He let out a short
laugh as he shifted his feet further apart, still resting casually
against my car. “Your what? Your boyfriend?”

No,” I
lied, turning my face over toward the slow moving traffic.

He reached out and took
my hand in his, pulling me gently into the space between his legs. “I
am
your boyfriend,” he said softly as he wrapped his
arms around my waist.

I gazed up at him with
my body resting against the firmness of his, my skin becoming
awakened by his touch. I couldn't help but give him a seductive smile
as I whispered, “Then why don't you act like it?”

A tiny spec of green
flickered momentarily in the deepness of his eyes. “I will,
you'll see.”

Oh god, just kiss me
already . . .

The faint sound of
electricity buzzed through the air, interrupting our close moment.

What
is
that?” I asked, looking around for the sudden onset of the
annoying zapping noise.

Jonah let go of my
waist and we stepped away from the car, scanning the area for clues.
“I don't know,” he frowned. “I can't figure out
where it's coming from.”

My head lifted to the
black and yellow Walley's Burger Shack sign that was flickering on
and off above us. “I think it's the sign, but it's daytime; it
shouldn't even be on right now.”

We watched the unsteady
board as it buzzed louder and louder, until it finally topped out at
a high-pitched frequency.

I think we
should get out of here,” Jonah suggested as he walked around to
the passenger's side of the car and got in.

Yeah, that's
probably a good idea.” I sat down in my seat and peeked up
through the window to look at the sign once more. “That's so
weird.” I reached over to pull my door closed but stopped at
the sound of a loud explosion. The Walley's sign shattered in the air
above, sending shards of black and yellow glass raining down around
us, covering the hood of my Honda. “Oh my gosh!” I
screamed as I looked down at my arm, feeling the intense fire of a
fresh cut.

Jonah swung his door
open and got out to look at what was left of the sign. “What
the hell was that?” he yelled up at it.

I think the sign
exploded,” I called out as I wiped the glass off of my skin,
noticing a fine slice down the top of my forearm.

Are you okay?”
he asked as he hurried around to see me. “Are you hurt?”

I shook my head and
turned in my seat, resting my feet on the shards of glass that
covered the asphalt. “Uh, yeah, I'm okay. I got cut by some
glass, though.”

He crouched down next
to me and gently took my arm to inspect it. The cut wasn't too deep,
but it was starting to show it's length as a fine line of blood
creeped out past my skin. His face was covered with worry as he blew
the fine shards of glass away from it. “Yeah, you did get cut.”

A rush of people came
running out of the restaurant to see what had happened, including Fox
who hurried over to see me. “Are you okay, Summer?” he
asked as he knelt down next to Jonah.

Yeah, some of
the glass hit my arm before I had a chance to close my door.”

He looked at the fine
cut on my arm and sighed. “Oh man, I'm so sorry.”

I shook my head softly.
“It's okay. It was so weird, the sign was buzzing really loud
and then it just exploded.”

I looked down at the
two of them crouched in front of me, their faces both riddled with
worry as they listened to me talk. I knew at that moment that what
Jonah had said earlier was right; Fox looked at me the very same way
that he did.

You know, it's
interesting,” Jonah said, peering over at Fox with annoyance,
“the sign wasn't buzzing until right before we got in the car.”

Fox reached up and
brushed some more of the tiny fragments of glass away from my skin,
being careful not to touch the thin line of blood. “That's so
weird; I'll have to call someone out to look at it and see exactly
what happened.”

Jonah clenched his jaw
at the sight of Fox's fingers gently touching my body. He slowly
stood up and crossed his arms, looking down at Fox with a angry
glare. “Hey Fox,” he uttered above him, “don't you
dabble in a little electricity every now and then?”

Fox closed his eyes at
Jonah's words and breathed in deeply, lifting himself up and meeting
him face to face. “Yeah, so?” he shot back with a tight
voice.

Well, the sign
was fine until right before we left. I'm thinking that maybe you had
something to do with that.”

Jonah,” I
interjected as I jumped up from my seat.

No, no, it's
okay,” Fox answered. He crossed his arms like Jonah's and tried
to make himself look bigger as he stood facing him, which was a
failed attempt. “I think your boyfriend has a bit of a problem
with me,” he scoffed.

You're damn
right I do,” Jonah snarled back at him. Flecks of red began to
show themselves in his eyes as he stood firmly in place, ready to
fight if the moment called for it.

Fox pulled his head
back with surprise. “Well well, it looks like we've got
ourselves another Divine in the neighborhood . . .”

I'm only gonna
tell you this once, Fox,” Jonah growled, “I'll kick your
ass if you ever touch my girlfriend again.”

I put my hand on
Jonah's tensed bicep, feeling the heat that radiated off of it as he
stood heavily in front of my boss. “Jonah, let's go,” I
said softly next to him.

A cocky laugh fell from
Fox's mouth as he took a step back. “Yeah, Summer's right; I
think it's time you get off of my property.”

I tugged on Jonah's
arm, trying to get him to budge. “Hey, I still need to get
something to drink. Let's get in the car and go to your mom's, okay?”
His stood his ground in front of Fox, not ready to back down at all.
“Come on,” I cooed gently next to his ear.

