Well, I certainly hope that you have other things in mind as well,” she answered.

“Oh, I do, wife. I certainly do.”
