Demon Warriors 1: Hondo (15 page)

There he went again with that lethal playfulness. Hondo didn’t want any part of this. “Later.”

“You just gonna leave us?” the brothers called out to Hondo as he disappeared.

“Hell yes,” he murmured as he walked into Kane’s apartment.

Hondo knew he wasn’t going to get anything else out of the shifter considering he was dead now. Hondo walked out of the bedroom closet and walked into the living room.

Kane was still sitting on the edge of the couch, watching over Snooke. Man, did the demon have it bad. His eyes were intent as he stared at the sleeping man.

“It was all a set up,” he said quietly as he took a seat in one of the chairs.

“How? Why would anyone set Snooke up?” Hondo shook his head and then realized Kane wasn’t looking at him. “I don’t know. But the shifter had a large amount of blood loss.

It wasn’t a vampire. We checked. Did you notice blood on the ground?”

Kane shook his head. “I wasn’t paying attention.” Hondo knew Kane’s only focus was the slim man on his couch covered in bruises. Phoenyx couldn’t help with this. Snooke would have to heal on his own from the bruises. “I also forgot to tell you that I found that reporter. He was hiding at Cheveyo’s. He’s running from someone called Marino Malone. The name ring a bell to you?” Kane shook his head, finally looking up from Snooke. “That name isn’t familiar. Didn’t the reporter, Sexton, tell you what was going on?”

Hondo slouched down. Things were getting extremely strange around here. “No. He got tight-lipped when I asked him.”

“So what do we know so far?”

Hondo thought about it for a moment. “One.” He ticked off on his fingers. “The crystal is missing. We need to make that our top priority of finding out who stole it. Two, why were Falcon and Leam arguing outside of the bank? Three.” Hondo nodded toward the sleeping man.

“Who was the guy chasing Chris and Snooke, and why? Four, why is the reporter in hiding? Five, who killed the shifter and set up the scene? And lastly, who the hell is that elf, and why does he keep popping up to warn Chris about something he says he can’t tell us about?”

“And don’t forget about Leam chasing Chris. Why has he targeted him and not us?” Kane added.

Hondo shook his head. “I’m not sure, maybe because Chris would be easier to take his vengeance out on than us.”

“But that doesn’t explain what he’s doing with Falcon.” Kane slid to the floor and pulled his legs up, both demons lost in thought.

“Whatever is going on, I have a feeling we’ve only uncovered the surface. My gut is telling me it goes a lot deeper than any one of us realizes.” Hondo pointed to Snooke. “And I think he is the key to it all.”

Kane looked over his shoulder at Snooke. “But he’s not talking.” His voice was filled with a tenderness Hondo had never heard Kane use before.

Whatever Snooke was hiding, Hondo had a feeling Kane would protect the demon with his life.

“We need answers.” Hondo stated the obvious. “I need you to get them from him.”

Kane looked from Snooke to Hondo, his brows pulled together as his head tilted to the side. “You want me to fuck him to get him to talk?”

“Whatever it takes.”

* * * *

Snooke stood in the back of Malcor’s Melting Pot running his fingers over the bruises on his face.

“I see you got your ass kicked.”

Snooke shrugged. “It won’t be the last time.”

“What happened?” Marino asked.

Snooke let out a heavy sigh, looking from Marino to the men that surrounded him at the table. “It doesn’t matter what happened. The only thing you need to know is that I’m in now. I have their trust.” Marino sat back and studied Snooke and then let out a menacing laugh. “Now for phase two.” He sat back and laughed as he waved a waiter over for another cocktail.
