Prologue

33 A.D.

Jerusalem

Yeshua Ben Yosef, reverently called Lord or Master by his followers lounged on the straw mat surrounded by his twelve disciples and a feast on the table in front of him. Two of his closest and most trusted men sat to the right and left of him, Peter and Judas. Yeshua knew that in one form or another, both of these men would betray him in the end yet still he loved them as if they were of his own body and blood. Soon, they would be quite literally.

His Almighty Father not many days before had appeared to him and prepared him for the days ahead. It was during this conversation that the Almighty Father bestowed upon Yeshua Ben Yosef the true gift of immortal life. A golden chalice appeared before him and he drank. The minute the blood touched his lips, his body convulsed with changes. He cried out in agony as he could feel every cell in his body splitting, multiplying, and transforming. Hours later, he still lay on the dirt floor but his breaths were slowing and evening out. He felt strong, alive, all-powerful…and thirsty. It didn’t take long for Yeshua Ben Yosef to realize there was only one thing that could quench this thirst.

As Yeshua feasted at his Last Supper before he would meet his Creator, he prepared to give his disciples the gift of immortality as well. When the time came, he raised the chalice he had prepared before the meal and said, “Take this all of you and drink from it. It is the cup of my blood, the blood of the new and everlasting covenant.” And because he knew that he would still perish at the hands of the Romans, Yeshua said, “Do this in memory of me.”

Upon drinking of his blood, his disciples all turned, changing into what the Almighty Father himself had deemed righteous. That night Yeshua had a vision and it was quickly written to preserve its importance.

There is but one who has the power

But one who can end the bloodshed

The Battle draws near and she is born

From the Light and the Darkness

There is evil lurking, sweet Queen.

Hasten before all is lost forever.

Bear fruit to the victor and rest peaceably

For life’s despairs outweigh its joys for you.

The next day, Yeshua was seized and though accounts in the Bible portray him as dying on the cross, but when the Romans saw that it would not kill him, it was a spear that ended his existence.

Mary, Yeshua's wife, conceived the night of the Last Supper and bore into the world the first born of the first Vampyre bloodline. By the same token, Judas Iscariot betrayer of the Son of Man, fathered a child with a street whore after he turned and before he met the stroke of a sword by the Roman soldiers when he guiltily tried to return the coins that were awarded to him for turning in his leader. It is unclear whether Yeshua knew it or not, but Judas Iscariot belonged to a long line of betrayers, born from the epitome of darkness itself for Judas was a descendant of Cain, the son of Satan and Eve. Judas and his offspring formed the thirteenth Vampyre bloodline, tainted by the blood of the Devil himself.

Present Day

Worldwide

Five of the twelve bloodlines have been wiped out, systematically killed off by the bloodthirsty, killing-machines, the Descendants of Cain, who officially waged war against the other bloodlines almost a hundred years ago. The Mashiach, those born of the bloodline and the Talmidim, those who drank of the bloodline form the two classes of Vampyre. Present day rule dictates that at maturity, the Mashiach are given the choice of becoming full Vampyre. If one chooses eternal life, another adult Mashiach must bite the fledgling, releasing the necessary chemicals needed to complete the change. If the choice is made not to become full Vampyre, the fledgling will remain as they are and their life will be only slightly longer than an average human. One such fledgling Mashiach was born eighteen years earlier from two powerful Mashiach executed for their love by both of their tribes. Her mother from the line of Rex Deus, Jesus' bloodline and her father of the Descendants of Cain bloodline. Within her blood were the extremes of both good and evil.  Which would win out in the end?

Venus gazed across the sapphire blue lake, her fingers skimming over a rock that was digging into her thigh as she sat on the rocky beach. Her fingers tightened painfully around it inhaling when the pain became a hint of pleasure. She tossed the rock into the lake and went back to brooding. Today was her 18
th
birthday and she was alone. She should have been dancing in circles celebrating her freedom from the foster home she had to endure for five entirely too long years. Though this new found freedom was definitely welcome, Venus still felt the emptiness of having no one.

She had been bounced around from place to place as a child, learning far too early of the extremes of society. She lived in dingy, rat-infested trailers where her hosts cooked up meth in the bedroom closets. She lived in large, beautiful two-stories where the only thing beautiful on the inside was the overpriced furniture and gleaming hardwood floors. Venus learned quickly not to look forward to one situation or another because they all offered her an equal amount of torture. At five, Venus had cigarette butts put out on her arm repeatedly until they blistered up and created an infection so severe she had to be hospitalized. At seven, she was held down in a bathtub while she was covered with spiders by a “foster brother” who laughed while she screamed until she lost her voice and peed all over herself. And when she was thirteen, she ended up with the Campbell’s. Erin Campbell was a lazy, selfish bitch of a woman who tolerated Venus as little more than a maid to pick up after her. Richard Campbell in the beginning, Venus thought was a godsend. He was handsome and sweet and catered to whatever Venus wanted. At least for the first month.

