When she was alone, all Bishop could think about was Claire. It had seemed so perfect. Had she missed the signs? Should she have realised? Knight and Varcoe said no, even Kendrick had in his gruff, clumsy way. She didn’t believe them though, and couldn’t imagine she ever would.

In time, Bishop closed her swollen eyes, exhausted but unable to sleep. Her bed was by the window and after a few hours, she saw an orange glow in the night sky - afire, looked like a big one. She tried to work out where it was, couldn’t and eventually dozed.

This book has been a long time in the making, and there are a number of people who have helped me along. Huge thanks to my agent, Britt Pflüger
of Hardy and Knox (
www.hardyandknox.com
) for her advice, hard work and encouragement.

Thank you also to my lovely friends Charlotte Sing and Debra Ramsdale who read the book and took the time and trouble to give me very valuable feedback and suggestions, along with lots of encouragement. Janet O’Kane also has been very encouraging and gave me some food for thought after reading one of the drafts. Thank you too to my many Twitter friends, for advice, encouragement, and lots of laughs. You are all marvellous.

Thank you to Christa Holland of Paper and Sage Design (
www.paperandsage.com
) for creating just the right front cover.

Finally, a huge thank you to my wonderful family: my partner Tracy and our son and my Mum and Grandma for all of their support and encouragement and most of all for their unfailing belief in me. For Grandad too, who always encouraged me to do whatever I wanted to and who is greatly missed.

You can follow me on Twitter: @rainedonparade and my website is

Thank you for reading. DS Bishop and her colleagues will be back soon.
