I only get one more pet from him, a gentle
caress of his knuckles across my cheek, and then he’s gone through
the front door and out of my life again, probably forever this
time. I stare after him. I’ve tried to forget so much in my life,
but this I want to remember. Always.

Minutes pass before my master gives my leash
a tug, and when I fall to heel at his side, I know that this truly
is where I belong. He is my master, and I am his slave, his pet,
his Isa. I am his completely, not because I was coerced or forced
or conditioned but because it’s what I am. A black pearl.
