We had been home for four days now, and that damn kiss was all I could think about for Christ’s sake! Ravyn had a power over me that would make me feel loved even if she was killing me. Maybe that was why I was always irritated with her, because of her control.
She also made some kind of deal with the Vatican. She was the reason my daughter was put in a cage. I had to find out exactly what she had done. So I got out of bed and opened the window. The cool air assaulted me while I looked out into the darkness.
Ravyn, please come talk to me
, I called to her silently. I waited, listening carefully for any sign of her.
Please Ravyn?
I asked again, shivering as the cold air swept over my warm skin.
“Who are you waiting for?”
Her voice whispered at my back. My heart leapt into my throat and I spun to face her, almost losing my balance in the process. “Jesus!” I cried out, pressing my hand against my chest.
“You called for me?” she said with a cocky grin.
“How did you get in here?” I asked. She merely pointed to the door. “Oh, I didn’t think you were in the house.”
“I wasn’t, but I figured I could use the front door now that I’ve met Chloe. What is it you need Kara?”
“I think we need to talk about everything that’s happened,” I replied as I sat on the edge of the bed.
“Do we?” She laughed.
“Yes, we do. You saved both of us, and I really don’t understand why you are being so nice to Chloe when you wanted her dead. You messed with my memories. You kept the nature of your business from me. You put Abby in danger. Oh, and apparently you made a deal with Peter? I’d like to know what the hell you’ve been thinking,”
“I guess I wasn’t thinking at all,” she replied.
“Don’t shrug me off Ravyn. You owe me answers.”
“I could say the same about you Kara. Your little adventure with Devlin while I was away. At least I was being faithful.”
“I’ve been more than faithful to you. Don’t you dare throw that in my face! I didn’t do anything with him. I had a couple drinks and then I was…I saw the memory and stopped him.” I gasped at the sudden realization of what would have happened if that memory hadn’t been unlocked in that moment. My anger grew with the sudden eye opener. How many times would I be betrayed by people I thought were friends? The answer was easy. Never again, because I would never fully trust a demon again. I didn’t want that equation to include Ravyn, but it had to. “What else have you kept from me? How many other memories did you take, and how did you get into my mind like that?”
Ravyn smiled, shaking her head at my accusation. “Hiding a memory from you is not that easy, nor is it as enjoyable as you make it sound. You know what would have happened if I didn’t plant that safeguard? Everything I do is to keep you from being hurt.”
Her overly calm tone was more than irritating. I needed her to show some kind of emotion over what happened; I wanted her to be mad that I didn’t trust her, that I almost had sex with Devlin. “What about Abby? The deal you made with Peter? And this ridiculous Arena business?”
“Abby was safe with me, and the Arena saves the lives of innocent humans. It is a necessary evil. As for Peter, I foolishly agreed that he could intervene if the child was born because I once thought I could protect you. A mistake I will not make again. And then we have little Chloe, who is your world, and I will not see that world destroyed ever again. Did I miss anything?”
“You forgot to mention how everything you do to protect me ends up hurting me. All this calm confidence on the outside, it’s just a false image. I know the monster will show its ugly head sooner rather than later.” I shrugged as I took her hand, pulling her closer. I could feel the waves of pleasurable tingles under my skin as her fingers glided slowly up my arm.
“You don’t want to see this monster Kara, so leave it alone. Don’t push for this argument.” Her eyes snapped to the window. “Take Abby and go to Chloe’s room. Do not come out. Go!” She pulled her daggers and leapt out the window.
When Ravyn says go, you don’t ask questions, you just go and as fast as you can. I rushed to Abby’s room; grabbing her hand I pulled her into Chloe’s room. She followed my instructions and kept quiet for a while, then became impatient. Abby insisted there was nothing wrong, but I couldn’t take any chances.
We stayed in Chloe’s room for what felt like an hour. The house was too quiet, so I sent worried thoughts to Ravyn, but she never came to assure us everything was fine. Then I heard the front door slam and laughter break the silence, Angie’s laughter. I quickly left the room to see what was going on. Carefully peeking downstairs, I gasped loudly and rushed to aid her.
“Flame.” I called my powers to life. The tiny blue flames licked over my hands as I moved toward Lokie, who had Angie trapped against the door.
