Wasting no time Kate hangs up on Roger and runs into the
cold after him. She sees Brett headed towards Molly’s snow covered pasture.
When she calls after him Brett stops at the gate. Kate rushes to catch up to
him. Brett reluctantly tells her the ugly truth. If he can’t raise two hundred
thousand dollars by the beginning of next month, he’s going to lose everything.
The land, the horses, everything his grandparents worked so hard to build will
be gone. He knows no one who can loan him that sort of money. His whole way of
life and means to earn a living are a lost cause.
Kate reaches up to wipe the single tear rolling down Brett’s
cheek. Then she thinks of a solution. “My dad’s life insurance policy! When he
died he left me two hundred fifty thousand dollars. Brett, with that money I
can save our farm!” Brett stares at her incredulously. “I can’t let you…
our
farm?
Are you serious? You want to stay with me?”
Kate blushes but continues to insist she is serious. She’s
never been as happy or at peace as she is here, with him. She will not let him
lose everything he holds dear, when she can do something to help. She will not
allow him to refuse. After all he saved her life and she adorns him. Seeing his
beautiful green eyes light up with hope Kate breaks into a wide smile. She
knows she is doing the right thing. Brett, tears streaming down his face,
sweeps her up in a passionate kiss. “There’s only one thing, you can’t make
such as investment and leave. And you can’t live here without being my wife.
Will you marry me?”
Six months later, Kate stands on the porch of the simple
farmhouse in a plain white lace dress. Giant rambling roses flank the arbor
where Brett anxiously waits for her, in front of family and friends. Beyond the
smiling pastor, Molly stands in the lane looking fine for the occasion, ready
to pull the carriage that will take the newly married happy couple to their
honeymoon. Although it’s her uncle standing next to her Kate feels her father
smiling down. As she looks around, she realizes, heaven really is a simple
country farm. And angels can wear cowboy hats.
I hope you enjoyed all three short stories. I’ve more
outlined and plan to write many more. Please help me improve my writing. I
welcome honest reviews as they will help me write the type of story you want to
read. If I’m on the right track or need to change course please let me know.
Many Thanks,
