Introduction
THE PATH THAT LED TO THIS BOOK BEGAN WITH AN INSTINCTIVE FASCINATION WITH WILDLIFE, EVIDENT EVEN WHEN I WAS VERY YOUNG. While I was growing up, my parents, my two sisters, and I lived on my maternal grandparents’ dairy farm in Vermont’s Champlain Valley. My grandfather, who was a business school graduate and machinist before he became a farmer, was quite artistic, and my favorite object in our home was his large, framed pencil drawing of a family of gray squirrels in a huge oak tree. I used to gaze at it for long periods of time, as it was a remarkably good portrait for an untrained artist. To my immense and continuing pleasure, it now graces the wall of my office, hanging just beneath the long-barreled muzzle-loader that was my grandfather’s squirrel gun when he was a boy.
A large drawer in my grandfather’s desk contained a very nice set of antlers from a whitetail buck that he had shot many years before. These also fascinated me, and from time to time I would ask to look at them. Then one obliging adult or another would open the drawer, take them out, and let me handle them for a minute or two before putting them away again.
One day when I was five or six, my grandfather announced that the next day was May 1 (the traditional opening day of the trout season in those days), and that he was going to take me fishing. I was immensely excited, of course, since I had never before been fishing.
The next day Grandpa and I set out for the creek that formed one boundary of our farm, a half-mile or more from the house. Across the meadow we went, down the lane, through pastures and meadows, and eventually beneath the tall, lovely pines that grew in a broad swath of woods between pasture and creek. Finally we reached our destination—a very large boulder beneath which the current swirled and carved a nice little pool in its shady recesses.
The creek, where it bordered our farm, was too far downstream to harbor trout. No doubt it had at some distant time, when Native Americans hunted and fished along its banks. Now, however, it flowed through enough miles of open land to allow the sun to heat the water beyond the range tolerated by trout. There was still good trout fishing not many miles upstream, I later learned, but not where we were about to fish.
All of this made not the slightest difference to me. The pool beneath the rock contained numerous chub and dace—members of the minnow tribe— that eagerly grabbed the worms with which my grandfather helped me bait my hook. Each fish was a new adventure, and I loved every moment of the experience.
At the same time, I came under the spell of the creek itself. True, its waters weren’t cold enough for trout, those most demanding aristocrats of the fish world, but it ran clean and clear. The sight and sound of the moving water as it sparkled, rushed, gurgled, and murmured its way over and around the numerous rocks in its path captivated me utterly—a captivation that continues to this day. Like the Mole in
The Wind in the Willows,
I had entered into the joy of running water!
Our return home was triumphant. I was praised to the skies for the fine catch of dace and chub that I brought home. These were duly cleaned, dredged in flour, sautéed in butter, and presented for my delectation. I thought that I had never eaten anything finer!
School followed—a one-room school a quarter-mile from our home. There was one teacher for eight grades, so of necessity we students spent much time working on our own. Once our lessons were done, we could either ask for drawing paper and amuse ourselves drawing or coloring, or we could read. Sometimes I chose to draw pictures, and these were invariably of birds and animals. Most of the time, however, I read.
The school library, if it could be called that, was minuscule, consisting of a little revolving stand about three feet high that contained a handful of volumes. I did manage, at an early age, to acquire a nodding acquaintance with such things as Greek and Norse mythology from its scanty resources. My greatest pleasure, however, came from the bookmobile that stopped by every two or three weeks. From its manifold treasures I almost always selected books about wildlife. I especially recall several of Ernest Thompson Seton’s books, as well as a little volume written by a naturalist, whose name I’m not sure of now, that contained color plates of several of the animals discussed in it. I was particularly delighted by the author’s reference to the skunk, at one point, as “Sir Mephitis.”
Our home library was also very limited, but I sometimes received books about wildlife for Christmas or birthdays. One, titled
Horns and Antlers
as I recall, educated me considerably about deer, elk, antelope, mountain goats, and the like. We also had a very out-of-date encyclopedia that further enlightened me about the natural world.
At age nine I developed a strong urge to hunt; after some very careful checking, I was deemed sufficiently responsible to go a field with a little single-shot .22 rifle in quest of the wary gray squirrels that inhabited the wood-lands on and near the farm. I was indeed responsible enough to hunt at that age, for I was almost obsessive about safety when I had a gun in my hand.
As my stalking and shooting skills improved, I brought home numerous squirrels for the pot. Actually, we didn’t put them into regular stews; instead, they were usually sautéed or fricasseed with sour cream to make a delicious gravy to accompany the sweet, tender meat.
