“The suspect is shooting at us!”

“We’re FBI!” someone shouted in the background. “Stop shooting and lay down your weapon!”

Crack!!!!!

Crack!!!!!

Crack!!!!!

Crack!!!!!

The gunshots were sounding off through the radio like firecrackers.

“Fuck you!” NaNa could be heard yelling.

Crack!!!!!

Crack!!!!!

Crack!!!!!

The gunshots wouldn’t stop going off.

“I want that bastard alive!” Pamela yelled into the radio. “Shoot to wound or maim but do
not
shoot to kill. You hear me? Do not shoot to kill. I want that bastard to see his day in court!”

More gunshots.

Pamela listened intently. She didn’t even blink.

“Officer hit. Officer hit!” someone screamed.

“Do not fucking kill him!” Pamela yelled into the radio again over the gunfire and pandemonium. “If you hit him, give his ass CPR. Give him the fucking Heimlich Maneuver. I don’t give a fuck. And get an ambulance in route immediately. Just don’t let that muthafucka die!”

The gunshots continued going off like firecrackers and landmines.

Finally…

“He’s down. The suspect is down!”

Anxiously, Pamela asked, “Is he alive?”

No answer.

“God damn it, is the suspect alive?”

Silence.

“Unit Three, come in. Is the suspect alive?”

Seconds later…

“Sorry, sir,” a response finally came through. “Suspect’s dead. Took a head shot.”

Pissed off completely and unable to contain her rage, Pamela threw the radio across the room into a wall so hard it broke into dozens of pieces.

Nothing had gone according to plan.

               * * *

Chavez was exhausted as he climbed off of Nessa and lay on his back breathing hard and staring up at the ceiling. The two were at a cheap motel outside of Washington.

As soon as Chavez was tipped off about the pending raid, he made arrangements to get out of town. Without telling Nessa about the raid, though, he simply invited her out for one last fuck before he left the country. Afterward, he would head to the next state where he had a private jet waiting. He would hop on that jet and leave America behind.

When Nessa arrived, she made sure to step to Big Joe to ask him one simple favor; leave her and Chavez alone and uninterrupted for their  meeting. She even said she would throw him ten stacks for the gesture. He obliged and waited outside in the car.

When she walked in the room, it was silent, except for the sound of a burning cigar.

Lighting up a Cuban cigar, Chavez heard his phone vibrating on the nightstand. Grabbing it, he saw a text notification. He opened the notification.

Jet Gassed Up And Ready
, the text read.

Pleased, he sat the phone back down on the nightstand and took a hit of the cigar. Exhaling smoke to the ceiling, he thought about his homeland, Columbia, the place he was headed. It wasn’t everything that America was but it would do. He’d lay low until the heat blew over. Hopefully, he would be able to come back to America one day.

“Why do you love me?” Nessa asked interrupting Chavez’s chain of thought.

“Why do you ask that?”

Curling up closely beside him and resting her head on his chest, she said, “Just going through some things right now. I need to hear your words.”

Feeling he had Nessa wrapped around his finger, he rubbed her head and said, “Because you’re much more than just beauty. You’re much more than just a pretty face. That’s difficult to find in my line of work.”

Nessa listened while staring at the darkness of the room.

“You have ambition,” he continued. “You believe in going out getting what you want with no fear of getting your hands dirty. I like that. But above all, there’s one thing that truly made me fall in love with you from the very beginning.”

“What’s that?”

“Your intelligence. You’re definitely the smartest woman I’ve ever met.”

Smiling, Nessa raised her head from Chavez’s chest, kissed his lips and slipped out of bed naked. Slowly, she made her way across the room to the window but not before grabbing her purse from the floor and pulling out a small case. Dropping the purse, opening the case, she pulled out a pack of cigarettes and fired one up.

As Nessa walked, Chavez watched in admiration of her curves. He watched the sway of her hips, the swing of her ass. It was a shame this was most likely the very last time he was going to fuck her. It had been fun while it lasted.

Reaching the window, Nessa pulled the curtain open, leaned a shoulder against the wall and took a pull of her cigarette. Staring out the window, she saw Big Joe asleep in the driver’s seat of the Jaguar parked outside the room. The side of his head was resting against his window. Sighing, she said without turning around, “My intelligence, huh?”

Smiling and placing a forearm underneath the back of his head, Chavez said, “Yes, I truly love that about you.”

Still, without turning around, she said, “Then I’m pretty sure you can understand my dilemma.”

“Dilemma?”

“Yes.”

“What is it?”

“I hate when people underestimate my intelligence.”

Chavez didn’t quite know what she meant. “Elaborate,” he said.

“Like right now. Moments like this one.”

“I don’t follow.”

She turned, holding her purse. Facing him, she said, “Like when a man that I truly admire brings me to some cheap motel, fucks me and smiles in my face as if he hasn’t been trying to steal one of my closest workers from me, or as if he hasn’t been stabbing me in my back for all this time while working with one of my enemies.”

The smile slowly began to dissipate from Chavez’s face. “Excuse me?”

Nessa didn’t say another word. She simply watched Chavez’s eyes from the window. She had no expression on her face.

Feeling uncomfortable, Chavez asked, “Nessa, what are you speaking of?”

“You tried to recruit Trinity.”

“Huh, what are you talking about?” He chuckled. “Why would I do something like that?”

Nessa said nothing. Once again, she eyed him.

“Come to bed, sweetheart. No more talk of nonsense.”

