“My dad gave me a sabbatical. I’m
here for two months. And he even gave me the names of some friends
who run a production company on Molokai if I—” She stumbled over
the words she’d meant to use, “fall in love with the island.”
Instead she said, “If I decide I don’t want to go home. I can stay
in a hotel. I’m not inviting myself to move in with you. And
there’s no pressure. I have a life if we decide this can’t work
out. But I want to see, you know?”

The words tumbled over each other
in her attempt to reassure him. Then she caught her breath and
waited.

He didn’t say anything, merely
scooped her hair away from her face and lowered his mouth to hers
in a long, lingering, loving kiss.

Then he picked up her suitcase and
led her into the house.