“Let her go!” I ordered, coming to a stop behind him.
Lokie’s laughter echoed through the foyer. Angie peeked her head around Lokie, smiling and giggling wildly.
“Angie?” I said.
“Hi,” Angie replied.
Lokie turned to face me. His shirt was unbuttoned and so were his pants. “Good evening, young Kara,” he said with a charming grin.
“OH MY GOD! Angie! Get out of my house, Lokie!” I whispered and shouted at the same time.
Before they could say or do anything I felt the warm breeze sweep around me, then I was being whisked away to Ravyn’s room where I was dropped on the bed. Ravyn prowled over my body, finally showing me the monster that I both missed and feared. Her clawed hand carefully slid under my shirt, and when her claws hooked around the neck of my shirt, I smiled with anticipation. She hesitated just long enough for my thoughts to get the best of me. Grabbing her wrist I shook my head. “Why is Lokie here? And why aren’t you worried?” I whispered.
“I want to taste you,” she breathed, while her knees spread my legs open.
Her body pressed against mine. My breath caught and my worries vanished. Ravyn ripped my clothes to shreds, and then plunged her tongue inside of me.
Yep, she tasted me all right, but never my blood, which is what I thought she wanted all along. She wasn’t her usual overly gentle self either. It was slightly rough, in an intensely passionate way. Ravyn was a beast of perfection when it came to sex, and she knew how to awaken a sexual predator within me. I could never have enough of her, and tonight she proved she could never have enough of me.
She licked me until I hurt. Literally my whole body hurt, from her contorting my body, and the never-ending orgasms. I’m not complaining at all. Here is the best part; we didn’t cuddle like we usually did. This time I just lay on top of her for the longest time, watching her sleep. She dreamt now, and when she did, her demon occasionally got loose. When it did, she snarled. It was very sexy and slightly worrisome.
I didn’t get much sleep that morning. I was too sore, and I was berating myself for not being more worried about Lokie. Ravyn was already gone, so I slid out of bed and hobbled to the closet in search of some clothing.
I headed downstairs to find my Chloe. “Morning Angie. Would you like to explain why Lokie was here last night?”
“Good morning to you too, sweetie,” she replied cheerily while I poured my coffee.
I looked at her curiously. “This is the same Lokie that put me and my daughter in a glass cage. What the hell are you thinking?”
“He’s on our side Kara, and he really is a good guy.”
“Oh my god Angie! You did not do what I think you did!”
“I most certainly did,” she replied with a smile.
“With Lokie?”
“He was incredible,” she purred.
“Please don’t tell me any more. You’re sleeping with the enemy, Angie,” I said.
“He tried to take care of you two. He helped Ravyn find you. It’s complicated, but you can trust him.”
“Like I trusted Devlin? What if Lokie is spying on us?”
“Devlin messed up, Kara. He is lost without Lilith. He will come around. Lokie on the other hand is not lost. I’ve known him for a very long time; I would trust him with my life. Besides, you didn’t seem too worried about him last night after Ravyn swept you away,” she reminded me with a giggle.
“Well, I am blaming all distractions on her today.”
“It sounded like an amazing time.”
“Where is Chloe?” I suddenly realized how quiet it was in the house.
“She’s with Ravyn.”
“She’s what! Why would you let that happen? Sorry, not your fault,” I said before heading outside. “Chloe! Chloe?”
“Hi Mommy!” Chloe called back.
Following her voice upward to the roof, I found her standing with Ravyn, who was holding her waist making sure she didn’t fall. “Ravyn! What are you doing? Oh my god, please bring her down.”
Ravyn looked at me, and then looked back at Chloe. A smile spread across her crimson lips when Chloe whispered in her ear. Then she took Chloe’s hand and stood; her wings emerged and fluttered. She lifted Chloe into her arms, holding her tightly, and then let her large black wings carry them off the roof. She flew circles above me, making Chloe laugh wildly with excitement. I watched without fear or worry for my daughter. I knew she would be safe in Ravyn’s arms. Then she landed in front of me, carefully easing Chloe to the ground.
“Good morning, Kara,” she said before taking off into the sky again, waving as she disappeared from view.
Picking Chloe up, I kissed her cheek. “What were you two doing up there?” I asked.
