Relentless (23 page)

Her dad pushed everyone aside and grabbed her chart checking all the information. He then came over to her side and said, “I want to take a look at how they stitched you up.”

Michaela didn’t even argue as her dad started to peel back the bandages. The nurse finally arrived looking confused at the amount of people who had invaded Michaela’s hospital room. “Dr. Prentice what are you doing here?”

Her father gave the nurse a stern look before answering, “Checking on my daughter, of course.”

“Oh, I didn’t realize she was your daughter.” She looked around the room and noticed Noah still unconscious on the chair and blood trickling down his forehead. She immediately rushed forward and checked his pulse. “Did no one notice this man needs medical attention?”

Gonzales was the first to answer, “He’s a suspect in a criminal investigation who, as of now, is under arrest. He just attempted to murder Ms. Prentice. His wound was inflicted while she was defending herself.”

The nurse appeared completely unfazed by the FBI agent’s explanation. “What did she do to him?”

“I believe she hit him in the head with a bedpan while he attempted to smother her with a pillow.”

The nurse glanced back at Michaela and grinned. “You go girl.” She flashed a penlight in Noah’s eyes. “Yep, he definitely has a concussion, but he’ll live. I’m going to get a couple of orderlies and get him to emergency.” She quickly left the room.

The nurse and orderlies quickly placed him on a gurney and whisked Noah away while Gonzales trailed behind not willing to let his suspect out of sight.

Vivien Prentice turned her attention back to her daughter. “Is she okay, Will?”

Her father was replacing the bandage. “Yes, she’s fine. The surgeon did a good job and her little tussle with Noah hasn’t seemed to cause any harm. According to her chart nothing vital was hit.”

“So your ex-finance was involved in corporate espionage and then tried to kill you?” Will Prentice asked.

“I think that sums it up,” she told her dad.

“You know that doesn’t make sense,” her dad said.

“I know. I think he might have been a bit crazy. Apparently, he blamed me and Jordan for his inability to complete his last mission, so as revenge he decided to kill me. He was a bit relentless about it.”

“Dad,” Donovan interrupted, “it’s not unusual for these types to lose their rationality. Noah had been very successful and then he was unable to deliver what he promised. His ego won’t let him take responsibility for failure so he focused it on Michaela.”

“And then you always have to watch out for evil billionaires as well.” Jordan put in snidely.

Donovan gave Jordan a grin. “Well, I guess I owe you an apology, but I was watching out for my sister and there was a red flag on your file. So, I’m sorry Marsh.”

“Since we’re going to be brother-in-laws, I’ll accept your apology.”

Donovan arched a brow. “Brother-in-law? When did this happen?”

“I believe Michaela proposed to me just before she got shot. Didn’t you?”

She couldn’t hold back a laugh at the thought of telling that one to her grandchildren. “I guess I did.”

“Jordan, where’s Paul, I thought he was supposed to be guarding my door?” Michaela asked.

“Paul called me and said he’d been in a minor fender bender on his way here so I turned around to come back to the hospital to watch over you until he could get here. I was a bit late since traffic was so bad and then I ran into Gonzales in the lobby who was coming to question you. Thank God I got here when I did, although you did okay with the bedpan.”

She grinned. “I did, didn’t I?”

Epilogue

Three Months Later

Michaela sat at her desk gazing out the front window of her office, which had formerly functioned as Jordan’s den, enjoying a steaming cup of coffee. She could only describe her life as…
perfect.
After Noah had been arrested for his numerous attempts on her life and his involvement in corporate espionage, she and Jordan had been able to move ahead with their lives and their relationship. Not surprisingly, Jordan had been impatient to get married and she had, quite surprisingly, agreed to a very short engagement. They were planning a small, intimate wedding with close friends and family.

She and Trixie had gone forward with their investigation business and were attracting numerous clients. Between her marketing skills and Trixie’s contacts the business had taken off much more rapidly than anticipated. It was truly amazing how quickly your life could change. Jordan surprised her by walking into the room and she smiled at his unexpected appearance. “I thought you had left for the office already.”

He sat down in the chair adjacent to the desk before saying, “I needed to talk to you before I left. Ian and I have decided that we want your firm to conduct a security audit of our company. We’ve always been very confident in our company’s policies and procedures, but after the whole thing with Joyce and Noah trying to breach our security, we’d feel better getting an independent audit. Is that something you and Trixie can do for us?” he asked.

“Absolutely, I’ll have Trixie contact you and you can set up a meeting to outline exactly what you want done and fees,” she smirked before adding, “I think you may be eligible for the friends and family discount.”

He laughed, appreciating her humor. “Great, I’ll set up a meeting with Trixie and Ian.”

“Oh, I don’t think they’ve ever met. Isn’t that funny since they’re the best man and maid of honor of our wedding? Hmmm is he still single?”

Jordan shrugged. “He’s always single.”

Michaela nodded remembering a previous discussion. “That’s right he’s a serial dater. Oh well, I guess its business only for those two.”

Jordan leaned in and kissed her slowly. He lifted her head giving her a sensual smile. “Yes, but we get to mix business and pleasure.”

“That sounds deliciously wrong.”

He pulled her into his lap. “You know I don’t think we’ve properly christened your new office.”

Michaela’s lips met Jordan’s. “What a terrible oversight on our part. We should fix that right away.” She felt his hands slide to her ass, gently stroking her rear. “Can you fit me into your schedule?”

Jordan began undoing the button on her pants. “I think I can fit you right in just about now.”

About Anna Wells

I’m happily married with two children. I love to cook, hike, bike, and hang out with my girlfriends.

I’m an avid romance reader and enjoy all types of romance novels including historical, contemporary, paranormal, and erotica.

Oh, and did I mention I have my own consulting business?

I obviously had a couple of hours left in the day so I began writing romance.   I wanted to bring readers hot, sexy romances that are brought to life with compelling characters.  Who knew writing romance could be as fun as reading it!

My first book Trust Me, an erotic romantic suspense, was published in May, 2013. My second book, Relentless, also quite steamy, was released in March, 2014.