It took him another few
seconds before his arms relaxed and released down to his sides. When
he did I grabbed onto one and hugged it tightly as though I needed
it's intense heat to warm my body.

Fox crunched over the
broken glass as he made his way back toward the restaurant. “See
you tomorrow, Summer,” he called to me casually. “Oh, and
one more thing, if your boyfriend comes on my property again I'll
have him arrested.”

The small drama-fed
crowd that was left followed Fox in, leaving us alone in the parking
lot.

Jonah shook his head as
he watched the door close behind them. “What a tool.”

Get in the car,”
I growled tightly.

He shot me a look of
surprise. “What? What's wrong?”

Jonah, just get
in the car.” I let go of his arm and slid back into the
driver's seat.

He went around and got
in the passenger's side, slamming the door loudly next to him. “Oh,
what, so now you're pissed off at me?”

Yes, I am,”
I said as I reached down and picked a shard of yellow glass up from
the floorboard, hurling it onto the pavement with the rest and
slamming my door closed.

Why? I was just
standing up for you.”

Pieces of broken glass
crunched underneath the rubber tires as I reversed out of the parking
lot and drove down the road. “What do you mean, standing up for
me?” I argued. “I don't need you to stand up for me, he
didn't even do anything to me.” My voice was angrier than I had
intended it to be. I breathed sharply through my nose and tried to
relax; he didn't deserve for me to be that angry with him.

Jonah looked out of his
window, leaning his elbow against the door and resting his hand
against the side of his head. “You just don't get it, do you?”
he calmly asked.

No, I guess I
don't.”

Fox broke the
sign, Summer.”

Jonah, that's
ridiculous,” I said, letting out a mocking laugh as I shot him
a glance of confusion.

He looked over at me,
his red eyes gone, a pleading gaze in their place. “Please, you
have to believe what I'm saying. Do you remember all the times that
we've been close to each other at the restaurant?”

Yeah,” I
nodded.

How many of
those times did the lights flicker on and off?”

I breathed a heavy sigh
and stewed over his accusation against Fox.
Is Jonah right? Could
the sign have been Fox's doing?

Summer,”
he continued softly, “you are the smartest person I know. You
can't sit there and tell me that every time weird stuff happened in
the restaurant like that, that you didn't think that it was Fox
freaking out over you being with me.”

I, I'm not
sure.”

Don't give me
that bull,” he shot back.

I shrugged my shoulders
and stared ahead at the road. “I mean, yeah, I guess. There
were a lot of times when I wondered if it was him doing stuff to the
lights.”

It's not just
him doing something to the lights, either. He's angry that we're
together, he's mad that he doesn't have you.”

But I don't want
him,” I snapped.

His hand rested softly
on my shoulder, delivering a comforting warmth that permeated through
the fabric of my shirt. “Believe me, I know you don't want him.
But he wants you. And all I know is that the sign was fine until I
pulled you into me.”

I glanced over at him
and managed a small smile before looking back at the road. It didn't
matter how much excitement we had just been through from the sign
shattering over us, or how irritated we were in our argument over
Fox, him bringing up my body being pulled against his won over my
thoughts.

That was really
nice, by the way,” I flirted.

A light chuckle bled
from his lips. “Don't change the subject,” he said,
giving my shoulder a squeeze before dropping his hand down to rest on
his jean-covered leg.

We pulled into his
mom's driveway and I turned the car off with a heavy sigh. “Thank
you for sticking up for me. But next time, wait until he actually
does something that validates you showing off your anger. Now he
knows who you are.”

Look, I don't
really care if he knows that I'm a Divine. In fact, I'm glad he
knows. Maybe now he'll leave you alone.” He opened his door and
rested his foot on the ground outside. “And,” he
continued sharply, “he
did
do something that validated
my anger, he broke the sign and it cut you. And then to top it off,
he touched your arm.” The door shut forcefully behind him as he
got out of the car. My eyes followed his every move through the
windshield as he came around to my side and opened mine. “
And
,”
he finished as I stepped out, “it's not okay for him to touch
you.”

Okay, okay,”
I agreed. I moved carefully out of the way for him to slam my door
and was surprised when he shut it softly. “I think you may be
right, Jonah. He probably
did
cause the sign to explode. And
it wasn't right for him to touch me. But, he
is
my boss and I
need my job, so I would appreciate it if you could stay a little more
calm when we're around him.”

That won't be a
problem; I'm not allowed on the property anymore.”

I grabbed his hands and
turned the tables on him, this time being the one to pull him into my
body. “Well, I guess I'll have to bring you lunch every day at
the shop, then.”

The sexy smile on his
face melted me as he took the control back, pulling me harder against
him. “Oh, Fox will just hate that, wont he?”

I hope so,
Strong Jonah.”

He shook his head and
laughed before leaning forward and placing a perfectly timed kiss
onto my lips. I quivered inside, desperate for more of him. But, in
his usual fashion, he pulled back and gave me a smile, ending the
union of our lips.

You ready to go
inside?” he asked softly.

No, I want to kiss
you some more, but I know that's not going to happen.

I smiled and nodded to
his question, letting go of the desires that flooded my head. “Yeah,
I'm still really thirsty. I just want to sit down and relax.”
