Debutante (18 page)

‘Remember when I asked you if I could try and track down some of the porn stars that disappeared early in their careers?'

‘Yes,' replied Em.

Richard poured a glass of sangria and handed it to Bobby. ‘Well, I found one – The Rose of Brazil. We're supposed to meet tomorrow, at The Muggery.'

Luke slid his arm around Emily. She leaned against him with a sigh so deep it was practically a shudder. He was her safety net. Her shelter. Her love. She saw the scratches on his other arm. Any lingering pity for Bobby vanished.

‘You said you were coming home at Christmas,' she said to Bobby. ‘Yet here you are at the end of August. What's up? A job offer?'

‘I don't think so,' repeated Bobby. She began to shiver. ‘I think I am jet-lagging.'

‘Hmm. It would explain a lot. Like why Daddy hated the film business.'

Jillian produced another terry wrap. She held it open for Bobby.

‘The Rose of Brazil has a tattoo of a rose on her hip,' said Richard.

‘You know I have no tattoo,' said Bobby. ‘You have seen me naked many times.'

‘Not completely naked,' replied Emily. ‘Take your dress off, Bobby. Put on that nice terry robe. Don't be afraid.'

‘Fine.' Bobby lifted her shift by the hem up and over her head. She threw the wet garment aside. As usual, she was braless, wearing only bikini panties.

‘Oooh, that's a bingo,' cooed Richard.

‘Thank you, Mr
Inglourious Basterd
,' Bobby said.

Richard swooned.

Bobby tugged her panties down and off. A tiny rose tattoo adorned the inside of her left hip.

‘Happy?' she asked her stepdaughter.

‘Yes,' Emily replied.

‘We have our cougar!' crowed Richard.

‘Praise be to the Gods of Film!' shouted Paul.

NAIL Productions Limited broke into wild applause. Wolf whistles pierced the air.

‘Daniel,' said Bobby, rolling her eyes upward one last time. ‘I. Tried.' She donned her robe, sat down at the patio table and sipped her drink. ‘So, we shall be a porn star family?'

Emily sat beside her. ‘For a while. We'll see what happens. As long as we're a family.'

A little smile crossed Bobby's lips. ‘OK. But no funny business for you and me together. Understand?'

‘Yes, Mommy,' said Emily. It made her laugh to see the pleasure Bobby took from this small triumph.

‘Luke,' said Bobby. ‘Sit. I think I will not kill you after all. Perhaps you will be part of my family soon?'

Luke sat beside Emily. ‘Yep,' he said.

Someone slid a disc into a boombox. The Zouk-Lambada music inspired Kara and Gary to get up and dance. Jillian and Marion produced chips and dip from the kitchen. Eric fired up the grill. It looked like NAIL was having a real pool party. The
Pool Party
shoot would have to wait.

Emily saw Eric and Bobby lock eyes for a moment, which surprised her. Still, Bobby had been alone for a long time. As long as Emily had Luke, she was happy. If she and Marion had the occasional play date, well, Marion and Luke probably would, too. And then there was Jillian. She sighed with contentment.

‘Lukey,' she whispered, ‘were you really going to spank me with that belt?'

‘Nope,' he whispered back. ‘I'm not going to spank you at all. At least, not until you ask me to.'

She shivered, although she was anything but cold.

Luke cupped her cheek and pressed his lips to hers. The kiss told her everything she needed to know. At least, almost everything.

When the kiss ended, she said, ‘Say those three little words, please.'

‘I'll do anything for you, Emily. You know that, right?'

‘Yes.'

‘Lights,' he whispered in her ear.

She wriggled with delight.

‘Camera,' Luke continued.

‘Mm. More,' Emily pleaded.

‘Action!'
