With a bigger prize in sight, Jayne was quick to negotiate a deal with Celia. All bananas inside the car and future purchases would be released if Gertie, Fortune and Ida Belle were guaranteed a banana pudding serving each week until Fortune was healed up enough to race again.

As I helped Gertie get the bananas out of her car and watched my cousin skip down the road holding Jimmy’s hand, I realized I had found a new appreciation for her creativity and big heart.

But I still couldn’t wait to get her back to Grandma.
