Orphan Maker (34 page)

“I’ve got a better idea.”

Loomis looked at her, seeing Gwen eye the loft above. She felt a smile curve her lips. “Is that all you ever think about, Miss Grant?”

“With a phat dime piece like you in my clutches? Hell, yeah.” Gwen cuddled Loomis.

Chuckling, Loomis was content to hold her a few moments. Gwen didn’t press, letting her set the pace as always. “Was it hard?”

Gwen didn’t need an explanation. “She had some trouble, but overall it was easier than it could have been. Emerita is one of the best of the Gatos—she knows her stuff.”

Loomis nodded, the last of her trepidation washing away. Heather had survived and borne a healthy son, the integration of the Gatos into Lindsay Crossing was going well despite Weasel’s demise, and Loomis no longer had to feel alone in a crowd of her own people. “I love you, Gwen Grant.” She looked down at the woman in her arms.

Smiling, Gwen kissed her, her cold lips warming to their task. “I love you, Marissa Loomis.”

“Now about that hayloft…”

With a giggle, Gwen threw off Rick’s jacket and ran to the ladder, Loomis in pursuit. “Let’s play ‘No Hands.’”

“I’ve got a better idea. Let’s see who can go the longest
without
touching the other.”

“Oh!” Gwen clambered into the loft, peering down at Loomis racing up after her. “I like that idea!”

This night was nothing like the one five years ago.
