“For what?”

“For everything you’ve given me. I love you.”

“I love you too.” Rhys kissed him back, a little harder this time, his lips parted. He drew away with a sigh. “Much as I’d like to stay in here and snog all evening, we have guests waiting.”

John laughed. “Yeah. Yeah, we do.”

Back out in the garden, as darkness fell, they played all their old favourites from Beech House. The choir joined in, improvising harmonies—some of which worked better than others, but what they lacked in perfection they made up for with enthusiasm. John’s violin instrumental break in “Danny Boy” got him rapturous applause, and when asked to play more, he broke into “Ashokan Farewell,” which left the choir stunned speechless with its beauty.

“Will you do one of your own songs, Rhys?” Maggie asked. “Play us one of the ones you do at the open mic night at the Red Lion.”

Rhys had been every month since that first time. He was a regular now and had tried out several of his own songs there. The audience had loved them.

“Okay.” He picked up his guitar and strummed a few chords. “I’m not sure which one to sing.”

“‘Second Chances.’”

John’s voice made Rhys lift his head to meet his gaze. Soft yellow light from the open kitchen door meant Rhys could see the sweet intensity in his expression.

John smiled shyly. “I love that one. It’s my favourite of yours.”

“Mine too.” Rhys smiled back and began to play.

About the Author

Jay lives just outside Bristol in the West of England, with her husband, two children, and two cats. Jay comes from a family of writers, but she always used to believe that the gene for fiction writing had passed her by. She spent years only ever writing emails, articles, or website content.

One day, she decided to try and write a short story—just to see if she could—and found it rather addictive. She hasn’t stopped writing since.