“We were sharing secrets,” she replied quietly.
“What kind of secrets?”
“Secrets aren’t meant to be told Mommy.” She giggled.
“True. But you are not supposed to keep secrets from me. Do you have a lot of secrets?” I asked as I carried her up into the house.
“No, but Ravyn does,” Chloe admitted.
“Yes, she does. Do I know all of your secrets?”
“No, I have a new one.”
“Will you tell me your secret when you are ready?” I asked nervously.
“I can show you, come on.” Chloe pulled me up stairs in a rush of excitement, closing the door to my room behind us.
“What is it baby?” I said, trying to hide my growing nervousness. Chloe closed her eyes like she was trying to concentrate too hard. When I was about to tell her to take a break, it happened. Small white wings appeared from her back.
I gasped as the shock of the situation rattled my over-emotional brain. Chloe’s little wings flapped restlessly and began to carry her off the floor. “Chloe come back down.”
“I can’t control them,” she confessed as she fluttered around the room.
“How do you turn it off?” I asked, reaching up to grab her and pull her down. Her wings continued to flap wildly while I held onto her ankles. Not knowing how to help her I again called for Ravyn via thoughts. As usual, she arrived not long after.
She calmly walked into the room, erupting into laughter at the sight of me barely holding onto my daughter while her wings went crazy.
“Ravyn, how do we stop them?” I didn’t hide my urgency.
Ravyn stood behind me, and her arms reached under mine, taking Chloe’s hands. “Don’t let go Kara. Chloe, relax. Remember you are in control. Close your eyes and see your wings slowing.” Chloe’s wings suddenly slowed. “Good, now pull them back in. See it happen, you can do this.” Within seconds the wings disappeared. Ravyn stepped away, and I pulled Chloe against me, holding her a little too tight.
“I did it!” she exclaimed happily.
“You sure did. You cannot forget, you do not fully control them yet, so let’s not do that without me around until you know how to use them,” Ravyn said softly.
I smiled and mouthed my thank you to her before she left.
“Did you see me, Mommy?” Chloe asked as she jumped up and down on the bed.
“You are my special little girl, you know that right?” I said proudly.
“I know,” she replied with a giggle.
“Ravyn’s right though, no more wings unless she is with you. I don’t want my special little girl flying away. Understood?” I said firmly.
“I won’t.”
The day went on as I busied myself with a thorough cleaning of the entire house. I tried not to think about Chloe’s new wings and the gentle way Ravyn handled her and truly cared for her. Then there was the insanely great sex that was clouding my mind. But what was concerning me the most was how she pressed her body against mine when she was helping Chloe. Ravyn shouldn’t be touching me like that in front of Chloe. I wondered if she did it on purpose. Of course she did! And why the hell was Ravyn confiding in a child, anyway? My gut was telling me she was up to something, but my heart trusted her as it always did.
When I finished cleaning Chloe’s room I ran right into Ravyn as I rushed out with the laundry basket. Her hands were quickly on my waist to steady me. “God you need bells on you or something!” I snapped.
“You need to listen more.” She laughed.
“What are you up to?”
“I’m going out for a while, do you need anything?”
“Oh, where are you going?”
“Out,” she repeated.
“Really? Just out? That’s not going to work with me anymore, Ravyn,” I replied.
“I need to feed and take care of some things with Lokie,” she explained with a smile.
“Okay. I’m going to get a couple of movies and some pizza. You want to join us?”
“I don’t think I will be home by then.”
“Oh, okay. Thanks again for helping Chloe today. You were really good with her. It’s hard not being like she is, I don’t understand how to help her with so many things,” I confessed sadly.
“You’re doing just fine Kara. I have to get going,” she said.
“Hey!” I blurted out, not wanting her to go. She turned with that wonderfully cocky grin. “I’ll see you soon.”
“Yes you will,” she said with a wink.
That was all it took to make my spirit soar, just three words. I started a load of laundry, then grabbed my coat and keys and headed out to get some goodies for movie night. Nebiros was outside playing with Chloe. “Hey, have you seen Abby today?” I asked.
“She left about an hour ago,” he replied.
“Did she say where she was going?” I asked.
“She never does anymore.” He shook his head.
