“Not yet,” she said.
“I’ve got a lot of processing to do before I can talk about it.”
“I understand.”
The sounds of
giggling girls’ voices were coming up from the yard. Riley was sure the
giggling was all about what had been going on among the adults.
Blaine got up and
walked to the deck rail and called down to Crystal.
“There you are! I’ve
been looking all over for you!”
Crystal rolled her
eyes, grinning from ear to ear.
“Come on, Dad. That’s
so lame. We all know who you really came over to see.”
Blaine flushed,
thoroughly embarrassed.
Riley was amused.
Crystal had called the situation perfectly.
For a second, she
was reminded of her father’s words.
“Never trust a
man whose kids don’t hate him.”
She smiled inwardly.
She guessed that this made Blaine trustworthy.
Blaine turned to her
and still clearly embarrassed, took a deep breath and said, “Now that you’re
back, I was wondering if you wanted to all have dinner together at the Grill.
The four of us.”
Riley smiled,
outwardly this time. It had been a long time since she’d been asked out on a
formal date. It felt good. And being with Blaine, even though she barely knew
him, felt good, too.
“I’d like that,” she
said. “I’d like that very much.”