Venus, even at thirteen, was used to grown men fawning over her because of the way she looked. With her long, shiny chestnut hair that fell like silk to her waist, her oval-shaped face and enormous emerald green doe eyes women automatically saw her as competition and men...well men really just couldn't help themselves. Caught in the loop of a broken family services division, she bounced from home to home enduring bouts of physical and emotional trauma.

When she was nine she lived with the McCray's, John McCray would come home drunk nearly every night and seek amusement in Venus' room. He would grab a belt he reserved strictly for beatings off the hook on the wall outside of Venus' bedroom, wake her up from a dead slumber, strip her down to her underwear and whip her with the belt. He wouldn't stop until either she was passed out from the pain or he passed out drunk. She refused to say anything or tell anyone because she knew they would put her in a group home and those were by far the worst of the worst.

So when Venus met Richard Campbell, she was naïve enough to almost feel safe, to almost feel loved. That second month that Venus was at the Campbell home, things started to change. Richard's eyes followed her movements every second of every day. While Erin was home, he would scream at her for no reason and when she left, he would tell her he was sorry and treat her like a princess. Venus had the feeling that things were going downhill fast and once again all she could do was strap in for the ride.

One evening, in Venus' third month there, she finished up her homework quickly. Though she had attended eleven different schools, Venus was incredibly bright and viewed learning as her only outlet from her sad piece of reality. Erin had actually gotten off her butt and gotten a part-time job as a waitress at a little tavern called Moe's. She had already left for the evening and after a tense, silent dinner with Richard, Venus ran up to the comfort of her room. Throwing on her headphones and settling down at her desk near the window, Venus let herself dream. She dreamed of going to college, falling in love, having a family. For once being truly happy. Venus dreamed of all the things just out of her reach. It turned out she wouldn't dream of these things again for another five years.

She was so engrossed in her thoughts, she didn't hear Richard come into the room. She didn't hear him close and lock the door. It was only when he took her by the arm that she looked up and saw the animal in Richard. Though Venus was only in seventh grade, between the other girls in school and the mandatory sex-ed class, she had heard plenty about sex. All Venus could think about as Richard violated her and robbed her of her innocence was how badly she wanted to punch the girls at school who bragged about sex and how it was so amazing. She wanted to yank them by their hair and beat in their lying faces. Richard kissed her all over and murmured soft loving sentiments to her when he was finished. Venus' stomach tightened and rolled and she had to concentrate solely on not throwing up. She wished she could just melt away from the face of the earth. Instead she curled into a little ball and rocked herself to sleep. Venus was not one to cry. In fact, she hadn't cried that night or any of the nights Richard came for her.

Yet, five years later as she sat lakeside, Venus felt an unfamiliar prickle tease the corner of her eye. All these memories and self-pity were wreaking havoc on her emotions. Venus sighed pushing up off the ground, dusted off her dirty bottom, and slung her backpack over her shoulder. With one last longing look at the lake and the towering mountains as the backdrop, Venus turned the other way and headed down the two lane highway. She had no money, no food, no place to go but to hell if she was going to spend one more day in that house.

It was a beautiful Montanan summer day. In the mountains, the sun was bright and warm and filled her with a minute amount of peace. The cool mountain breeze whipped through her hair and Venus let out an audible curse as she had left her hairbrush and knew her hair would be all knots by nightfall. If she had a normal life, Venus would have loved to stay in these mountains forever. But she had to find a way to California, a place she hoped not only held a job for her, but a fresh new beginning.

A shiny black SUV pulled over about fifty feet in front of her. A pang of fear rolled through her stomach. She hated hitchhiking with a passion. Too many nutcases in this world and Venus had too much firsthand knowledge about them. A man opened the driver's side door and stepped out. He wore an expensive-looking black suit that matched his pretty SUV and he definitely didn't look like he belonged in the rugged wilderness of Northwestern Montana. He pulled his dark shades down onto his nose and took a hard look at her. Venus froze, feeling like a deer in the cross-hairs of a hunter's scope.

Prey. His prey.

Her pulse ratcheted up a bit and the stranger actually smiled, his teeth gleaming in the waning sunset. She frantically looked around her and found nothing but dense forest. She needed to bolt but she couldn't bring herself to. Physically, she was unable. The man appeared in front of her in the blink of an eye and Venus gasped, taking in his face with wide eyes. Sure, he was gorgeous. Tall, toned body, probably a designer suit, dark wavy hair. It was his eyes that sent ripples of fear shooting through her system. They were narrowed on her as if he knew her and wanted...yes definitely wanted something from her. His eyes were flat black in color, no spark, no life. Just cold and demanding. He took one more step towards her and leaned down inhaling. He let out a soft breath, a sigh.
