Claiming the Highlander (27 page)

She pulled away. “I love you too.” She placed kisses all over his face. His eyes, his nose, his cheeks and returned to his mouth.

“I love you.”

“You are a stubborn man. If you had listened to me, you would have saved yourself so much trouble.”

“Aye, wife, but you still love me?”

She cupped his face and stared into his eyes. “I have loved you since the day we married, and I love you still.”

“For a thousand lifetimes?” His words trembled as if he needed to know the answer.

“Until time ends.”

She felt his relieved breath rush against her face. “That is all I need.”

Caelen scooped Brenna into his arms and crossed the courtyard. He was happy to be home so he could have his wife to himself and they could begin their life together. He planted a kiss on her lips. The women wore dreamy smiles and men donned expressions of triumph.

“I can walk.” Brenna twisted a lock of his hair around her finger.

He pulled his head away to get her to stop, but she twisted another lock around her forefinger. “You fell off the horse after you had dismounted.”

“The horse pushed me.”

“The horse has a name, and you fell and I had to pick you up.” He climbed the castle stairs without a change in his breath. He pulled open the iron-banded door as if it were a linen.

“You picked me up before I could get up.” She leaned back in his arms to get a better look at him. “Perhaps that wasn’t the only reason. I think you plan to ravish me.”

“Aye, that I plan to do.”

“My lord,” Keir said. “There is a messenger fae ye.”

Caelen turned from the stairs and headed toward the man hovering at the opposite end of the hall.

“You should let me down.”

“My lord,” he whipped out the message.

Caelen set her down and took it from him. “It’s from your father. He has been appointed sheriff. Perhaps, you should handle all the troubles.”

“I think you are right, husband.”

He gave her a sharp look of disagreement. “Nay.” He softened the rebuke with a kiss.

“Keir, you must get use to his new habit. He kisses me a great deal.”

“Aye, my lady. Ye dinna seem to mind.”

“That I do not. I am tired husband, perhaps you can deal with that later.”

Caelen slapped the missive against Keir’s chest and led his wife to the chamber. He planned to love his wife until both fell asleep from exhaustion and satisfaction.

He did exactly that.

When he plopped down on his back, he drew his wife close and breathed in the scent of their lovemaking. “I love you.” His eyes drifted close. He fell asleep with a smile on his face.

“Rest, husband. I’m off to the kitchen. I want a berry tart.”