At about that time, I read a book by Gene Stratton Porter—I believe it was called
Moths of the Limberlost—
that greatly expanded my interests in the natural world. Soon I was collecting our native giant silkworm moths—cecropia, luna, Io, and their kin. Over the next three or four years I managed to amass a fairly creditable display of these gorgeous but seldom seen creatures.
More or less simultaneously, I discovered a very old book called
Boys at
Chequasset, or a Little Leaven.
This was about a rather careless, irresponsible boy whose parents moved into the country. There he became interested in collecting birds’ eggs, and this pursuit eventually led him to reform his irresponsible ways. What I now recognize as the book’s tedious and excessively Victorian morality managed to escape me at that age, but the part about collecting birds’ eggs and displaying them properly fired my imagination. Soon I, too, was collecting eggs, albeit in a very responsible manner. I only removed a single egg from a nest, and then only if the bird was in the early stages of egg-laying, so that she would be sure to lay a replacement egg.
The woods and streams had become my natural habitat, whether I was fishing, hunting, searching for birds’ eggs and moths, or simply enjoying the dim coolness of the forest. My interests also expanded far beyond those creatures that were my quarry. The sight of a pileated woodpecker, a white egret (a rare visitor), or a bittern was enough to make that day a memorable one, regardless of anything else.
When the time for college arrived, natural resource management was a natural career path for me. Actually I chose forest management rather than wildlife management, for several reasons that aren’t germane here. Six years later, armed with a B.S. and an M.S., I began an eight-year stint as a forester for the Vermont Department of Forests and Parks.
During that time it became apparent that we had better become concerned about increasingly severe environmental problems. Rachel Carson’s
Silent Spring
illuminated the horrors that were being caused by many pesticides, such as DDT, which caused eggshells to become so thin that they broke prematurely in the nest, endangering eagles, ospreys, and other species. Many rivers were open sewers, and one, the Cuyahoga, actually caught on fire! Lake Erie, into which the Cuyahoga flowed, was considered a nearly dead body of water. I became an active volunteer with the National Wildlife Federation, and conservation became both my vocation and my avocation.
My interests had now extended well beyond forest management. When a position as area resource specialist for the Vermont Extension Service became available, I jumped at the opportunity. This work greatly broadened my interests and experience, while I also continued my volunteer work within the framework of the National Wildlife Federation.
After three years of extension service work, I was asked to become the Eastern (later New England) Regional Executive for the National Wildlife Federation. This major career shift placed me squarely in the thick of environmental advocacy. It was exhilarating work that dealt at various levels with international, national, and regional issues.
At the national level were issues concerning air and water pollution, pesticides, habitat preservation, and obtaining passage of the Alaska Lands Act. At the state and regional levels were such things as the successful battles to halt the ill-advised Dickey-Lincoln and Big A dams in Maine, and to create several new wilderness areas in the Green Mountain National Forest in Vermont.
Throughout my entire professional career, I had the opportunity to associate closely with the people whom I consider to be the true wildlife experts—professional wildlife biologists and researchers. Many of these became good friends, and I shamelessly picked their brains and peppered them with questions about wildlife. Their uniformly patient, thorough responses added enormously to my store of knowledge about a great many native species of wildlife.
Gradually I became increasingly aware of—and more and more disturbed by—the myths and fallacies about wildlife that I heard with great frequency. Some were excusable misinterpretations or misunderstandings by people far removed from the land and wildlife. Others were ludicrous, yet were accepted and repeated uncritically by people who believed them simply because they had heard them since childhood.
Finally, when I embarked on a new career as a writer, I resolved, if possible, to correct a great many of these erroneous ideas about wildlife. The result was this book. My foremost hope is that you will find this volume, so stunningly illustrated by Trudy Nicholson, thoroughly enjoyable. I’ve tried to provide accurate scientific information, in an accessible and engaging format. Some scientists will no doubt think I haven’t explained some things in sufficient detail to be totally accurate; I beg their indulgence on the grounds that this book is not intended for scientists, but for the lay reader who wants to know more about the fascinating lives of animals.
My second hope, obviously, is to debunk much of the incorrect information that encrusts many of our common species of wildlife. The more we understand the true nature of wildlife and how it lives, the more we come to appreciate and value it.
Finally, I hope this book conveys the endless joy and fascination that I find in wildlife. May you find your life enriched, as mine has been, by these wild fellow inhabitants of our fragile planet.