“Nonsense, huh?”

“Yes, nonsense.”

“Is the fact that you and Chetti have been plotting behind my back nonsense, too?”

Chavez grew nervous. He attempted to play it off though. Chuckling, he said, “Baby, I don’t know where you’re getting your facts from but…”

“I know you were the one who robbed me!” she screamed.

“Nessa…”

“I know about you being in debt to Chetti. I know about it all!”

Chavez knew the jig was up. “Nessa, now look,” he attempted to explain.

Nessa pulled a .25 from her pocketbook equipped with a silencer.

Chavez’s eyes widened. Sitting up, he demanded, “Nessa, put that damn gun away.”

Nessa aimed.

“I’m not fucking playing with you.”

“Does it look like I’m playing?” Although angry, Nessa’s demeanor and the tone of her voice were calm as she now aimed the gun.

“Nessa, you’re not thinking rationally right now. Think about this. You know who I am. You know how powerful I am. I represent a lot of money for a lot of important people. If you shoot me, cartels and kingpins from all over the country will be hunting you.”

Click-Clack!!!!!

Nessa cocked the gun.

“Damn it, Nessa!”

“I don’t take betrayal nicely, Chavez.”

“Shit, you act like what I did was personal. It was business. I owed a debt so I paid it. That’s all.”

Chavez caught himself. “Wait a minute. What the fuck? Bitch, I don’t owe you an explanation for what the fuck I do. Bitch, drop the gun or will have Joe come in here and rip your ass apart!” Nessa laughed, knowing Big Joe was not going to move his fat ass from the car.

“You just don’t get it, do you?” she asked while shaking her head. “Your arrogance has you so fucking blind right now.”

“Nessa, put the damn gun down now!”

“Bye, Chavez.”

Nessa squeezed the trigger. A sharp darting sound left the silencer as the bullet whizzed from its tip and entered the center of Chavez’s forehead causing him to fall backwards flat on the bed. With his eyes wide open, he lay there staring at the ceiling. A thin stream of blood ran from the hole in his forehead, trickled down the side of his face and stained the pillow.

After staring at the body for a moment, Nessa felt numb. Calmly, she got dressed. Moments later, she opened the door of the room. As she did, a cool breeze rushed inside the room and blasted her face. Pulling the collar of her coat tight around her neck, she headed across the sidewalk to the Jaguar Joe was still asleep in. Reaching the driver’s side window, she knocked on it awakening Joe from his sleep. She then signaled for him to roll down the window, waving the ten stacks. Still sleepy, he pressed a button and the window came down. As soon as it did, Nessa brought the .25 in sight and squeezed the trigger twice. Both bullets ripped into Joe’s face and knocked him backwards until the back of his head was resting against the headrest. With his eyes staring lifelessly straight ahead, blood ran from the two holes ripped into his forehead.

Nessa stared at Joe for a moment. As she did, she saw the face of the man her father had killed so many years ago. She saw her father’s face. She saw Chavez’s face. She saw the faces of every dead man and woman she’d ever come across. The memories and scenes broke her heart. This wasn’t what she asked for. This wasn’t what she wanted.

A white Lexus pulled into the parking lot. Slowly it approached Nessa, its brakes squealing lightly as it slowed. When it reached her, nonchalantly she stuffed the gun into her purse, headed to its passenger side door and climbed in. Awaiting her in the driver’s seat was Trinity.

“It’s done?” Trinity asked.

Simply staring ahead through the windshield, without looking at Trinity, Nessa said, “Yeah, let’s go.”

Trinity turned the car around and pulled out of the lot. Seconds later, the Lexus was hopping on the nearest highway’s on ramp headed back to Washington.

Chapter 21

The early morning sun was rising. Its rays were beginning to shine down over the streets of Washington. As it did, the Lexus separated from traffic and hit the exit ramp. As it did, Nessa’s head was resting against the window as she stared at the outside world with almost a blank stare.

“You alright, Nessa?” Trinity asked. “You sure you’re up for this?”

“Yeah,” Nessa answered with no emotion. She was just ready to get it all over with. She then leaned forward, opened the glove compartment and pulled out a .380. She’d felt the .25 she had used to kill Chavez and Joe wouldn’t pack the type of menacing force she would need to deal with what was coming next. She had to be sure she had something that would ensure her next target would
never
get up again in life.

“While you’re asking me if I’m sure
I’m
up to this, the question is are
you
sure
you’re
up to this?” Nessa asked, looking at Trinity. “Are you ready?”

“I’m sure,” Trinity answered. “I’m definitely ready. I’ve been ready for as long as could remember. I just didn’t know exactly when it would happen.”

A bitterness developed inside Trinity. It began to show on her face. “Luke killed my son.”

              “What?” Trinity gasped.

“He murdered him in cold blood.”

              Nessa’s mouth dropped.

“My son was castrated. He was tortured. Then he was shot in the head.”

              “Oh my god.”

“I told my family I didn’t want my son in that life. I told them I didn’t want him involved. Behind my back, though, they brought him in. Then, for whatever reasons, they killed him. Luke pulled the trigger.”

              Nessa was speechless.

“I hate them. I hate my bloodline. I hate the fact that I’m related to them. So, yes, I’m up to this. Yes, I’m definitely ready.”

Nessa looked out at the streets. She felt bad for Trinity. She could relate to what Trinity was going through. Now, she clearly understood why Trinity saw the two of them as sisters.

              The car was silent.
