Crossing Values (15 page)

Peter sat on the couch with Amber curled up beside him, both watching the fire. Frank sat in one chair gently snoring while Faye sat in the other looking out the windows.

“What a great end to the year,” said Faye.

“I agree,” said Peter.

“I can’t believe how my life has changed,” said Amber.

“You still have a lot to tell me, Ray,” said Peter.

She looked at him as he continued.

“Like how do I find this dog that terrorized you?”

She laughed.

What a beautiful sound, he thought.

“Oh, Peter,” said Faye as she giggled.

“I do have a question,” said Amber.

“What’s that?” said Peter.

“Not for you, Pete,” sad Amber. She looked at Faye. “I’m not sure what to call you. Calling you by your first name just doesn’t seem right. You’ve been such a . . . well, you’ve been like a mother to me. I’m wondering if I could just call you . . . Momma.”

Peter watched as Amber left his mother speechless. She looked at Amber with tears in her eyes.

“Oh, my dear one,” said Faye. “I would be honored.” She reached out her hand to Amber, who grabbed it and held tight for a moment.

“Well, with that question answered,” Amber said as she looked at Peter, “I guess the only question left is how fast can this family put together a wedding?”

Chapter 25

RYAN PULLED UP TO THE
firehouse and got out. He walked to his bunk for the next twenty-four hours and threw his stuff into the locker.

“Griffin!”

“Yeah,” said Ryan.

“You got a letter.”

The fire chief walked up and handed him the envelope.

“Thanks.” Ryan looked at the front and recognized his mother’s writing. He tore it open to read her newest message.

“Good news?” Ryan’s partner for the shift tossed his bag on the bed next to Ryan.

“My sister’s getting married in three weeks.”

Coming Soon! Ryan’s Crossing
